Why? Roy hit him and really hurt him that's true. But what happened next? Joe got up and proceeded to beat his ass, When have you EVER seen Roy Jones outboxed and totally outclassed like that?

Tarver knocked him out from one huge punch (which joe doesn't have) but he never came close to putting a beating like that on him. Johnson overpowered him and beat him up as well but Jones was at his lowest ever point there. And without the natural power Johnson has he wouldn't have outboxed Jones like that.

It made me think Calzaghe might actually beat Jones in his prime. See Calzaghe just does not know how to lose, he has no self doubt at all. When he got hiy he was defiant, dropping his hands and taunting Jones.

That ain't the mark of a man who would crumble against any fighter.

I reckon Calzaghe could have broken Jones will at any time in his career.

COULD being the operative word, it would be one hell of a matchup and Jones would have just as much chance to beat Joe.

But please stop thinking it would be a walkover for Roy becuase Calzaghe is like no other fighter since Marciano imo.

Having just watched the whole fight through again a couple of times, I have a couple of thoughts.
The first 3 rounds were terrific. Excellent skill from both fighters, and a palpable sense of danger for both. It was evens up to the end of round 2, but RJJ looked to have the most potent weapon in a well timed right. As it seemded watching live though, round three was the key round. Calzaghe turned it on. Watch it again...masterful stuff. RJJ had no idea what was happening to him. Far from it being the disgrace that has been mooted in another thread, it was boxing out of the top drawer. Exhilerating, skilfull and unpredictable. There's a bloody good reason Jones went into defensive peek-a-boo mode: he didn't like being hit repeatedly about the head. When Calzaghe leaned in to lear at him, he did it so close, that RJJ would not have had the time or the range to tag him without leaving himself open. It was very, very clever stuff: tactically astute, and psychologically damaging. It was the pupil surpassing the master.
I'm not sure whether some of the people on here that suggested RJJ should have just hit clobbered Calzaghe's open chin have been in a boxing ring. If they had, they might know that there was a simple answer. RJJ couldn't just tag him, and more damagingly, he knew he couldn't.
Fight won, there and then.
I think it does RJJ a great disservice to suggest that he didn't try. He clearly tried very hard, but, as he put it himself to his corner he couldn't "get him". He's the 46th fighter to come up against that conundrum in a pro ring. There's no disgrace in that at all.
Rounds 8 to 12 were very hard to watch second time around. Watching live, there was always the chance that RJJ would catch Joe with a sucker punch....in fact he did. Howver, in the knowledge that his bravery was futile, it was tough to see a ring great being so comprehensively dismantled.
He seemed to be talking sense in the post-fight interview, so I hope he (RJJ) eshews the inevitable cash offers to fight Hopkins again, and goes the way of Ray Leonard...keeping a handsome face, and an un-scrambled mind.

By the time he beat Dawson there would be somebody else for him to beat.

I still don't see how he doesn't get much credit for beating Hopkins tho.

I really enjoyed the fight and the nerves were there too. Certainly edge of your seat stuff in the 1st few rounds.
Calzaghe went down hard in the 1st and I honestly thought that was the end of him. Replays showed it was a combiantion of a punch and a forearm (accidental). Either way Joe had to drag himself up.

I thought Roy started the showboating and then Calzaghe just outdid him. No harm in it as they both have been known to do it.
Some superb heavy shots in the fight by Roy while Joe landed alot more and landed nice shots to the body.

The fight for Joe was already in the bag for Joe by the time of the cut in the 7th which was horrendous. Full credit to Roy for not quiting or giving up even though he must have sensed he was a beaten fighter.
Joe fought a superb fight tactically and picked his punches well combining them with the flurries when needed.

Now Please retire Joe - I can't take anymore. (Roy should get out aswell after a great final last stand from a Legend)

What makes you think that Roy would beat Joe easy?

Apart from the difference in power, Joe had everything over Roy and years ago Joe would have fought a different fight having a little more respect for a fresher Jones, he wouldnt have let Roy have a few free shots and sway hands low right in Roys face.

I cant understand the fuss over Joe piiss taking with Roy as in Roys previous fight he did this to an outgunned Tito.

I think Roy was more piissed off because he knew what good shape he was in and Joe just completetly beat him up, moreso than anyne has done (minus a KO) Joe is a machine and if you take little breaks like Roy does hes gonna run you over.

I am a huge RJJ fan and always have been but even in his prime Joe would have been a very difficult fight for him.

I think so many people are upset about the showboating they are letting that cloud their judgment over what was pretty much a great performance by JC.Thats fair enough i can understand that but anyone who says JC is mediocre isn't really living in the real world and IMO it kinda smacks of bitterness/sour grapes a little bit.

Fair enough, but back to the point about mediocrity. You still think JC is mediocre as this is what you said in your post? "The mediocre beating up the elderly" or something. It is that i picked up on since JC is clearly not mediocre and anyone who says so is IMO not living in the real world and it is that reason that i thought it was sour grapes. IT clearly wasn't.

EDIT: Rather than turn this into a silly debate about what you said i understand the real point you were trying to make was that you thought this is a nothing fight, it turned out as expected and that it could have been an interesting fight in the past but now its not.

I totally agree this wasn't a championship fight at all, it felt more like a circus to me. One guy clowning/dancing every 30 seconds, and the other not willing to commit or fight, or take advantage's of clear openings Joe Calzaghe was giving him. There was no desire/heart/ ETC at all in this fight.

I appreciate the sweet sciene thats why some of my favorite fighters, are fighters like Pernell Whitaker, Floyd Mayweather Jr, but this wasn't the sweet sciene at all this was total bollocks IMO.

I felt cheated that i had all my friends over and my girl, and i had to stay up all that long. To watch that embarrassment, even my friends went home before the fight finished.

This is what happens when you leave the promoting to yourselves. I thought they showed too much respect and it was more like a sparring session at times. It wasn't a good fight but a good occasion.

He was clearly aiming shots at that cut from round 8 onwards and all that show boating didn't look like too much respect to me

Joe has everything to gain by fighting chad dawson. dawson is the final piece of the jigsaw puzzle. Without dawson there is no cherry on top of the cake. Calzaghe will be derided as a grampa beater unless he fights dawson.

Didnt get going till 5ish in the morning and the house party i was at watching the fight had been drinking since 10pm!!!

I barely remember much of the fight apart from the obvious calzaghe beat down he gave to jones but having seen it again "sober" im delighted and proud of joes performance last night.

The way he was able to manouvere Jones around the ring and pick him off at will at 37 years old is quite incredible and im quite sure joe had another 12rounds in him come the end of the fight.

1st of all i want to say congratulations to calzaghe for winning the fight against my boxing idol roy jones jnr. Roy jones is past his prime as we all saw yesterday but i still admire him for actually giving a go and trying his best.
There is no doubt that calzaghe is a fantastic boxer and that he will be talked about by future boxing fans for years to come but the only thing that upsets me is why is he only fighting roy jones and hopkins in 2008??
Jones called him out to step up from super middleweight to lightheavyweight to fight him back in 2002 but he declined.....hopkins called him up back in 1999 but he declined.......ao why all the sudden change of heart??
well jones in 2002 was 33 and still in his prime while in 1999 hopkins was 33(also in his prime).....it just upsets me that calzaghe is taking this amazing credit for beating them while they are not in their prime.....i mean hopkins 42yrs old and jones 39yrs old....what do people expect?
I just hope that the next few boxing generation of fans know their facts about these fights rathar than just the fact that calzaghe beat them. Like calzaghe said last night....."this year i have beaten 2boxing legends" but for me.....if he had beat them while they were not legends would be more of a achievement.....would calazhe beat jones or hopkins in 1999 or 2002 respectivetly.......i think we all know the answer.....as calzaghe knew back when he declined the fights!!;)
