Re: who you rekon is the best HBO commentator??
I liked RJJ and he made ALOT of good points when he was commentating(watch Tito Mayorga,he nailed nearly EVERY point in that fight!) and he was lively. I like Steward because he knows alot about the sport but I don't like how after 20 seconds of a fight, when NOTHING has happened, and he'll say so and so has the upper hand now!! Does he have like a crystal ball or something?! He's interesting though so I like him.
I'm sorry but I DO NOT rate Max Kellerman. He's passionate etc but he makes far far too many mistakes and as a commentator,I understand when one of his faves fights,he'll be ahppy but I have NEVER seen someone over rate a fighter(Paul Williams) so much,he makes out like he's the second coming(he was just ANNOYING during the Mathysse fight) and he makes too many mistakes. I can't remember which fight it was but at least 3 times,he said Manny Pac koed MAB in 5 rounds...
Al Bernstein is the man for me,at Showtime and his partner too. They click and Bernstein's analysis at times is just AWESOME! hAVING ONLY BEEN A FAN OF BOXING FOR LIKE 2 YEARS,I have learnt alot from him,he has an eye for detail and usually makes astute points which come to fruition during the duration of the bout.
Lennox Lewis.....booooooooooooooooooooooooooooring,monoto nous!

I used to really REALLY like Merchant...but he's gone waaaaaaaaaaaay offa the deep end now.
Lamps is alright...but he seems a bit full of himself. Always loved Lederman & Lewis is starting to grow on me.
I'll stick with Max though. Oddly enough...I always thought that he was too big for ESPN2 & that he should move over to HBO.
He's just so damned enthusiastic over his job.
I can't Stand Kellerman ! always acting like his shit don't stink. and always looking at everyone else like they know nothing. also very confrontational... just a prick IMO .. happy new years Wacko !
Re: who you rekon is the best HBO commentator??
Jim Lamply is hand down the best commentator in boxing,, Lamply has a great professional voice, knowledgeable about the fighters on the card. In addition Jim has a great ability to conduct the flow of the conversations, and help out the other commentators when they start fumbling . He is also great person ! ;)

I agree 100% Brian Kenny is top shelf ! O0

rekon?
I really like Russ Anber.
Russ Anber is the undisputed authoritative voice of boxing in Canada. The energetic and entertaining boxing guru is the host of TSN's weekly 30-minute boxing show IN THIS CORNER With Russ Anber and ESPN Classic's HBO Boxing Classics and Classic Night at the Fights.
Anber has been working with TSN since 1996 and has covered every major boxing event, including the Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games, World Championship Boxing, and the Canadian National Senior Championships. In 2004, Anber joined TSN on a regular basis after the Olympic Games in Athens.
The President of Rival Technical Boxing Gear, Anber is a veteran boxing trainer who has trained four Olympians, one World Champion, two Commonwealth Games gold medallists, as well as numerous national champions. He first made his mark as an amateur boxing coach at age 18, and today he continues to coach championship-calibre boxers at his Ring 83 Boxing Club in Montreal.
Anber became the first coach to produce a medal for Canada at the World Boxing Championships in Reno when boxer Howard Grant won silver in 1986. In 1996, Anber sent three athletes to the Olympic Summer Games in Atlanta and was named Montreal Coach of the Year (for all sports). In 1997, Anber reached the pinnacle of his coaching career when he guided Otis Grant to the WBO World Middleweight title.
Anber is in his third term as President of Boxing Quebec and is a member of Boxing Canada's Board of Directors.
Anber, a Montreal native, is a self-proclaimed 'Snooker Junkie' and '9-Ball enthusiast' and hopes to one day carry his broadcasting career over to the green baize.

I also enclosed a pic of what he did to klitschko when he got mouthy with Russ Anber during an interview.
Re: who you rekon is the best HBO commentator??
I think it's hard to compare commentators, because IMO there are three different types in boxing: 1) blow by blow commentary, 2) color commentary and, 3) expert commentary.
I like Jim Lampley's CC, but to me he gets overbearing with his BBB. Especially at first, he calls every single punch, and of course, I'll find myself disagreeing with some of what he sees. As a matter of fact, I'm hard pressed to think of a BBBC that I really like.
I think my fav EC is RJJ. He's very articulate and insightful. I also like Stewart, he knows the game.
I can't help but like Larry Merchant, he's just good entertainment!
Seems we're talking about non HBO commentators as well. I just want to say I actually think that Teddy Atlas is very knowledgeable, but he gets so annoying when he repeats the same thing over and over. Also, whenever he asks a guest a question about fight strategy, he poses it in a way that tries to lead them to answer in support of his opinion.
I remember watching a classic fight from the 40s. The commentator was very unobtrusive. The fight was pretty one sided, but the commentator avoided saying who he thought was winning.

Re: who you rekon is the best HBO commentator??
Lampley is so hit or miss. He is a ball-washer for the fighter's HBO wants him to hype-up, but I has a great voice an he makes some great insightfull comments. Merchant is done. Done. Kellerman good, but he's not great on camera and his delivery is choppy. Lewis is getting better, but he's still not good. Roy Jones is pretty damn good. When he isn't busy promoting himself or being egotistical, he's on point.
As someone mentioned, Showtime has the best. Bernstein is the man.

I think Bernstein does a great job. From an analytical standpoint, a Lampley-Bernstein group would be great. I'd miss Merchant though.
The thing that drives me nuts about Showtime is that they don't show any punch stats at all. That drives me crazy. Does anyone know why they don't do this?
I mean, I know that punch stats aren't the be-all and end-all when it comes to scoring fights, but it's still nice info to have.
Re: who you rekon is the best HBO commentator??
jones jr , Lederman and Emanuel Steward those are my favs, Lampley is so full of him lately and merchant well his hating everybody that doesn't win by KO I do hate on Kellerman and the others bore the shit out of me.
Re: who you rekon is the best HBO commentator??
Larry Merchant(Not scared to ask dum shat) Jim Lampley(Just very informative) Wacko( a very drunken but good assessment of a fight)
