Re: AM I THE ONLY ONE WHO THINKS CALZAGHE IS OVERATED AND CRAP
There's a limited point of view concerning Joe Calzagh among his detractors.
Honestly...it's a bit ridiculous to hear someone say that he's both overratted & crap.
Joe's underratted & he sure as shit aint crap. Joe's handed some hellacious beatings to some skilled fighters & his amateur record speaks bounds regarding his abilities as well as his stint as a pro.
To say that man is crap...well that borders on stupidity.
If you don't like his style...that's one thing...but either you aren't taking the wins into effect or your just projecting hate.
The man is good...he deserves respect. The men that he beat, soundly I might add, didn't just lie down in the ring...he put them down. Period. Also...a lot of the people that rip into Joe about his opponents needed to see the fights. Several of Joe's opponents equal or surpass some of Jones & Hopkins opponents. Just because you don't know them doesn't make them shit.
I realize that most boxing fans have "what have you done for me lately" syndrome...but you have to pay attention to a man's overall record & the way that he has won.
For a pitty pat fighter...he's knocked out a hell of a lot of men.
Do your research...watch the matches before you blast him.

CC#729 Those were my exact thoughts
Re: AM I THE ONLY ONE WHO THINKS CALZAGHE IS OVERATED AND CRAP
I don't think Calzaghe is overrated or crap. Calzaghe is tremendously skilled and judging by the beating he is taking on this board and in the boxing media he is underrated if anything. I simply think that either he or Warren (most likely Warren), for whatever reason, don't seem to want him in the ring with other great fighters. They talk a good game, but when it comes time to put pen to paper, there's always some excuse as to why the fight cannot be made. I think that Calzaghe would probably beat Kessler, no matter where the fight takes place, but for a myriad of supposedly rational reasons the fight has not, and probably will not, take place.
Re: AM I THE ONLY ONE WHO THINKS CALZAGHE IS OVERATED AND CRAP
i don't like calzaghe but i do think he is a skilled fighter.
Re: AM I THE ONLY ONE WHO THINKS CALZAGHE IS OVERATED AND CRAP
He's not crap. That definitely goes way too far.
But I do think he's overrated, and I really don't understand the comments here that "no, actually he's under-rated. He's #8 in the Ring Magazine's P4P list. He's even higher on the Saddo list. How is he possibly underrated? Do you people actually think he's better than PBF, Pac or Winky, or that he deserves their spots?
I personally had him at around #10 after the Lacy fight, but his stock is rapidly falling--not just because of who his competition has been, but because of how he's looked against it (yes, that includes against Manfredo, where I thought he was actually pretty inaccurate, through only arm-punches, and won on pure volume).
Re: AM I THE ONLY ONE WHO THINKS CALZAGHE IS OVERATED AND CRAP
Overrated? I'm not sure. Crap? Absolutely not. I think it's crazy to call anyone who's good enough to become a professional fighter "crap." Besides, how does an undefeated fighter with over 40 fights warrant the description "crap"?
Two observations, though:
One, as most everyone else has said, he desperately needs to up the quality of his opposition....... whatever it takes. If he's got to leave the U.K. to fight a Taylor or a Hopkins, DO IT. If he has to dump his blood-sucking promoter and make his own fights, DO IT. If he has to take less money than he would like to fight Kessler, DO IT. Whatever it takes. He needs to realize that the perception that he ducks good opposition is growing by the day.
Two, I was admittedly surprised about how "pitty-pat" his punches looked during his last flurry on Manfredo. When they showed the repeat in slow motion, I was amazed to see how some of those punches were thrown in an awkward motion (like when you pound your fist on a table) to the back of the head (not that they did any harm). Now, I know some fighters tend to lose form when they're in the middle of a flurry, but that looked pretty weird. I mean.... is that common? Am I making a big deal out of nothing?

:coolclick: Good point. Dead on the money...40+ men don't just walk into the ring & beat themselves.

Agreed again. Thing is...he'll never drop Warren...it's too late in the game & Frank owns part of Joe's soul basically.
To save face Joe should fight Kessler...but the same was said of him fighting Lacy...so if he hammers Kess the fwock out...will he gain respect?
You & I both know that he won't. Kessler will then be known as just another crap Euro paper champ or some horse shit like that & then Joe will either have to beat Taylor, Hopkins, Wright, or some other worthy fighter.
It's all bullshit in the end. No matter what Joe does...he can't win public appeal.

Joe's awkward. No doubt. When he flurries like that...yeah...he's often all over the place...but the thing is...& you'll see it in his past bouts...he is effective & he does have power enough to stop his opponent.
I wouldn't say your'e making a big deal out of it...just an assestment or opinion.
Nothing wrong there.

CC back, wack. And yeah, Calzaghe probably doesn't have as many options as we'd all like him to have. But the fact remains, that the public's perception, fickle as it may be sometimes, is still a major influence in a boxer's career and should be treated "with tender loving care." Joe may very well beat Kessler, only to have people diss Kessler as a no good bum. But he's got no choice. He's got to stop fighting the Manfredos and go for the cream of the division........ PRONTO.
Re: AM I THE ONLY ONE WHO THINKS CALZAGHE IS OVERATED AND CRAP
He's obviously not crap....but his last 2 years or so are starting to push the "crap" limits...Warren needs sh*tcanned...he is destroying everything Calzaghe has built in his career....
