Re: WTF Oscar has a High School named after him???
Out of curiosity I clicked on the link posted of ODLH....
I like how all of you who drank 'hatorade' today don't mention the numbers mentioned in the story..... ::**
"While LAUSD graduates less than 45% and sends less than 20% to four-year colleges. De La Hoya who helped build the school, is actively involved with the students and faculty -- This year 98% of the seniors are graduating. 78% will be going on to four year universities."

Quartey has a statue of himself outside the hospital front entrance. Hell he paid for it, so why not? If Oscar wants to name the school after himself, than so be it.

I don't want to sound negative here as you guys know that's just not me ( ::**) but imo most of these guys owe something back to their communites anyways.
All this Oscar nut hugging....man his fans put him where he was. He's been blessed with the most loyal and devoted following who have supported him to the extent that he is the highest paid boxer ever outside the heavyweight division.
Personally I'd be pissed as hell if he wasn't giving something back.
So he gave $1,000,000 to open a hospital. Thats about £500,000. No offense but big F****** deal.
He made over $50,000,000 for his fight with Floyd alone. Despite Floyd being the boxing star, undefeated and p4p number 1 in the sport, Oscar's devoted fan following enabled him to get a $25,000,000 purse for the fight compared to Floyd's $10,000 AND he got 70% of the PPV! Factor in merchandising, sponsership and endorsments and he made enough money to buy some of these poorer nations outright.
$500,000, that's a day out to Oscar.

I would reply to you cause belive you me, your judging thise by the money $ no one here was mentioning money they mentioned the things he built/funded with the money.
If your putting a price on funding a school for the future of kids to give them a better education and a better chance to succed in their life and make something of themselves other then joining a gang or the military more oppourtunities then a regular Unified School District and a research center to try and find a cure for cancer and treat people with cancer then your completely missing the point here. Also I take it you have NO idea the what the difference is between a Unified School and the School the ODLH build/help create. There is no use discussing the matter with you.
Anyway continue on as you were rambling all your nonsense of which you have the slighest clue what it's really about. :)

hehe sorry to knock your saviour like that I know it's probably blashpemy to your ears.
I'm just sick of Oscar getting so much love from people. He can't just be an active charity worker, he has to do more than anybody else in the sport. He can't just be a popular fighter, he has to be the most popular fighter in the whole sport.
He can't just be a boxer he has to be a promoter, and a singer, and all around perfect man.
Even his nickname just sums up the man, the Golden Boy, the anointed one, mister perfection.
And the fact that he obviously basks in that admiration just irks me. He builds schools and names them after himself, and then those schoold do better than all the others, arrgh it's just so fucking sickening to me
Re: WTF Oscar has a High School named after him???
I heard that every morning the kids chant to a portrait of Oscar instead of the flag for the pledge of allegiance:
I pledge allegiance to Oscar De La Hoya and to the man for which it stands, one Nation, under Oscar De La Hoya, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.
DLH doesnt have to give back, but he does. If I had that much money I would have a picture of my face branded on as many woman as possible and keep them on diamond encrusted leashes.
Anyways, Bilbo, you are just a cynical ole' fwock ;)
Maybe you can name that thing growing out of your ass oscar? ;D

In reality Oscar don't owe his community a god damn thing. He grew up poor and needed a way out. So he got in a ring and decided to fight his way out. Ain't nobody got in the ring with him. Nobody took any punches with him. Aside from his family nobody bought him any boxing gear or paid his travel costs. So fuck all that bullshit talk that Oscar owe somebody something. He don't owe nobody nothing. The fact that he actually gives something should be appreciated.
Re: WTF Oscar has a High School named after him???
I heard this picture is on the wall above the entrance to the school.

I 100% agree with you, he is doing this off his own back and HE is the one who made his cash. Its not like hes a second generation rich kid who had inheritance. There are much richer people who do fuck all to help others in this world.

athletes like Evander Holyfield and Michael Jordan who are just as rich as Oscar are known for their penny-pinching attitude when it comes to doing charity work. Someone like Jordan made more money of his image and being a role model for many kids with endorsements than actually playing ball but no one ever knocks on him for not doing anything for the community while a bulk of Oscar's fortune was made in the squared circle. Oscar doesn't owe anyone a damn thing and therefore he should be appreciated for his efforts such as building this school
Re: WTF Oscar has a High School named after him???
That's a small high school!
