A former champion boxer shot in the head after asking three men to stop smoking is now brain dead and will have his life support machine switched off on Friday, his solicitor said on Thursday.
James Oyebola, 47, was shot at close range in a London nightclub in the early hours of Monday morning.
His solicitor, Scott Ewing, said he was being kept alive today so family members could pay their last respects.
But just before midday Friday consultants will legally declare him dead and switch off his life support machine, he added.
The 6ft 9ins former British heavyweight champion was shot in the head and leg in
a covered courtyard area at the rear of Chateau 6 in Fulham Road, west London.
Four shots were fired but no weapon has been found.
Mr Oyebola, known as Big Bad during his fighting career, arrived at Chateau 6 at about 11pm on Sunday for a drink with the owner after finishing work at a nearby bar.
He was shot shortly before 1am after intervening to help staff who had asked three men to stub out their cigarettes.
It was 23 days after smoking was banned in pubs, clubs and restaurants in England. His attackers, described as black and aged between 19 and 25, fled the club on foot - apparently in separate directions.
Mr Oyebola, born in Nigeria, won 18 of his 23 fights, and was a bronze medallist at the 1986 Commonwealth Games. After winning the WBC international heavyweight title in 1993, he retired in 1996.
RIP champ

Yeah, I always thought I would visit London if I ever got the courage to travel. I am starting to reconsider.
Sorry, James. :(

It's not just London. A guy here in Boston was beaten to death recently over a spilled drink. About a year and a half ago I was helping my daughter move into a new apartment in Manhattan and a guy threatened to shoot me over a parking space. Friggin lunatics are everywhere. One really needs to be careful when dealing with other people.

So true, Canvas.
I am fully capable of defending myself but only when there is no out. I never test anyone because you never know how they will react. Besides the weak are the greater threats because they need a weapon to help them claim victory.

The blame for his death lies with the British government who imposed a no smoking ban in pubs and clubs. The government in the UK are like a bunch of fucking nazis and they are taking peoples rights away one by one. i dont smoke but i think people should be allowed to do whatever they want after all its there own body. if people where still allowed to smoke in pubs and clubs James Oyebola would still be alive.

While I agree with you that the British government are like nazi's slowly taking away our rights (driving tolls/taxes, smoking etc) it is still no justification to what these pricks have done. If it wasn't over cigarettes it would have been over someone accidently stepping on their shoes or somebody brushing past them in a club to get by. These cowards are unhappy insecure little shits on the inside.

CC#2 Exactly....Guys like the ones who did this cowardly act would have found a different reason to act a fool....A bunch of punks with a gun feeling like the are powerful as God just itching for a reason to try out their theory.....Goverment had nothing to do with anything,,,,,How culd that even be used as a reason.....
In America the evening of the Superbowl there are more cases of domestic violence reported on that one night then any other day of the year...So it can be blamed on the NFL that a bunch of guys go around busting up their wives?.....
Re: James Oyebola 'Brain Dead'... Some appreciation please!
Word is that these 3 guys who did this will probably be dead before the police catch them

What about the people who dont smoke that want to go out and have a good time ??? Should they be held hostage to someones dirty habit and sacrifice their long term health in favor of having a good time ???
What about the employees that work at these establishments? should they risk there long term health trying to put food on their tables and support their families.
And to blame the law for James death is just fukin stupid >:mad you mean to tell me that the scumbag who pulled the trigger, valued a vile cancer stick over anothers human life and thats the governments fault ??? You my friend are a complete jackass have a :sadclick: junior. Lord knows your ignorant azz deserves it ::**
