Re: Mosley Should Beat Cotto
Everyone thought that Zab would be the end of Cotto......Miguel has heart and he's too proud to back down once the brawl starts and I think Shane is in for one tough night.
Shane MIGHT win but he'll have to earn it
Re: Mosley Should Beat Cotto
I'm excited about this fight now, im only moderately excited about a lot of the "big" fights comin up, but i really look forward to this one.
Re: Mosley Should Beat Cotto
Many people doubt Cotto, but he just keeps on pushin' & has a hell of a heart to keep him goin' and win in a fight! He will have trouble and IMO he will win this fight! (p.s.) a prime Mosley would of beat even Mayweather but this is no longer a prime Mosley!
Re: Mosley Should Beat Cotto
I pick Cotto to win by decision in a very competitive fight.
Mosley is a very good fighter, but I think he's overrated by many. I think in some ways that he's still living off of the great performance he had vs. Oscar in their first fight. That was 7 years ago... a lifetime ago in boxing terms.
Mosley has many more bad performances than good ones in the years since. He revived his career by KOing a completely shot Fernando Vargas. Mosley has never had a lot of punching power since moving up from lightweight.
And the biggest reason for Mosley's mediocre record this decade is because he is not a particularly smart fighter. He's a smart guy, but not a smart fighter. He was blessed with great speed and athleticism, yet he fights one-dimensionally. He stands flat-footed and throws power shots. If Mosley's style was based around movement and defense (like Mayweather), then I would pick him to beat Cotto. But Shane doesn't fight that way, he'll be flat-footed and trading power shots, which is exactly what he shouldn't do against the younger, stronger Cotto.

You,brother, are a fricking genius! That post echoes my feelings wholeheartedly and you're the only one to nail the points. I wasn't sure how to word it but you did it perfectly. I'm keeping this post as referece. I've always thought Shane made mistakes especially with his style and I don't think he can outbox Cotto in anyway, shape or form.
He's going to fight the way he has been fighting for a decade and that's try and use his handspeed to bedazzle Cotto. He'll have successes earlier on but once he feels Cotto's power and bodyshots, once he sees the relentlesness,he will lose imo. Great post bro,CC.
Re: Mosley Should Beat Cotto
Eventhough there's alegation/rumor spreading around that Mosley is/was on dope, my heart on this one still says Sugar Shane just because Ive seen so much of his fights throughout his career. His rapid punching style combined with his unique physique he has been a truly great fighter. However there's something about Cotto and current form that is suggesting to me hes gonna clean up here. I feel a bit for these two guys with everyone obsessing over Mayweather Hatton (a fight between two opponents of notably different calibre) this mega fight isent getting as much attention as it probably deserves because this is truly a case of the best fighting the best!

While i agree that Mosley is not the force he was when he was a lightweight...he is still a tremendous athlete who possesses great speed. You say Shane fights one-dimensionally...but in my opinion so does Cotto. I think Cotto is a very good and exciting fighter. But he has plenty of defensive flaws, a suspect chin, and does not have great speed on either his movement or punches. While i admire his heart and exciting style...i don't see him having the skill or speed to stop Shane. As for who is the stronger puncher...again...it's true Shane isn't the beast he was at a lightweight...but i don't think he is the weaker puncher in this match up. If anything i rate them about the same in the power department. The difference is that Shane is the much faster fighter. So when these two trade...i see Shane connecting at a higher rate and more accurately. If i had to bet on who's chin holding up...i'll put my money on Mosley. I think it will be an exciting fight...but unless Shane grows old in this one...I don't see him losing.

I agree.
But the point is... Shane was blessed with the type of speed and athleticism that would allow him to fight more of a pure boxing style, and he chooses not to do so. He doesn't make the most of his gifts with the way he fights. If he had developed a style based more around movement, he could have been a better fighter.
Cotto may be somewhat one-dimensional, but that one dimension is the one that gets the most out of skills.
Re: Mosley Should Beat Cotto
What are the odds on this fight anyhow just to ask who is the favorite to win the fight

CC, good post. I agree, unless Shane gets real old he wins by k.o. IMO. I love Cotto, but see him getting schooled. I wonder if Mosley is going to have some extra fire to him because of all this doping b.s. being said about him. He might really try to prove all these insinuators wrong and bring some real heat. Of course Cotto wants to prove something too. Going to be a barnstormer for sure.

Cotto is fav. ???
is easy money on Mosley i reckon ;)
so long as the ref stops Cottos punching in the balls when he is hurt or overwhelmed.
Re: Mosley Should Beat Cotto

I personally don't think SSM falls under the 'should beat' category....
When I read SSM should beat Cotto IMO your selling Cotto short here. It's like your not taking into consideration how much he has grown as a boxer. I remember when ROCKYMARSHMELLOW and I got into a debate here cause he was saying that Cotto didn't have room to grow that Cotto would loose soon and that he had no future... I forget who was it that backed Rockys theory and said that he also agreed that Cotto had no future.... Well I disagreed with them and told him Cotto was gonna grow and was gonna improve cause he had time and room to improve as he went thru the ranks. Here we are about 2 yrs. later and Cottos still going strong.
I have almost all of Cottos career except for a fight or two but let me tell you man this kids really improved massively. I mean look at the way he finished Quintana off with body shots. Look at the way he finished off Zab with straight right hands and a uppercut.
I think the Cotto vs. SSM fight will start off a little like the Zab fight where SSMs hand speed and skill will cause him problems... Cotto being in the mind set he normally is he'll adjust to it as the fight moves forward and begin to take SSM apart.
well said. though Mosley is one of my all-time favorite, I do not discount Cotto. cc on that.
Re: Mosley Should Beat Cotto
Now that I have read that Shane likes to use modern day chemical witchcraft, I hope they test his azz.
