He took out Hearns, Duran and had a very close run with Leonard in his prime in a 67 fight career. Don't get me wrong, P4P I believe that Mayweather is better, but Hagler has an amazing resume against probably better opposition.

If we are talking overall opposition, then its close with Mayweather having the edge.
Re: Why Do Some Of You Not Consider Floyd Mayweather Jr A Great ??
Very well put ICB, i was a Floyd non believer and have now seen the light, there is no way he is not a top ten all time great even if he retired now! If he beats Cotto and Williams next year or fights and beats DLH in a rematch he goes top 5 ATG and that will upset a lot of people.
I have stated before that the problem people have with Floyd is the non acceptence that he would beat our favorite fighters from the past, he already is beating our favorite fighters of the present. He is the complete package, he has power and his defensive skills are second to none that i have seen including Whitaker! We are all looking to see who can beat him, well who has the answers?
You couldn't get more varying styles than Judah,DLH and Hatton and they all failed. IMO Cotto won't do it either and will be eating Floyd's jab all night long in any match up, Williams has height advantage but that's about all, PBF will work him out by round 2 and win a UD. Unless he bites off more than he can chew and goes up to middlewight i think he will finish undefeated.
Re: Why Do Some Of You Not Consider Floyd Mayweather Jr A Great ??
Floyd is a great fighter and has excellent skills, he like roy jones has the problem of not having really had an oppononet in his lighter weight class, i appareantly am in the minority who thought delahoy beat him not by much but thought he simply did more in there. Does that mean floyds not a great fighter no.. he was moving in up in weight, the only thing that bothers me is when people say floyd won huge against oscar, that to me is preposterous ive seen the fight numerous times and that just didnt happen.
Re: Why Do Some Of You Not Consider Floyd Mayweather Jr A Great ??
Well i say that i have PBF at 23 or 24 i belive when i made the list which is fair i believe. I mean he is almost top SFW, He is under Duran, Whitaker, and Mosley but that is opinion. And the rest of the weight no but welter is still up for grabs depends on what he does. Thing is alot people think he is great simply because of his 0 but he is only 30 there are alot of greats that were undefeated then lost after they were 30. I think how PBF preforms now well have a major effect on him going up or him going down we will see how the world views him in the future.

No your the only one who thinks that on this forum, Oscar was missing with his flurries. You obvisously didn't pay attention when watching the fight. Because Mayweather out landed Oscar in overall punches by a landslide, and in power shots. Just watch some of those flurries in slow motion and see how many of them are effective. And see how many are landing.

Well sorry but it did happen, Mayweather won by at least 3 or 4 rounds comfortably.

Ellis earned early success as an amateur, winning the Australian Bantamweight Championship before turning professional in 1983. However boxing can be a fickle sport, and his meteoric rise up the ranks was equally rapid on the way down. Just five months later, Lester Ellis, after one successful title defence against Rod Sequenan, lost the world crown to another Victorian, Barry Michael. Ellis fought on for a number of years and won another world title of sorts by securing the WBF welterweight belt.
An aggressive, hard puncher, he was always an attractive drawcard in Australia.
He attempted suicide on 27 May 2006 by attempting to jump in front of several cars and a train. He is currently facing three counts of assault and one count of affray.

Sorry but how does this make him a multiple weight champion. ???
Since when has anyone counted the IBO and WBF (who ???) belts.
He's got one belt. If you give this guy the credit of being a four weight champ then Audley Harrison was also heavyweight champ of the world :-X
I think maybe less googling and more reading of what your googling is in order Ice ;)
Re: Why Do Some Of You Not Consider Floyd Mayweather Jr A Great ??
Floyd just came up at the wrong time.
The thing is, even though the 2000s has been an era of a lot of really good fighter, it has not been an era of many truelly great fighters. I would describe Floyd's qualitty of opposition as good at best and just above average at worst.
He was THE MAN at 130 and it is here were he had most of his significant victories. His biggest win here is most likely Corrales. Corrales, RIP, is good not great.
He was THE MAN at 135 by beating the current champion in Castillo x2. Again Castillo was good not great.
Up to this point Floyd is well on his way to greatness.
He moves to 140 and gets himself a title. He missed KT by a few years and had he come up 2-3 years earlier he would've face his first great fighter in KT.
He moves on to 147 at a time when 147 was at an extreemly low point in quality champions and he grabs himself another belt. I am hard pressed to call Judah and Baldomir as anything but mediocer champions. Good fighters but far from great. My mouth waters at the probable great fights that would've happend if PBF had come up in the 90s.
Finally he moves up to 154 and chalenges DLH. DLH might at one point in his career been considered a great fighter. But I refuse to believe that any self respecting boxing fan considered him a great fighter at the time he faced Mayweather. Also the DLH was not established as THE MAN at 154 given that he had only beaten Mayorga who possesed a previously vaceted title.
All this said, his achievements have been great and if we add the fact that he is a truelly gifted and highly skilled fighter the likes of which we have not seen since Leonard than there is no way we cannot consider him as great.
But you cannot make this argument bassed on opposition alone because it will fall short.
However, Mayweather still has a chance if any of the top WWs establishes that they are great. IMO none of the current welterweights has done that yet. Again they are all really good, just not great.

He won titles at 5 different Weight divisions, i didn't say he was World champion at 5 different weight classes. I may of worded it wrong but i meant to say he amongst the others i mentioned are the only boxers to win titles in 5 different weight classes not just World titles.
I just went back and looked at my post and it did seem like i put it that way, but i was typing a lot and i made a few mistakes no one is perfect ;)

Great read, Ice very detailed and informative (CC+ in 24)
Is Floyd a Great fighter? - Yes he is - he has beaten some top fighters and he has all the talent in the World.
Is he The Greatest of Alltime? No
Is he a Great Welterweight champion? On talent Yes but he hasn't beaten the best there is in the division so for now I say No.
