That is the late (RIP) great Gilberto Roman.
Gilberto Roman
The pic. was taken in Mexicali, Baja California in 1987. After he returned from France when he beat Antoine Montero the pic. was taken at friends wedding where both my pops and Gilberto were part of the wedding ceremonies. My pops said I was there and I met him but I don't remember it. After seeing the picture I somewhat remember the wedding but nothing about meeting the great Gilberto Roman.
Re: <-- My dad and his boxing friend --> (Picture Inside)
I'm a little shocked VD didn't get that. I've actually seen him fight before... I think it was against Rojas

Re: <-- My dad and his boxing friend --> (Picture Inside)
:appl: to POB.
I really suck:bawling:
Re: <-- My dad and his boxing friend --> (Picture Inside)
Amazing... Great fighter... Sadly I remember virtually nothing about him...
Great story, Mick. Well done!
Re: <-- My dad and his boxing friend --> (Picture Inside)
Nah! thank you guys for the talk. :)
Re: <-- My dad and his boxing friend --> (Picture Inside)
Mick, do you remeber the Rojas fight? I believe that Roman got robbed of a KD in the closing minutes(ruled a slip) and almost had him out of there...

30 seconds - 2 minutes either way it wasn't good enough.
Actually that's what my wife said last night.

Yeah it was KD and the ref. ruled it a slip. Gilberto boxed well that night and
Around that time is when Gilberto got more into Marijuana.
I believe he tested positive for the rematch fight and was fined a hefty amount for that.

Had a look at your favorite fighters list and i noticed "Ruben" i know your obviously implying Ruben Olivares, but another mexican boxer popped into my head Ruben Castillo ?
Nope not Ruben... I thought you saw Ruben Castillo fight vs. Salvador Sanchez?
The guy in the pic. looks nothing like Ruben Castillo.
Yea i've seen it i was just clutching at straws, plus im not good with faces.
As for Gilberto Roman i'll be honest i've never heard of him, but i have found a fight of his on youtube, so i'll go watch it now.

Re: <-- My dad and his boxing friend --> (Picture Inside)
That's him vs. Yoshiyuki Uchida.
Something great about Gilberto and lots of the smaller guys is they traveled to defend their titles, Argentina, Japan, Thailand, France etc. etc.
Gilberto fought often like 5 times a year and all around the world.
Facing #1 challengers and top contenders everywhere.
Re: <-- My dad and his boxing friend --> (Picture Inside)
Missed a good thread here, great stuff Mick.Roman was a nice technical boxer from what Ive seen.Liked to party a bit but was as well rounded and talented as they came.Shame he left so early.
Re: <-- My dad and his boxing friend --> (Picture Inside)
I had no idea who it was but I looked up all the guesses and man I've seen some great fighters in some great fights.
Thanks mick ;)
Re: <-- My dad and his boxing friend --> (Picture Inside)
