De La Hoya on Pacquiao defeat: 'I was embarassed'

Kan and Bilbo, Oscar has been boxing his entire life. He was elite in the amateurs, he was elite in the pros. Hes had many wars with to fighters and was always competitive. After 30 years of being in the ring, hundreds of amateur fights, many pro fights, a lot of them 12 rounders why is it so hard to believe that after taking a beating at the very end of his career all his reasons arent valid. For all those people who think Oscar is a phony, anyone who gets in the ring, as soon as that bell rings everything is on the table and with Oscar you always saw an honest fighter. He gave Manny his dues, what else is he supposed to do? Make a public apperarace wearing a Manny Pacquiao T-shirt and waving a Phillipino flag and proclaim that Manny is the greatest of time and he would have got his @ss whooped in his prime too and hes never fought anyone that hit as hard as Manny? Sometimes I wonder if certain fighters can ever be appreciated by some people no matter what they do.

Well i give pac his credit but people act like pac beat a prime Oscar and that to me i dont think is realistic like saying that Lito Torrecampo and Medgoen Singsurat beat a prime pac which i dont think was the case and for people saying weight was not a big deal tell me how it was health for a man to come in to weight he was not fought at for god knows how long going from weight in 160s to weight 145 and only gaing a few pounds come fight night that does not seem weird to anyone on this forum.

Good honest interview, ODH should have taken a bigger beating for the fans.

The man is saying that he quit, not because it was the only way he will walk away from the fight without incurring permanent physical disability from the destruction that his opponent easily inflicted on him. Rather, it was made "for him" by people that cared, albeit unknown to them, that he actually did not care, for the other guy lacked the power to hurt him. This was his message unveiled, unmasked. Pure baloney!

He did not need those two months, because "he" can throw any thought out there in public, in the open and...it will be heard and bought! The skill is remarkable, but not atop the ring!

Anyone will buy it all they want cause Oscar dela Hoya is in their heads anyway, waiting to tell them what they want to hear! Anytime they need to hear it!

Of course he did.... the time brings birth to empathy because people forget. It's a game and I agree he has developed skills of a master salesman. The premise is laid out for Mosley/Hoya III it's a gentle feeler to see if the paying public will buy into it. Had De La Hoya come out a week after the fight and said this, he'd risk many fans losing the sympathy they had for him. It's about Perception & Image and the goal is another payday.

You must mean for Pac fans. I dont think any Oscar fan, myself included, wanted to see him take a bigger beating.

Pacquiao was hitting line drives and the like, for six or seven rounds, he was not hitting him with haymakers, that is the reason why Hoya did not get KO'ed.

Much like the Diaz fight, a good portion of the early rounds were spent softening the target, that being Hoya. When the time came when the target no longer functioned aggressively to launch an offensive, relegated to a shred of a fighter, one dimensionally defensive, then the second phase kicked in.

The second phase was to batter into submission the soft target with haymakers, whilst it cowers in fear. Submissive to the fullest, the target is like livestock queued and ready for slaughter!

Turns out the Hoya camp need not see the second phase to be convinced of the futility of their endeavor. They've seen it before, they've seen the pattern, and the outcome from their conqueror's previous fight.

Credit to them that they are knowledgable enough to take their lumps, pack up, and fight another day!

Is it not, that that was what happened?

To say that the guy punches without power is to equally suggest, not to give due credit to the man for the win.

It was more his undoing than Pacquiao's doing.

Isn't it hypocritical, for right after the fight in the Merchant interview, he heaved all the praises at Pac, said all the right things, overdone to the point where it became uncomfortable to the later, only to come out two months after, stating that Pac couldn't punch.

Totally discrediting Pacquiao, and likewise, totally discrediting the victor.

In this scenario alone, all the others not in question, is Hoya a hypocrite? Guilty! Death by a thousand left straights!

no it just proves the same thing he proved when he beat Morales for the 2nd time, that basically he was in against a shot fighter or in DLH's case maybe not fully shot but a weight drained fighter, and how would Hatton beating Pacquiao prove anything?:-\ Hatton is getting to fight Pacquiao in his best weight class, he doesn't have to drain himself to go down to 135, Pacquiao/Hatton is completely irrelevant to DLH/Pacquiao, all in all i still give credit to Pacquiao, no so much on his win against DLH, but the way he fought, how he showcased exactly how much more skilled he has become, all the different punches that are in his arsinal i don't dispute the fact that Pacquiao is p4p the best fighter in the world, but he didn't beat a prime DLH, and a prime DLH would have beaten Pacquiao easily

Everyone is talking about this article like it's either vindication for Oscar or bull***t. I happen to think it's the latter. Oscar got exactly what he deserved in a career where he hand picked good but nonetheless over the hill opponents to complile his record and watch films of himself and masturbating until he came dust. Mr. DLH was embarassed when he badmouth and fought, Trinidad, Mosely, Hopkins and the Pacman. One example was when he fought for the WBO title as a junior lightweight against a weak looking opponent whose name escapes me. He fought J.C. Chavez at the end of his career and touted himself as great. The controversial win over Pernell Whittaker always stuck in my craw and then Oscar says he's embarassed? He got in one fight exactly what he did with opponents that had one foot over a grave and the other on a bannana peel. He pounded his chest when he beat a man who probably smokes two packs of cigaarettes a day in Mayorga but I never heard him call out Margarito or Cotto but Hatton is a small guy and maybe he and the Pac Man will have a hard fight and Oscar can have an easy time. I could go on but this might be enough. I don't hate the guy because I don't know him but I can always see if Showtime has a real fighter challenging guys that can fight back the same night Oscar is in the ring. Here's to the real boxers from the ham and eggers to the toughest champions, I salute you and Oscar, good riddance. No more gift decisions either.
