Re: MAyweather 4th all time in PPV sales
See here is the thing.
Why do people see "casual" fans as a negative?
When we all got into boxing we were casual fans as compared to the others who watched boxing for years and it was usually one boxer that got us into it that we started watching. Not everyone who watches boxing can be in it for years because eventually you need to bring in new viewers.
People need to stop trying to monopolize boxing in what they want it to be and when it isn't they call it a bad sign. Why? Because it isn't your vision of what boxing should be? Start thinking of boxing as a business, as a business it knows that we can't be there forever, the people that watched it for years cannot be the ONLY number or demographic tuning into boxing, if boxing counted on only us it would be screwed. Boxing NEEDS to bring in new viewers asap to keep business running smoothly.
That is why both Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao are so important to boxing, because they bring in many casual boxing fans, sure some can be annoying to us that have watched boxing for years because of their lack of understanding of things, but regardless, it is what boxing needs.
Boxing needs to bring in more casual fans and Mayweather has done a WONDERFUL job of doing that. He branched out to other venues during his retirement getting his name out there and putting boxing wherever he was concerned back on the map. And I must say he couldn't have picked a more perfect time.
You should have seen the internet, we had so many journalists, come even claiming they worked for boxing sites(now working for MMA sites) saying how boxing is dead and Mayweather couldn't revive it and all this other crap and cra. But you know what, thanks to those casual viewers, Boxing just got 1 mill in PPV buys proving it isnt and shutting any detractors up and we have Mayweather and his genius of a marketing mind do that.
Whether you like it or not Mayweather brings in a lot of casual fans nowadays and apparently more then Pacquiao does. Whether or not you see it as a bad sign is irrelevant, boxing NEEDS more casual viewers to get into the sport as a whole if they want to keep business going and that's just how it is.

Of course boxing needs casual viewers to replenish and build their fan base, but most of the young talent isn't shown enough on regular local tv or basic cable, it seems that the premium channels like HBO and Showtime have monopolize this for years. I remember 10 years ago I saw Juan Manuel Marquez fighting on local tv, I still remember when Tyson came out of prison and his fight against Buster Mathis was shown on regular Fox channel. Boxing needs to do things like that like have good talent on regular local tv or have the one really good fight to reach an wider audience. Yes we do have the internet, but tv is also important. I mean other sports like MLB, NBA, NFL, you can watch their best talents for free, but boxing you have to pay at least some sort of service to watch them. WHich is a bad business model to attract those casual viewer who will then become hardcore fans.
Re: MAyweather 4th all time in PPV sales
Boxing has gone along way since the days of Barry McGuigan getting 19 million viewers fighting Eusebio Pedroza in a soccer stadium.
What number is Floyd on the list of actual viewers? Pretty lowdown I would have thought.

I was the first one to shake my head when I heard that he weighed in 4lbs more than Marquez but you're actually saying people SHOULDN'T have tuned in and that "it's not a good sign"??
Listen to yourself! A lot of these buyers were probably casual fans so how the hell is it not a good sign that we are bringing more casual fans to the sport of boxing??
More fans to boxing = "not a good sign"?...ok then
Who the fu*k cares about how many people watched a fight if it was a dreadful fight!!
If you're not interested in discussing a fighter's PPV sales... then don't discuss them.
Job done, simple as. :cool::rolleyes:

I know it's true largely because of Pay Per View I'll doubt we'll ever see a big fight wit 19 million viewers ever again! unless boxing goes back to free to air television stations permanently! A new business model is required, if only there was a way to get rid of PPV fights boxing could easily become one of the most successful sports again as it's not that people find it not entertaining it's that it is not accessible.
I mean in england they had Prem Plus which was a Pay Per View Soccer/ Football channel soccer is the national sport and this channel still flopped! people already pay subscriptions for their satelite or cable they do not want to pay an additional fee for a sport.
Pay Per View is Killing Boxing! this doesn't detract from the fact that Floyd is clearly the biggest draw in the current climate.

Nooo!!! Not the miles has turned bitter thing again! :p
I agree that it's a good thing that boxing has an audience, but I also think that if that audience is forking out nigh on 50 dollars to watch a fight then it should be Mayweather taking on a serious challenge and against an opponent who can actually compete at his weight. I felt that the Mayweather/Marquez fight was a bit of a con all in all. Boxing can make better matchups than that and a paying public deserves better than that too.
Fair enough Miles.
I understand your point but as long as the general public enjoyed it (and I think they did), that is the main thing because they won't feel conned.
I see why you feel conned but again, you're thinking as a hardcore fan.
My girlfriend stayed up to watch the fight with me and even though it wasn't the most action packed fight, she thought it was great. Due to Floyd's speed, agility and dominance etc.
She doesn't really know the first thing about boxing and I imagine if she enjoyed it, then a whole heap of other casual fans did as well.

I think he has played the retirement ploy perfectly. He always knew he would come back, so did some of us, but the general Joe on the street bought it hook, line & sinker. I'm willing to bet that Mayweather would not have made nearly as much money from fighting Marquez straight after he beat Hatton, compared to fighting him now. What builds interest more than the return of a star? An unbeaten star at that... an unbeaten star that appeared on two very, very widely watched mainstream shows in America. The man knows how to play the game, in and out of the ring.
Floyd has increased his notoriety massively with his mainstream appearances, and all the while he was building anticipation with the speculation of his possible return. Just because someone is not a fan-favourite, does not mean they will not sell well (Many people seem to fail to grasp this point!). Fans enjoy enemies, Floyd knows this, we all do. You are just as likely to cheer for the loss of someone that you hate, as you are for the victory of someone that you adore. Mayweather always slotted into the bad-guy role, made himself appear like a prick, and the majority of people bought it all along, lining his pockets with just as much dough as fighters that are generally worshipped as Gods.
Floyd has his fans too of course, usually those that appreciate the sweet science at its most fluid and see passed his bad-boy antics (or maybe even appreciate them!) I have always enjoyed Floyd and how well he can rile people up, and of course once he steps foot in the ring it is like poetry in motion most of the time. A phenomenal talent, for real.
Good on him for being successful, in more ways than one.
My :twocents:
PBF isn't smart enough to plan all this marketing. He's been fortunate for the type of promotions he's been in, and is enjoying a Jon and Kate, tabloid celebrity status. He's known but not as a fan favorite, and he didn't plan it. No more did Brittany Spears plan here personal life meltdown to make her more of a superstar. Floyd is an amazing athlete, but he's not a smart guy, if so he wouldn't be getting cars repo'd and his record company would be making money.
Just can't stand to here all the Mayweather fans constantly saying how he's such a genius. He's an underachiever. He should be Michael Jordan, and instead he's Allen Iverson. His talent is unmatched, but his popularity is mediocre.

Let's ignore you choosing to compare a boxer to a man widely suspected of murder. Let's focus on you inability to differentiate between 'popular' and 'well liked'. (I'll give you a clue they mean the same thing)
I meant famous, instead of popular. Good catch.

Yeah man. Mayweather is far from a boring fighter at 140 and lower, but you're absolutely right about the De la Hoya and Baldomir fights. Those were real snooze fests. These two fights made me not want to ever buy a Mayweather PPV again.
I watched Mayweather/Marquez on the internet. He won is an impression fashion so I decided that I'll pay for his next ppv bout if the opponent is a worthy one.

First things first, we don't know how smart Floyd really is. All we see of him comes through the camera lens. In the man's own words before the De La Hoya fight; "I know I always have to play the bad guy to sell tickets."
The fact is, Floyd is a terrific bad guy. Just like movies need heroes and villains, as does professional wrestling, boxing does too if you look at it as a business. Who inspires more hatred than Mayweather? Why does he talk trash about his opponent in the months leading up to the fight, then suddenly become all respectful and nice to them straight after? He is playing a role and maximizing his profits, and it's working. If you don't like the guy, congratulations, he got you. ;)

I would certainly say Pac has a bigger hardcore fanbase, but I think their respective numbers against the same opponents show Floyd is the bigger 'draw'. I do think they are the only 2 currently transcending the sport in any way, although Cotto is not far off & I suspect he does the same should he beat Manny.
I am not sure Jaz, I think that Pacman has the hand over as well on the casual fan because of the excitement he smears all around, as it as been quoted below, I think that Floyd got a bit more excitement and used to sell a bit more because of the 24/7 and because of the way he got into rangeview with the WWE, Dancing with the stars etc. I still agree and am willing to admit that he drags more than what I wanted to say or think but still not enough to be compared to the Pacman in term of rentability and popularity. Not yet.
Your talking about your personal opinion and not the facts! Pacman is not in the top 10 all time PPV attractions despite the fact that every boxing fan knows he is more exciting than Floyd. (Not a better fighter) Floyd is 4th on that list, fourth! that means that he has to be considered the biggest PPV fighter out at the moment. in my opinion Pacmans next fight will do huge numbers close to or over a million aswell but the fact with that is Cotto is a huge draw and so is pac. when Floyd fought Marquez he was the huge draw Marquez is no huge draw!! Mayweather can do a million now fighting anybody! he is a huge draw.
First of all, can I know where do come from your numbers? Not that I call you a liar or something but when I get handed a huge list of numbers, I would like to know the source in order to see if they are viable, fictive or exaggerate so the source would be greatly appreciated.
Second, you cannot compare one second the number when Pacman fought Marquez and when he fought Mayweather as it is 2 VERY different situations: At the time, there has been no 24/7 to hype the fight and such tv shows are just SOOO much of a boost, would Pacman va Marquez been hyped that way, you can be 100% assured that the numbers would have been a lot bigger.
Third, If these numbers which you state are real and accurate, well, I just made a mistake and overlook Mayweather popularity or ability to drag peoples who want to see him lose and you won't ever see me saying Mayweather doesn't drag publicity and a crowd :)
Re: MAyweather 4th all time in PPV sales
Very impressive, especially considering styles. The three guys ahead of him offer some of the most fan friendly styles in boxing history (with DLH and Tyson as vicious knockout artists, and Holyfield being a fight-to-the-death warrior).
Considering Floyd's consensus "boring" style, its pretty remarkable that he's in this class now.
As far as guys who can be potential future PPV stars, its impossible to tell. There are tons of guys out there who have fan-friendly styles and mainstream ability, but becoming a house hold name like these guys requires that certain spark, and obviously great marketing.
What we need is a charasmatic personality with great skills to come aroudn and knock the shit out of PBF.

On the first page there is a link to an article with he numbers in, It is not presented in list format but contains all of the details this Article was written by Yahoo sports prior to the Mayweather Marquez fight; so after you read this article add another million PPV buys to the number as reported by HBO and a variety of other sites.

Thanks a lot, I underestimated FLoyd capacity to drag peoples.
