My pick would be the famous , Calzaghe vs Manfredo , an unbeaten champion pitted against the very best challenger out there , toe to toe action , evenly matched it had the lot.
haha ;D The Undefeated Vs the Best from the West they cann Manfredo :lolhaha:

You may laugh but how many fights draw 70,000 people. Only in Wales, as Warren would say.
Re: what is the most famous fight in boxing history??
ALI V FRAZIER 1
THRILLER IN MANILLA
RUMBLE IN THE JUNGLE
ALI V LISTON 1
LOUIS V SCHMELLING 2
DEMPSEY V TUNNEY
JOHNSON V JEFFRIES
SULLIVAN V CORBETT
LEONARD V DURAN 1
(Mayweather v Pacquiao)?
For over a hundred years it was the Heavyweights that made the headlines, thus my reason for including only one non HW fight on my list.
It is there because i think Leonard V Duran captured the imagination of world sports fans whether they liked boxing or not. Mayweather V Pacquiao might just do the same thing.
The others were all front page news items in their day, Jeffries was lured out of retiremnet to fight Johnson, $100,000 film rights were paid..it was a huge occaision. Louis V Schmelling 2 had the whole Nazi thing hanging over it. Sullivan was thought to be unbeatable, Dempsey had the long count and of course ALI was the king of mega fights and all of those i mention are mega fights.
Re: what is the most famous fight in boxing history??
The Rumble in the Jungle is still a part of our popular culture and within personal recall of that generation. Fifty years from now Louis vs Schmeling will still be what it is.

I disagree. When the day comes that Ali leaves us, that fight will be immortalised to an even larger extent than it is now.
Re: what is the most famous fight in boxing history??
I'd have to say Dawson Tarver II. You had the champ coming back for his crown, and an undefeated youngster. One word sums this up...Classic!

Asking what does boxing mean to history as a whole as much as the history of the sport?Has to be any that transcended the sport be it for a specific era,a famous photo,a unique incident a boxer that does the same automatically becomes an over all historical fixture,cough,Ali.Ali/Liston & that pic....Tyson/Holyfield & the bite sadly, (I'd bet that the arm chair 'casual' fans might forget they fought twice?)...Leonard/Durans series & 'No mas'...becomes its own catch phrase.

The photo from Ali-Liston 2 has to be the most famous boxing picture ever. Followed by probably Rocky (Balboa), and then the real Rock.
Re: what is the most famous fight in boxing history??
Most famous is def Ali v Foreman no question...
Some of Jack Johnsons victories over white fighters ended in hundreds of race killings right across the US.. though.
Some of his fights (Jeffries) are right up there with the most important for sure ;)
I know this because of this;D
MUST SEE DOCUMENTARY amazing the stuff you can learn from watching this.
Unforgivable Blackness: The Rise And Fall Of Jack Johnson (2005) - Quicksilverscreen Forum!
Re: what is the most famous fight in boxing history??
Going to have to go with Louis-Schmelling. For what was riding on the fight, Hitler was on that whole aryan thing and Joe shut em down. Master race eh? Gave alot of people hope and there were party in the streets after that. Ali-Foreman was more of a personal thing to me not a country vs another country.
Re: what is the most famous fight in boxing history??
For me ..ALI vs FRAZIER 1. :o
.
Re: what is the most famous fight in boxing history??

Calzaghe-Tocker Pudwell? Interesting choice. Any votes for the epic Riddick Bowe-Michael Dpkes thriller?
