Mick the Grammy's are American though, of course an American boxer will be more popular in America! Manny's global fanbase is rapdily growing however.

I'm would say it's a fair bet that Manny is more popular than Oscar across Asia and seeing as that continent holds well over half the entire world's population I reckon he wins.

What other boxer in the world could fight in a country not his own, against a fighter also not from that country and put on the biggest PPV fight of the year there?

Pac is massive. He may not go to the Grammy's but he does hang out with his country's president!

I would tend to agree with that and i wouldn't be surprised of Pacquiao-Mayweather (admitting it happens) could have more PPV than Mayweather-DLH.

I think Pac is more known in Asia then Oscar is, I dont think that is up for debate. In america I think Oscar is still up there but their fight gave Pac more popularity then it gave Oscar. Oscar was more popular going into the fight but Pac putting on that kind of performance infront of millions of fans and people who knew Oscar. Those who knew Oscar now know Pac.

I dont get how some are saying pac is only big in the Philippines? Not only does the Philippines take pride in Pac but so does many of the other countries in ASIA. MMA have always been big in ASIA and if you follow the MMA world, many will mention boxing only because of guess who -> PACMAN!

I think anybody who gets a visit from a man like Denzel Washington is pretty damn special. ;D

For the record Oscar De La Hoya has NEVER been a household name in Britain. None of my nonboxing friends will have a clue who he is.

He's huge in America, and may well be in Spanish speaking countries to that share a heritage with Mexico I don't know. But globally (in britain at least) he's not even close to a Mike Tyson or Roberto Duran or an Ali imo.

the main reason why pacquiao is like God-like in his country is because they don't have any sports stars there! if the philippines had multiple megasports stars, do you think he'd be as popular as he is now? of course he wouldn't. those poor people, until now, had nobody to cheer for. it's good that pacquiao arrived in the philippines because that was basically a dead country, sports wise.

here in the U.S., we can pick from hundreds of sports stars in baseball, hockey, football, boxing, basketball and others. boxing isn't a mainstream sport here anymore. boxers like mike tyson, muhammad ali, oscar, sugar ray leonard are household names and pacquiao will never have the popularity of these four boxers. the only ones who know pacquiao here are boxing fans and his filipino fans. maybe pacquiao is more recognized in asia, big deal! the U.S. is the mecca of boxing and this is where popularity counts the most because this is where the biggest fans live and where the boxing money is.

This is very interesting about Oscar not being a household name there. Considering that Britain has a very good history in boxing and this is where modern boxing originated.

This is very interesting about Oscar not being a household name there. Considering that Britain has a very good history in boxing and this is where modern boxing originated.

Boxing really isn't that big over here any more sadly. The two overseas fighters that everybody knows are Tyson and Holyfield. Then it would be Leonard, Hagler, Duran and Hearns.

De La Hoya, Jones Jr, Hopkins are not really big names. Actually Hopkins and Jones Jr are better known over here as they fought Calzaghe.

Pacqauio isn't a big name either to be fair. You go down the average high street and ask people who Oscar and Manny are. Not many will have a clue. EVERYONE will know who Tyson is.

Oh and Ali of course, and Foreman, possibly Frazier.

Sugar Ray Robinson is less well known than any of those heavyweight guys.

When Oscar lost his fans were still behind him. They still loved him and his haters still hated him. When Pac loses you will see a drop big time. Especially on this forum and many other forums where Pac Land obsessions rave an rant on the internet. Most of his fans will diminish and 20yrs from now he will just be like Barry Bonds with a huge asterisk.....if not for roids...for beating people on there way out. oscars popularity was something else when he was at his prime......de la hoya was the biggest draw in boxing at his peak....even when passed his best he headlined the biggest ppv event when he fought mayweather ( did you guys think those buys where for mayweather to watch him run all night ) pacmans great tho he's become the biggest name in the sport right now
