But I have always found it off that a redneck like yourself would care anything at all about soccer.
I love how people just assume I'm some toothless yokel...I'm actually quite cultured and yes I appreciate soccer, hell I played it growing up just like I played lacrosse and ice hockey, yup ice hockey.....I love sports. I'm continually shocked (and this is a bit off topic) that people in or around sports can be liberal (mind I'm not calling you one) I just think its contradictory there are mismatches in sports all the time
nobody levels the playing field to compensate for talent or coaching and when the little David topples Goliath without help, without an even "fair" playing field its monumental.
BTW I was a huge goon in ice hockey and lacrosse....I mean they gave me a 6 ft metal stick and it was LEGAL for me to hit people with it, I mean holy shit!
They do in American football with the shitty draft system. That's why I stopped watching it. If a team is so shit that they lose every game why do they get the reward of first draft pick the following year?
It's anti biblical. 'To him who has more shall be given, and he shall have an abundance. But to him who has not, even that which he has shall be taken away'...
Can't we stick to the Bible version? That's what we do in the UK. You finish bottom of the football league you are told to 'FUCK OFF' and get booted into amatuer football with someone more deserving coming in.
But I definitely agree with your sentiments Lyle. Sport should reflect talent and eliteness. It's not a meritocracy nor should it ever be.
First of all, in American football (as you probably know), there is no D1, D2, D3 etc, so the shit teams of the moment do not go down to another league,it is pointless in the NFL.
Second, the system of the NFL is, in my eyes, amazing: even small clubs can survive damn well, it's not a matter of the richest always winning the most. As proof, the Washington Redskins which is the second most valuable franchise after the Cowboys are shit years after years because they do not draft well and are just not able to put on a coherent system. ON the other hand, you have smaller clubs like the Green Bay packers (a small city of +/- 150 000 souls) has one of the most decorated team over the years if not the most if we consider the national championship they won previous the existence of the superbowl.
Third, the Draft Order is a bonus but it doesn't change the whole thing upside down. If you scroll down the history of the drafts, you will see that more than often, the top players aren't even picked in the top 10 draft, it is often lower if not plainly second or third round pick. It is very hard in American Football to see who will be the next big thing. For example, the Steelers didn't have any top 10 picks for the past couple of years but they always manage to find some pearls, thanks to Colbert, their recruiting mastermind.
The system is not shit at all, the NFL is the most well rounded and profitable league game for game in America and the revenue sharing/draft system plays a huge role in it, it is no more the richest teams running alone the front show and it provides some excitement every years as it's not always the same big 4 winning all the pot. In the last 20 superbowls, 10 different teams shared the honors, how great is that? Teams have to be damn good strategically and manage their assets the better and the top 10 picks, though it does represent an advantage, doesn,t determine at all the issue of the season.
