Re: 10 Years Ago Today - Calzaghe battered Lacy
That was a fun watch in all honesty. Once Lacy was compared to "top Holyfield" with best win being Robin Reid you knew they were just pumping smoke for someone else's fire. Top notch Joe just beat the crap out of him. On a side hope Lacy stays out. He's been brutalized recent and last fight date fell through thankfully. Guy had big brass..have to respect that.

I have found this, it does not make me look good! But it does give you idea of my opinions pre fight, and I do not think I was alone in such opinions (SimonH = Me, for those who do not know):

I was there & I cannot believe that it was 10 years ago already.
Re: 10 Years Ago Today - Calzaghe battered Lacy
What an absolutely fantastic night that was!
I remember four of us went up, and the Friday night we was absolutely steaming, running around Manc drinking at anywhere that would let us in. Got to the MEN on the Saturday, cheap tickets up in the gods, and one of the lighting gantries was hanging at an angle and obstructing the view. Naturally kicked off that we weren't going to miss the fight because of that, and they moved us downstairs to the section of seats that was just outside the ringside ones (there were quite a few empty seats around us, so not sure if it was a sell out?). Spotted Gordon Ramsey and a couple of other celebs knocking around.
The fight itself was stunning, I'd bought into the Lacy hype as well, and thought it was going to be a really tough fight too. When the guys were chanting "easy easy" in the second or the third, I thought the pendulum was going to swing back...but it never did! Awesome night, probably my favorite throughout Joe's career. Ten years goes by too fast!
Re: 10 Years Ago Today - Calzaghe battered Lacy
Joe bashed him up good and proper but he was genuinely shit scared of him. I remember Frank Warren completely losing it with me/saddo's on a conference call for a fight I cant remember because someone here posted that Joe was pulling the bad hands routine to try and get out of the fight. He went spastic saying it was bollocks but Frank has since said himself it was legit and that Joe had to have him arm seriously twisted to go through with it.
Cracking performance. I remember Mad Dog saying at the time having never watched Calzaghe. It's like he's got six arms. I thought that was pretty apt.

Lacy definitely got an ass kicking! I felt sorry for the guy, taking a beating in front of the entire boxing community, but that's boxing. A hell of a way to find out you really aren't that good!;D
Re: 10 Years Ago Today - Calzaghe battered Lacy
Joe was close to pulling out because of the fragile hands and he did do that for Glenn Johnson. Think hid dad said to him get in there. I bet he was glad he was persuaded because it was one of his best wins.

Every time this fight is mentioned these days Frank proudly brings up that he had to convince Calzaghe to get in the ring.

I know Mayweather hands are not great but Calzaghe hands were much worse right. I mean I never seen a guy with no power put the other fighter in retreat i think if he keep some of his strength from his younger days and his fighting style as he got older he would of been unstoppable.

Yes Joe could hit in the early days. He put Eubank down in the first round and Chris had an unbelievable chin.

Nothing wrong with being someone who didn't think Calzaghe was coming out on top. All the hype said he couldn't do it, and when all the pundits have him as an outside shot, then it makes you think. I think it also made winning so much sweeter!

I'm not so sure he was that big of a puncher, especially in terms of one punch power. His fight against Tyrone Jackson saw a lot of punches where Jackson was just taking them without answer, and looking back at Joe with a smile.
