The guy is a twat, but let's not deflect all the blame here. He's partly at fault , but the trainer and Blackwell himself have to take the lions share of the blame.

One newspaper reported that Blackwell had been part of an "unsanctioned" sparring session.

Is there such a thing, seeing as he wasnt a pro anymore?

I don't understand why he was sparring, but I hope he makes a full recovery and decides to use the gym only as a means of working out. No need to take any risks like that when there is no longer any money to be made in it. I get that people have pride, but that can only take you so far. Stay home and watch the telly, it's not so bad.
