Re: MMA bigger than Boxing?
It's always nice when everyone cools down.
I agree that as of right now, in most of the world, boxing is ranked higher in popularity, with the exception of Brazil and Japan. MMA has been rapidly increasing as far as popularity goes. It being legalized in California, to me, symbolizes that it will keep getting bigger and bigger, and widely be considered an actual sport as opposed to street fighting, and take over as the most popular combat sport. I think soon it will go back to it's original roots and become an Olympic sport. The evolution of MMA is moving at a faster pace than the evolution of boxing, which is why people fail to notice it.

UFC started out in '93 completely barbaric, with no holds barred. Then, they evolved into a more sanctioned and organized fed, with rounds, and certain rules.
Mike Tyson goes crazy, bringing the boxing world to the main stream once more. Then, he beats his wife, goes on Oprah, no one cares about him anymore. Boxing falls out of the mainstream.
Meanwhile, Pride FC is rockin the S*** in Japan. Sweet fights, awesome fighters, all fighting in what's quite similar to a boxing ring.
Fox attempts to bring boxing into the mainstream by airing "The Next Great Champ," but since FOX sucks at ratings, no one watches it. It gets cancelled.
Then UFC decides to make a reality TV show. TNN decides to turn into Spike TV. Since Spike is considered to be the first network for men, they had no problem putting MMA on cable, and brings it to the main stream. People see Bobby Southworth cut 20 pounds in one day, and then they're immediately hooked to the show.
Boxing makes an attempt to hit the mainstream by airing the Contender, however, NBC decides to give it a terrible time slot, and it fails in Ratings.
UFC airs a full event on Cable TV, and promotes the S*** out of UFC 52. More and more fans are hooked after seeing Stephan vs. Forest.
MMA gets legalized in California. Their having en event at the Staples Center, home to some of the greatest boxing matches of all time.
Now, people are more familiar with the name Chuck Lidel than Jermaine Taylor.
It's a mad mad mad mad mad mad mad world.
I love UFC, but there's no way it will ever eclipse boxing, in my opinion. Unless I'm mistaken, UFC's PPV numbers don't hit the heights of the few megafights we have per year in boxing. I could be wrong, but I'm fairly certain that boxing still gets the PPV buys. And that's not to mention that boxing has greater variety. UFC have very few main eventers. Now that they've done Couture vs Lidell/Ortiz to death, they might struggle to maintain popularity. Quite simply, MMA doesn't boast as many fighters at this moment and that really limits the sport.

UFC is getting more and more main eventers. Franklin, Hughes, GSP, Sylvia, Arlovski, Ortiz, and Chuck are the biggest buys right now. I think within the next year or so we're gonna see some good and new top talent in North America. The thing about UFC is that once you lose, you're basically done. They tend to give few chances. This is why Pride is more exciting, and better. If you lose a fight in Pride, it's not that big a deal. They give you more and more opportunities to learn from your loses, and become a better fighter. Thus, Pride has a wide variety of Main Eventers.

Re: MMA bigger than Boxing?
I actually watch some UFC the weekend and the good fights were very entertaining but some were :cwm33:
It is no where near boxing but in a couple of years you never know
I still think a boxer would kick ass in that ring.
look at this way, what usually gets people knocked out?
Yes punches so how could a ufc fighter compete with a boxer trading punches
I know some one will come back with grappling or submission but a boxer would KO him at first opportunity
If a UFC fighter could box at world level they would cos there is more money in boxing.
hardly any ufc fighters have undefeated records cos its not as skilled as boxing and anyone has a chance.

These are the posts that piss me off bad!!!! a NHB Fighter wouldnt trade with a boxer DUH!!! He would be to busy Kicking him clinching him kneeing him in the face, take him to the ground sub him or ground and pound!!!! 2 different concentration and allert levels MMA is like Flying a fighter jet thru a dog fight compared to boxing which is like riding your bike thru the park
Boxing is fists only!!!!!! MMA is utilizing and defending against heads, elbows, knees, legs, takedowns and over a 1000 submissions

Re: MMA bigger than Boxing?
It's about longevity and censoring. Boxing has been more popular for longer, and I think a big part is because of TV. MMA was viewed as being too brutal for all audiences. As far as I know, it has never been shown on regular TV. And since boxing IS more popular, you can make more money gambling on it than MMA. I'd say that has a part in it too. You know what gambling can do for a sport.

Agreed to a certain point it was good to see UFC starting up on tv a few years ago Spike tv has the reality show plus regular fights

Re: MMA bigger than Boxing?
I've actually seen quite a bit of MMA on TV. King of the Cage is being played regularily, and Spike is consistantly playing TUF, UFC Unleashed, UFC All Access, and Ultimate Fight Nights.
Quick tidbit on the brutality aspect:
A lot of idiots find MMA to be brutal and dangerous. Moreso than boxing. However, the reality of it is that boxing is a far more dangerous sport, mainly because you have less options. In MMA, you don't have to stand for 12 rounds and throw punches at one and other. If you feel you're getting hurt bad by punches, you can try and take the fight to the ground, throw kicks, knees, clinche, etc.
In boxing, everything is primarily focused on your head. If you compared a retired boxer to a retired MMAer, the odds are the boxer would have suffered more damage to his head throughout his career, thus causing damage to his brain.
Boxers get hit by 80 huge bombs in every fight. MMAers get hit by, at the most, 80 huge bombs in their entire career.

I agree with the brutality issue, but I was getting more at what the networks will allow on TV. As for Spike, where I live, Spike is a cable network, being that you have to pay for it. I've never seen MMA on ABC, NBC, FOX, or CBS. I've seen boxing on most of them, which everyone gets those stations.

Proof that MMA isnt bigger then boxing is what boxers get paid compared to MMA fighters, whens the last time you heard of an MMA fighter getting paid 20 million dollars for one fight?

Larry, he wasn't arguing the fact that MMA is bigger, and if you look through out this thread I think almost everyone is in agreement that Boxing is bigger. All that most people are saying is that MMA is growing fast and it possibly could become equal or bigger. Now the comment about a boxer dominating in a MMA event is pretty absurd. These fighters are well versed any several combat disciplines. They all train in boxing. That doesn't make any of them a world champion boxer, but it gives them enough skill to use their other disciplines to dominate the boxer. Not to mention that I think you'd have to agree that "boxing" and fighting with 4 ounce gloves is not the same.

Re: MMA bigger than Boxing?
In case you douche bags havent been reading the entire thread, we covered all those aspects.
So I'll say it once more:
Boxing = Bigger, but plummeting
MMA = Smaller, but rising
Pride's Cro Cop and Fedor are raking in over a million for their fights. No 20 mil, but it's getting there.
As popularity increases, so does the cash money.
