I'm going to half way agree with you on one thing....I don't think that the training and skill sets in MMA are as technical as the ones that are required in boxing. I think MMA is a sport that puts much more emphasis on physical abilities. Things like hand speed(or foot), punching power, strength, cardio agility and reflexes are more important than throwing a picture perfect jab or utilizing a great shoulder role in MMA. The aspects of submission wrestling are very technical but unless you compete in it and can look very amateurish. If great boxers are 60% technique and 40% athleticism then I'd say MMA is the opposite

Re: Media mainstream sportscenter starts show with mma vs boxing debate
As far as putting on a show for the fans, going out of its way to give something back, the UFC is single handedly destroying boxing. I went to UFC 70, and on the Friday I attended the weigh in, met all the fighters, and at the after party Dana White bought a beer for 80 guys, including myself, my seat in the arena was terrific and it was £120 for the weekend. I went to Calzaghe v Lacy and the weigh-in was closed, nothing but a big fuck you, and my seat in the same block was £315. Can you see why its making all the money? They give a lot back to the fans, boxing gives us a cock up our ass.

At the highest level I disagree. Randy Coutoure has consistently proven it's not about physical youth and energy and imo to throw the perfect leg kick, like Cro Cop for example takes every bit as much skill as throwing a punch.
MMA stars have a different throw style to boxers because the gloves are different. It's like comparing a swordsman's style to someone skilled with an axe. His movements will be different because of the weapon he uses, and UFC fighters use totally different gloves to boxers.
The same defensive and offensive skills in boxing won't work in the UFC and vice versa because the gloves are a completely different size, shape and form. You can't compare.

Another huge difference between boxing and MMA, in boxing you can have an off night and you can squeak out a decision. In MMA you have a slightly off night, and you go to sleep.

Great post man. CC. Boxing has treated its fans like mindless pieces of shit for way too long, the mindset of most promoters in boxing seems to be that we should be happy to eat whatever bullshit they are feeding us, and tough for us if we don't like it. Rather than the differences between the sports, that above all else is probably what is propelling UFC above boxing in the casual fans mind. Look at the difference between the Contender and the Ultimate Fighter - one has a glossy, manipulated, and ultimately phony product, the other is as real as it gets. I honestly prefer the Contender, because of my love for boxing, but there is no doubt which is the better, more honest show. That in itself is a microcosm of what is wrong with our beloved sport.

Re: Media mainstream sportscenter starts show with mma vs boxing debate
I agree Bilbo that there are many boxing techniques that dont directly translate to MMA. I also feel that the top MMA strikers have taken boxing and kickboxing techniques and morphed them into the MMA game. I wasn't saying that there isn't any strategy of technique to the sport, but I don't think that the skill sets in MMA need the same detailed and refined techniques that boxing does. I think Fedor is a good example: he has great power and hand speed. He overwhelms opponents, but I wouldn't call it a real technical punching spectacle. Chuck does use a counterpunchign style by using good footwork and angles that shows more technique than the typical MMA strike though. I do agree the hich kicks from Mirko and snapping MT leg kicks of many are definately techniques that take alot of skill and training.

Re: Media mainstream sportscenter starts show with mma vs boxing debate
wow trainer monkey you have made many gay refrences and have gone out of your way to tell us you have a wife ??? I think you should get ahold of your phobia. biblo, van I think that in many cases physical ability has dominated boxing as well George Forman was not technically sound and Ive heard many boxing anylists say that Ali got away with pulling straight back only becouse of his speed, and there are many other examples. So this mascarade of perfection that boxing puts on is crap, the concept of boxing is perfect but I have seen very few who come close. I believe that there is a perfect concept for MMA as well, there is a counter for every move and there are opptions from every position Fador moves seemlesly from one situation to the next thats what makes mma great, its the mental game to stay ahead of your apponent. The difference is like boxing is playing chess with only pawns a queen and castles where mma is using all the pieces. And it just seems like monkey cant wrap his brain around that

Mma won't hurt boxing, it can only make it better. Boxing still has a huge and i mean HUGE fanbase despite all of its current problems. Boxing being in a state of dispair (as you would cal it) is the only thing giving the ufc a chance.

Re: Dibella and Rogan fighting over UFC and boxing on Sportscenter
Now that you got your national media attention you've always been looking for have fun with the backlash of having every dui, and domestic dispute reported between your fighters. Have fun when other organizations try to out do the ufc and corruption comes about like in all things. The only reason it hasn't fallen off is because it wasn't in position to take a fall. Now that its on this national pedestal of glory prepare to endure the things boxing has had to over the past many many years, hope you make it out in one peice ;D

Re: Media mainstream sportscenter starts show with mma vs boxing debate

Re: Media mainstream sportscenter starts show with mma vs boxing debate
I just thought i'd announce to everyone that the ufc will be doomed in a few years because i've come up with one better. Something so entertaining and violent nothing could compete with its fanbase. I now present to you the blueprints for Extreme Punishment Fighting:
All events will occur in norway and inbewteen rounds the music played will be that of ramstein, Demuborgir, and The Death Spiders (a death metal band from norway that only plays The scorpians and 50cent covers)
First of all octagons are for pussies our non title fights take place in the TRAPazoid of terror
(for those geometrically challenged) _______ (a rectangle that narrows to a square top)
/ \
/_________\
This Geometric ring of Gigantic terror (which is surrond by barbed wire fencing) will house battlebotesque obstacles such as periodically throwing thumbtacs into a ringside fan, opening the ring floor to a series of snakes and bear traps (non poisonous snakes and dulled down bear traps because we care about the safety of our fighters ;D) and some other crazy stuff i can't list here. All fights have a 1 round 20 minute time limit
Now comes the title fights that take place in the Skull of Doom. The structure is a Huge skull shaped ring covered in razor wire fencing that has no hazards like the TRAPazoid of Terror but it does have a pyrotechnic rig that shoots a huge pillar of flames in the air everytime someone is slammed on the ring. Around the ring are a bunch of female strippers (completely nude for ppv events) and all fights have a one round 36 minute time limit.
Yeah you better hope i dont get my hands on a couple mil and a flight to norway.

Re: Media mainstream sportscenter starts show with mma vs boxing debate
Its funny how the close minded boxing fan mentions about mma being brutal and overly violent. But then post a vid of tne most brutal knockouts in boxing and the best part is that in those matches the guy probably took 100s of punchs before the one that knocked him out. In many mma matches there is a chess match of grappling and an arm lock where the fight is stopped before any injury occurs. It sounds like some of you can't figure it out becouse its too complicated or your really homiphobic which is funny becouse in boxing in the clinch don't they put there heads right up against each others and maybe hold each other. Of course its rediculous and you should really grow up becouse when your arguements turn into predgudice it just highlights your lack of intelegents.

He hasn't done too well in MMA either. It's because it's a different skillset. It's ridiculous to argue who has better athletes.
As far as promotion and organization. MMA is light years ahead of boxing. That is why MMA is growing. It's leadership and promotion and organization. Boxing is fragmented in all those areas. The disparity between a top fighter and an average fighter is horrible. You got guys that make 10 Mill for one fight, and guys that make $500 bucks. It is both the richest and poorest. That's because of no organization. UFC guys aren't making $10 mil for a fight, but their lowest guy doesn't make $500. They have their shit together in that department.

more rounds more time that doesn't equal better condition I've seen many champ boxers take half the rounds off it just makes it more like a marithon than a sprint. So by your logic a marithon runner is more of an athlete that Carl Lewis. And why are u proud ofsomeone dying in the ring ???

-1 right back at yeah. For one its not a intolerant opinion on the stereotypical generalizing of these men.....if you can call them men. I'm sure you watch The Ultimate Fighter on spike TV. Those jagoffs are so low class they cant keep it in the ring. They will fight in the house of the man that will maybee be signing their paychecks. And no one gets in between before something happens. All I see is wrestlers you are full of them self's who cant throw or take a punch. There hands aren't fast enough to slap a guy with a left hook or a short upper cut when he tries to chute. Those shows are full of them.Watch the first and second contender and compare them to the Chris Lebins who urinate on peoples pillows and get drunk and make complete idiots of them self's.Hell, compare the two houses and get back with me. Another thing I'm not a bigot. I'm from Ohio not Texas.

But seriously, I don't agree with the UFC's angle of "we're overtaking boxing", but it's views like the ones in this topic that are feeding that fire. Slighting the UFC or MMA does no good. And The Ultimate Fighter is miles better then the Contender. Look at it this way, TUF got millions of fans to MMA, did the Contender do the same for boxing? Of course there is the whole issue of demographics when arguing just what is more popular in the states but you get my point.

Adam, I have maintained all along that entertainment value is subjective so if you dont like it fine by me.. You dont see me trying to cram it down other peoples throat.. The problem that I have is when people make biggoted statements and downgrade the ACTUAL skill it takes to compete and degrade their efforts. its bullshit!!!
The Gracie family did it right years ago and settled things the traditional way, if you have a problem with my art then lets settle it style to style and see who's better they would go to a Judo studio etc and challenge or accept a challenge.... Well needless to say alot of people got broken limbs and respect beaten into them....
-
Re: Media mainstream sportscenter starts show with mma vs boxing debate
Yeah I know that. It is subjective, just like boxing is subjective. But the thing that gets me is, a football fan who doesn't like boxing doesn't call boxing illegitimate. So why do boxing fans call MMA illegitimate. I'm not a fan of figure skating myself, but I do recognize the skill and the dedication it takes. Why boxing fans can't do the same with MMA, even if they don't like watching it, is beyond me.
-
Re: Media mainstream sportscenter starts show with mma vs boxing debate
I was harsh on MMA earlier....I just don't think it's for me, I don't like it never have never will. And I think people will overwhelmingly rather watch a good boxing match than a good MMA match.
But in comparing the two it's like comparing Chess to Checkers, same basic principle but totally different games

Chuck is a LHW not hw
Title fights are five 5 minute rounds
What a whopping 3 rounds.Boxers used to 15 rounds until 1984 when Ray boom boom Mancini killed Duk Koo Kim after a vicious right hand to the chin he later went into a coma and died.Ive never scene or hered someone dying in MMA.3 five minute rounds is 15 minutes. 12,3 minute round is well over double that fifteen rounder where three times that. You cant compare
boxing and MMA. Boxers are clearly more well conditioned and by far way more superior as strikers with there hand. MMA is clearly more superior with the ground game and the martial arts.I just happen to preferr boxing. I know guys who do MMA and I cant stand a single one of them from
there crappy attitudes to there terrible tribal tattoos.
So its not about a fighters athleticism or skills....your arguments have denigrated to ragging on a whole group of atheletes b/c of their tattoos and percieved attitudes? There is a word for intolerant people who make broad sweepping generalizations and stereotypes....bigot
So once again your are going to make a stereotype about a sport based on a television show with 16 fighters on it? You could make the same arguments about boxers. There is no shortage of boxers in the news due to drug and legal issues. Just b/c Contender glosses over life with its over production doesn't mean boxing as a sport doesn't have the same warts that humanity has in general. Your opinion about MMA fighters skills is pretty much w/o merit. You obviously make no attempt to be objective about it, and have never trained in it . Your geographic location doesn't absolve you from sounding like a bigot either.

Re: Media mainstream sportscenter starts show with mma vs boxing debate
I love boxing, and I am a fan of MMA. I don't like what the UFC is doing though. I understand Dana White is a business man, and trying to make money, but he sounds like Vince McMahon. Sure boxing has had some shady decisions, but so has the UFC. Any fighter that doesn't have a big contract, and has a close fight with a fighter that does, get's shafted. That way ratings stay high because of the big names. and Dana doesn't have to pay another big contract. Now he sounds like Don King lol. Can't see how he thinks the UFC is better than boxing under those circumstances, when they are just as corrupt, maybe more. Dana White is all about money, period. I take my hat off to him for the hype-machine they are creating, but the fact remains, people who like boxing will stick with boxing, and people who like the UFC, will stick with the UFC. And some of us will watch both. ;D
Hey, more power to the UFC for trying what they can. I'd definately rather watch the UFC than WWE, but boxing is not going away, sorry. Just my opinion.
I remeber Vince McMahon being asked how his wrestling empire compared to Ted Turner's, "That's wrastlin, we are Sports Entertainment", sounds kinda like Dana white.

I woudn't bother trying to explain it to him vanchilds I think he's just an idiot.
You have to laugh though if he thinks the Contender guys were more noble than the guys on UFC ::**
The Contender show was completely and utterly fake whilst the Ultimate Fighter is real life.
Anyone who knows boxing and follows the fighters knows that post Contender those guys have been talking all kinds of shit about each other. Ishe and Tarrick had a classy little war of words on boxingtalk with Tarrick calling Ishe a mental and saying he would beat him up if he saw him in the street and Ishe saying he'd kick Tarrick's ass. Ishe also called Jesse Brinkley a fag saying he should have been in Brokeback Mountain with his lover Manfredo and posted his sparring sessions with Manfredo all over the net.
Meanwhile the host Sly Stallone gets busted and charged for smuggling growth hormones.
All of that 'reality' is covered up though as they present their own 'reality' on the show.
The Ultimate Fighter show just records it all as it is.

No worries Van Man.. Me and you have been on Saddo's for about the same time.... And trying to educate people against there predjudices, Ignorance and falsehoods against MMA is futile.... MOst people who put down MMA dont know a gotdam thing about it and wind up looking like complete A-Holes to people who know the ins and outs of the sport. Entertainment value is always subjective and thats fine but, when people are just straight up idiotic and lacking real perception, I just dont waste my time anymore. If they want to sound like uneducated street urchins thats fine by me ;)
So you watch the lastest t.v series of this show and agree these guys fighting in the house provided by the owner of UFC are class acts.I'm sorry to so idiotic and so ignorant to say these perfect gentlemen are complete jerks.God send me to the fiery pits for having such a biased opinion on something that is so obvious.
Thanks for the :sadclick: I wont retaliate though ;) But who gives a flying fuk if they hump pigeons in the park during there freetime... What the hell does it have to do with their skill set and abiltiy to take a punch... Are you for real??? I'm covered in tats and train in MMA so when you offend the sport you are offending me.. Tell you what I dare you to tell Leban what you think of him and the sport he dedicates himself, trains and bleeds..
I'm sure he would do the same that I would.. See what your really made of and if you are even in a position to run your yap :-X
9x out of 10 the critics are nothing more than keyboard jockeys that think they know something because they saw it on TV or they know someone who trains, so it makes them a tough guy and an expert :beat:
Baby any day.. I will say what I think to any man.I'm not the biggest dude.6' 220. But well all bleed red baby.I boxed for 10 years. Kenmore boxing club and then goodshepards gym on Howard street. My father was a small time ham and egger pro welter weight .He wasnt the greatest pro. He only had 19 fights. He was 11-7-1.But he is besides the point. I gave an opinion you are the one talking in a tone that seems like wrath like .If Leban was here I would tell him what how he can be a little more classy and less trashy.I guarantee he would have a tough time taking me on my feet.I swat harder than he dose. I guarantee you that. He would probablly have to take me down and work his game and choke me out.I was a amateur from 8 years till I was 18.I won a silver glove at 120. I have knocked kids out with headgear on. My son is 5 years old and is going to the gym allready. So don't put down what you don't know or understand. Because I know and understand MMA guys. My cousin dose it and my wife's ex boyfriend dose it. And if you ask me they are both a complete waste of Oxygen. Then I see what these so called men do on T.v .Of all places the home that is provided to them by the owner of the company. The best education I got was on the streets. Hopefully you never had to fight your way in and out of neighborhoods in Connecticut. In urban Akron's dirty south side you do. I used to carry a cue ball stuffed in a sock for protection when I was 12.You have to do what you have to do.I still live in Akron but in a different area but still in the south side non the less. I have been slashed with a knife shot at, jumped, I have even had a dog sicked on me during a street fight. So don't tell me what for.Im sure you are a decent man an hopefully you can understand where Im coming from.True....I had 3 best freinds growing up.1 is still alive.Alan deceded to taste test a buck shot and Marcus was murdered in his sleep by his neighboor for drug money.I hate my past.I don't ever want that for my child or even yours if you have any its not fun. I do not wish that upon any man if I agree with him or not.

Yawn
Ive tried repeatedly to watch, and gave it yet one more chance last night
Bigger yawn
If you like it,enjoy
But the odds of that side show overtaking a legitimate sport are slim and nill
And slim just left town
It isnt going to be overtaking the WWE any time soon, for that matter

hehe how little you know. It's already bigger than WWE. It takes more per year in PPV revenue than boxing already as well so shows what you know.
It will continue to grow. Boxing is still the greatest sport for now, but if they don't sort out their failings and transform the sport into how it should be it will definitely be second fiddle to MMA within another decade.

Re: Media mainstream sportscenter starts show with mma vs boxing debate
Actually that was total for MMA
Not just UFC,but all of the above
To get a proper total for wrestling, youd have to add in TNA,ECW,etc, etc
Shows what you know,I guess
As far as boxing, how many good PPV's have there been?
Oh yeah,my wife works for Dish Network
They have to put on extra staff when two Mexican fighters are on a PPV
Yet somehow they havent ever had to do that for a UFC event
Again,shows what you know

Re: Media mainstream sportscenter starts show with mma vs boxing debate
Boxing has survived a long time for a reason....it's good, let's not forget boxing is one of the oldest sports ever.
Things need to be fixed in boxing but hell UFC ain't big enough to have problems yet, enjoy your moment in the sun but you need to keep hard at work to not get burned up while you're there.
Boxing needs 1 champion per divison and it needs better fights
UFC much like "The X-Games" is not even on the same level...sure they are competitive sports but fucking hell....I think I'll lock myself in a room and create a game.....oooh Basketball on Rollerblades! It's coming and it'll take over the NBA!!!!!
If Boxing can survive Kung Fu, Wrestling, and Roller Derby then it'll have no problem with UFC

Re: Media mainstream sportscenter starts show with mma vs boxing debate
In boxing's defense, the UFC had 4 more PPV's in 2006 then HBO did. And 2 more then WWE. So all of the PPVs got around the same number of viewers. UFC got 220 mil on 14 shows, while HBO PPV got 176 million on 10 shows. I'm not going to do the math but in my head I think that's an average of 16 million for both.

Re: Media mainstream sportscenter starts show with mma vs boxing debate
And to add to that
American Idol is incredibly popular
But somehow Id rather watch a musician who has a clue what theyre doing instead

Re: Media mainstream sportscenter starts show with mma vs boxing debate
I think it's idiotic how both Rogan and Dibella feel the need to prove one sport is better than the other, or moreso, why people here try to do the same thing. Fight fans can like boxing, or MMA, or both. I like both. I don't think it's really even competitive, but they really complement each other. Like for instance in recent years where there would be a long stretch we'd have to wait between blockbuster boxing ppvs, UFC now in a way fills in the blanks, (Liddell-Jackson coming in between DLH-Mayweather and Judah-Cotto). And for those who bash UFC, they at least have their most dominant fighter also happening to be their most exciting fighter (Liddell), and as Brian Kenny pointed out yesterday, boxing hasn't had that since Tyson in the 80s.
