Re: Whats all the hype about calzaghe????
When Calzaghe beats kessler as he most likely will......will these haters man up?
There is no hype about Calzaghe because he is proven. He is the best in his division and has been for a bloody long time..

Some of you keep disecting his post and talking about whether or not he held the IBF belt... yeah I'm looking at you bzkfn, or whether or not he is the longest reigning champion in history. But all that crap don't matter.
Yes he is a very skilled boxer but the fact is that this is in fact hist first real test. For a fighter to be over 35 and been a champion for 10 years to meet his first test now is just plain ridiculous. Yes higned sight is 20/20. That means it is better than foresight. That means before, we didn't know but now we know. Jeff Lacy is and was a bumb.
Yeah...Rookie Fan. Appropriate name.
You obviously are unfamiliar with the names that Calzaghe beat & who & what they were when Joe beat them.
Names like Viet, Mkrtchian, Jimenez, Sheika, Reid, or Eubanks were'nt walk overs & when Calzaghe dismantled them they were legit opposition. You can plow through any champion's record & pull out names of fighters that were meager opposition. Be that as it may Joe defended his title on his own turf like many other fighters do...the difference is that when someone is ragging on Joe that's one of the main arguements...but if they trying to defend other fighters...that's alright for them...but not Joe.
Joe has been tested many times over the last 10 years & to say Lacy was a bum just further proves that you either don't know what your'e talking about or your'e just trying to tear into Calzaghe.
Just because Joe blew through everyone he's faced doesn't make them bums.
You need to recognize that...the both of you.
Did you know Wacko that Jimenez went distance with Nigel Benn, Roberto Duran, Chris Eubank, and he even knocked down Roberto Duran plus Calzaghe was the first man to stop him ??
Nah babe...I think that you're talkin about Ferreyra...not Jimenez. Juan Carlos Gimenez Ferreyra are two different fighters. Ferreyra is the man that faced all those guys.
Ahh my bad i misread what you said nvm thanks for correcting me anyway.

:coolclick: Very well stated.
Even if he were to lose to Kessler...which I doubt...but even if he were...he's done everything that he's said & he's done it in a damned fine style.

Calzaghe gets a rough deal. He really does. And it is a shame because he really is such a great boxer to watch. Seldom a dull moment.

Re: Whats all the hype about calzaghe????
I wasn't really trying to be corrective...but those two are good examples of people misreading the opposition.
The Gimenez (Ferreyra) you are talking about went to battle with Benn, Eubank, & but Joe was the only one to stop him up to that point. I think that he's been stopped since though...technically his corner stopped the bout against Joe...but it's still a stoppage. If I aint mistaken that cat's still fighting & he's in his late 40's I think. He was a tough fighter in his heyday!
The Jimenez I am talking about fought tooth & nail & stopped Mercado. The same Mercado who fought Hopkins to a standstill, dropped him a few times, & drew with him. In the rematch he then got blasted out by Bernard, who back in the days was a knockout artist...you could go on to say that Hopkins ruined him & sweetened him up for Jimenez...but either way Mercado still had shades of his prior rawness & Jimenez wasted him inside 5 rounds. It took Hopkins something like 7 or 8.
Puts the opposition into perspective. I have that fight on disc & was just impressed with how Joe worked him down the stretch. You have to really watch Joe when he fights...& I mean really pay attention to what he does & how he does. He's a pretty good finisher too.

Re: Whats all the hype about calzaghe????
WOW. I step out to lunch and 20+ posts have been made. Take it easy on the rookie guys >:mad
Ok Maybe bumb was to harsh of a word. Lets just say Lacy was far from top tier and more than a little green at the time.
Eubank was well passed it.
Bika, Salem.....who?
Robin Ried might be the only one that qualifies and he didn't do that well did he.
I like to point something out. My post was more a show of support to a new member that was getting bombarded. I always put a lot of stock on long reigning champions and give Joe all respect for defending his title so successfully for so long.
But I stand by what I said. He has yet to fight a true threat to his throne till now. I'm going to settle this with two simple questions.
1) What has Mikkel Kessler done to be considered a world class fighter?
2) Is Mikkel Kessler the biggest challange in Joe Calzaghe's career?

He does indeed get the short end of the stick. I've never understood it.
You hit the nail on the head...he is exciting. All of his fights have something explosive in them. I loved the fight against...I think it was either Ashira or Salem...I can't remember which one it was...I'd have to hit the tapes to nail it shut...but it was one of the fights were he fwocked his hand up & kept on fighting to keep his title.
You could actually hear his hand crack when he wacked the guy. It was early in the fight...maybe the 3rd or 4th round & he went the full distance. Everytime he used his hand you could see him draw back in pain.
It got dirty as hell. Both men were using their elbows & heads & it was a gutty battle. The gent knew Calzaghe's hand was fwocked & I guess he thought he was going to take the title. Joe just boxed his ass off to keep the win & the strap.
It was a really really gutty showing for Calzaghe.
Same thing goes for the Mitchell fight. Joe got dropped & then jumps up & stops the guy almost immediately.
Shit like that does it for me.

I have Joes career set Wacko i just misread his name.
As for Mercado i never thought he was that much yes he dropped a green Hopkins twice but in the rematch he was blasted out then after the fight with Hopkins he fought 8 times and only won once so i never thought he was that much to be honest Wacko so Jimenez stopping him in 5 doesn't impress me that much and Jimenez himself wasn't that much because after the Calzaghe fight i remember seeing his fight with Brian Magee and he was totally outboxed and lost lopsided decision.

Reid also held a belt prior to fighting Joe & had defended it a few times prior to facing Joe. The fight he lost was a step up to get to Joe. He lost it. Can't recall who it was against.
Shit happens.

1: Kessler has beaten top opposition & has the other 2 belts. He is the #1 ranked contender.
That's an easy answer to a question that I am shocked you asked.
2: Not the biggest...but he's stiff opposition. Eubank, Lacy, Gimenez, & many other fighters in their times were pretty big tests.
He rates the biggest chance due to his youth & power.

I see where you are coming from...but prior to the Calzaghe loss Jimenez was either a 4th or 5th ranked contender @ 168lbs & I think he had 1 or 2 losses on his record. I hate to play guess work here with no tape in front of me, but he was a fighter coming up that Joe handled fairly well as he did most of his opposition.
Everyone acts like he faced a bunch of fall guys & that's just not the case.

I totally disagree no one had even heard of Bika before Calzaghe fight and Salem had no wins against top opposition he lost to Veit, Echols, Salem was never that good even prospect Bute done away with Salem in 8.
Reid was a hot and cold fighter he didn't look impressive getting outboxed by 42 year old Sugar Boy Malinga before Calzaghe fight and i never thought Reid was World Class anyway i always thought he was a step below world class.

Re: Whats all the hype about calzaghe????
Calzaghe like it or not is an underachiever and has been under Warrens protection for years. Unless you really pull his tits he wont step up. I mean look at the Lacy fight for instance, and Fwock all you that say Lacy was garbage, jeff was slow, lethargic and flat from the get go. Not saying Clazaghe wouldnt have won but any real Lacy supporter could see he wasnt right from the opening bell.
My point is that Jeff was the Juggernaut of the division he beat anyone in the division he ducked no one nor did he cleverly pick his fights, as a matter a fact during the negoiatians for the Hopkins VS Taylor 1 fight when Taylors people were dragging their feet Jeff offered to step in at a catch weight just to fight!!!!! So Lacy's credentials were their but Calzaghe dragged his feet and was more than happy to take on BS people until he and Warren couldnt dance around it any further. Then when he domianted Lacy and EVERYONE thought he would come out of his shell and finally do the superfights he should be doing and take on Kessler. Calzaghe follows that spectacular win up with of all people SAKIO BIKA!!!!!!!! the guy fighting on the contender ::** Then while Kessler is clearly worthy and the biggest threat to him skill wise Joe has an opportunity to Tie Hopkins record with a superfight with Kessler and take a risk to legitimize, what does he do??? He decides to Champion mediocrity and for his potential record tieing performance he tries to convince us that Retarded Petey Manfredo is the banner fight to do it. They go on a press tour and he campaigns this fight as worthy and viable and bona fied.
You know what, that is Calzaghe career in a vacuum not man enough to take the risk unless someone holds a gun to his head and now that palles and the public have twisted Calzaghe's tits till their blue he can not run from Kessler any longer since he is a Puss in the court of public opinion ::**
Joe has golden talent and ability but it all means nothing since he has a paper heart. Congrats Sven Ottke Joe Calzaghe hope you are remembered the way you want to be ;)

Re: Whats all the hype about calzaghe????
Even though Calzaghe's era has been weak there was no one really else to beat in his division he has beaten everyone over the last 10 years the only name he could of fought was Ottke who wanted nothing to do with Calzaghe so people have to take that into account.

That's where you are wrong. You can't say "no one had even heard of Bika before Calzaghe fight" just because you hadn't or didn't think he was a big enough name. That's been a blanket statement of Calzaghe's detractors & it's just wrong...no offense...it's silly.
Salem had held the NABO, NABF, IBF, or NBA or one of those belts obscure inter-dimensional ;D titles & was a contender for one of the big belts at the time...trust me babe...he was ranked somewhere...I'll bust out tape at the house & see if I can find it.
The fact remains that in their time & the time that Calzaghe dispatched them they were something & they had held titles, were ranked, & were fighting for straps. Viet & Echols were somebody's also. They produced some good scraps & were all ranked.
I hate to split hairs like this but the facts are that they were all contenders & game opposition when Joe battered them.

Why am I wrong? tell me where I am wrong, this all happened, tell me where I did not base my opinion on fact... Calzaghe is a lovem or hatem fighter. some thinks he is Superman others think he is mediocre at best. I think he is mediocre and ordinary. Thats my opinion based on the TRUE events that have unfolded before mine and the worlds eyes.

:coolclick: Good point. Joe did face everyone in his division & it's not his fault that it was a weak era. Eubank has some interesting things to say about Joe & they are generally positive & in his favor. Agreed & I can't believe that I actually forgot to mention that.
Ottke was mortified of Joe...that aint subjective or biased either...he knew he had to keep his record & he knew that Joe was gunning for him.

Good points miles...& yes JT is wrong...but his favorite fighter is Lacy...so you can't blame him for being upset. I know that I was when Joe just utterly destroyed him...but if I aint mistaken...I tried to ease everyone the idea that that was a HUGE possibility. ;D

2: Not the biggest...but he's stiff opposition. Eubank, Lacy, Gimenez, & many other fighters in their times were pretty big tests.
He rates the biggest chance due to his youth & power.
Bika, Salem, & Reid were all ranked contenders & were available for Joe to face at that time.
Reid also held a belt prior to fighting Joe & had defended it a few times prior to facing Joe. The fight he lost was a step up to get to Joe. He lost it. Can't recall who it was against.
S*** happens.

Wacko it wasn't just me i remember i was the first one the post up the news he was fighting Bika and everyone on this forum was saying Bika who ?? i wish i could find the thread so i can show you what i mean im not a Calzaghe hater im just telling you what i think.

He was mediocre all he was good at was being dirty fighter and he had quite a bit of power but thats it he was never any good Wacko.

I totally agree with this Wacko let me copy and paste what i said just a minute ago.
Even though Calzaghe's era has been weak there was no one really else to beat in his division he has beaten everyone over the last 10 years the only name he could of fought was Ottke who wanted nothing to do with Calzaghe so people have to take that into account.

Re: Whats all the hype about calzaghe????
JT,whilst your first post made some very very valid points,to say he is ordinary is a really silly statement. Honestly. An ordinary fighter would not have been champion for so long. An ordinary fighter would not have dismantled the number 1 challenger,a man viewed as heir apparent and a favourite to win the fight(and your fave fighter?). Joe decimated him,no one can deny Calzaghe's skills. If he was so mediocre,he would not have been champ for so long, nor would he have wrecked Lacy.
Seriously,if he beats Mikkel,I don't want to hear this over rated bs anymore!

You are only kidding yourself here.
1) Yes Kessler has faced some top contenders and has two belts and is universally recognized as the #1 contender..... All in the same weak a$$ division.
2) Kessler is the biggest test in his career, there is no doubt about that. He is young, has power, is undefeated and, unlike Lacy, is experienced and an established unified champion.

Good points miles...& yes JT is wrong...but his favorite fighter is Lacy...so you can't blame him for being upset. I know that I was when Joe just utterly destroyed him...but if I aint mistaken...I tried to ease everyone the idea that that was a HUGE possibility. ;D

Ok Maybe bumb was to harsh of a word. Lets just say Lacy was far from top tier and more than a little green at the time.
Eubank was well passed it.
Bika, Salem.....who?
Robin Ried might be the only one that qualifies and he didn't do that well did he.
Bika, Salem, & Reid were all ranked contenders & were available for Joe to face at that time.

Nothing wrong with supporting a member...but by his own admission he stated that he worded his post rather harshly or wrong.
If you stop to think about it...he got replied to immediately & forcefully because he was ripping into many fans favorite fighters.
You have to expect responses that you are not going to like when you do that.

I'm not saying your'e a hater & I aint directin this @ you 100%. I'm saying that Calzaghe's detractor's try to break down his opposition & they don't really check into the opposition or what they were when Joe beat them.
I didn't call you a hater either. When we are discussing things let's get clear that when I say YOU...I should say most people. When we are haggling over details...don't think that I am sitting here getting pissed off or bitter & trying to one up you in a discussion. I am just discussing. I'm not meaning that you are a hater in general nor am I attacking you...I'm just discussing the matter at hand.

Re: Whats all the hype about calzaghe????
:coolclick: back Wacko this is how i see it you can only beat the man infront of you Calzaghe has never ducked anyone and has beaten all the challengers that needed beating its shame Calzaghe wasn't in the era of Eubank, Benn, Collins, Watson, and Calzaghe himself has said he wished he could of been in that era i know i do slate Calzaghe sometimes but i have never said he hasn't beaten the best in his division even if it has been weak era its not his fault he can't help it i also think Calzaghe is very talented fighter and is exciting to watch i know i have picked Kessler to win but it would be nice for Calzaghe to finally get respect and a win over Kessler will do that all i can say is good luck to both Calzaghe and Kessler.

I know what you mean when you say it by the things you have posted in the past...by mediocre you pretty much mean shit. ;D
Just remember that that mediocre fighter totally tore through one of OUR favorites when he destroyed Lacy.
Put things into perspective now, my son. Heh heh heh.
I had to live with the loss too. It's time you wash off that hate with a big ole' bar of Welsh soap & let it go. ;D

Sorry that was over the top and I couldnt convey my points properly... Joe isint ordinary he is an underachiever someone who is content with mediocre accomploshments and that is the source of frustration, you have to put a revolver in his mouth to get him to step up. the last few years are indicitive of that FACT... If Joe just sucked and was overachieving and on a good run Like Baldomir was, and then when we compared his performances in relation to skill I wouldnt fault Joe one bit since he exceeded talent and expectaion but its not the case is it???. Talent like Joes should be held to a higher standard and ambition level.

Re: Whats all the hype about calzaghe????
Kessler has beaten some good names.
Librado Andrade
Markus Beyer
Eric Lucas
Manny Siaca
Anthony Mundine
Not a bad list of opposition.

Agreed Ice.
Who else can he face...other than moving up & fighting Hopkins.
He made offers to both Hopkins & Jones jr when there shouldn't have been a shot on the table to RJJ & Jones balked at it...& that was when Jones was down & out.
I imagine that if he beats Kessler, the Hopkins fight happens.
He made an offer to Taylor...Taylor balked at a career highest amount. I'll bet Taylor ends up wanting it after his last fight.

Read my last post in reference to Baldomir and I think that is the best comparison I can come up with in terms of how you maximize your talent that is bestowed upon you
Plus you disagree that both Gary Shaw and Morges Palle had to titty twist and give up their 1st born to get a fight with Warren and Calzaghe?
I can see if he was putting them off to fight better fights but at the time he wasnt

He made an offer to Taylor...Taylor balked at a career highest amount. I'll bet Taylor ends up wanting it after his last fight.
I don't want to sound nasty here Wacko but i think some Americans don't think much of Calzaghe's opposition because they are mostly European and they don't know much about the history of the opposition who they have fought what they have achieved ect i hope that didn't come out the wrong way i hope you understand what im trying to say.

Joe decimated him,no one can deny Calzaghe's skills. If he was so mediocre,he would not have been champ for so long, nor would he have wrecked Lacy.
Seriously,if he beats Mikkel,I don't want to hear this over rated bs anymore!
The problem is JT is that there was no one else for Calzaghe to fight he has beaten everyone there was to beat.
Agreed Ice.
Who else can he face...other than moving up & fighting Hopkins.

That's an easy answer to a question that I am shocked you asked.
2: Not the biggest...but he's stiff opposition. Eubank, Lacy, Gimenez, & many other fighters in their times were pretty big tests.
He rates the biggest chance due to his youth & power.
You are only kidding yourself here.
1) Yes Kessler has faced some top contenders and has two belts and is universally recognized as the #1 contender..... All in the same weak a$$ division.
2) Kessler
is the biggest test in his career, there is no doubt about that. He is young, has power, is undefeated and, unlike Lacy, is experienced and an established unified champion.
Rookiefan,I have to disagree with you here bro. Between them, they have all the titles and beaten most of the top opponents. You can't ask for much more than that man!
What exactly are you disagreen with me about?
I think some people are misunderstanding me.
I am not questioning that both Kessler and Calzaghe are great fighters.
I am not saying that Calzaghe has ducked anybody.
I am not implying that Calzaghe is not exciting or good for the sport.
I am questioning one thing and one thing only: quality of opposition.
The OP made a good point and out came bzknf (did I get that right?), wacko, miles, and all the rest to the rescue and talking like he had just insulted your mother(disclamer for the slow ones, that was a joke). Just the size of this thread is enough to indicate that there is some serious insecurity on how some people feel about Joe.
Nothing of what any of you have said has changed my mind that Kessler, despite not having done anything of any remarcable importance or having established himself as an elite fighter, is in fact Calzaghe's greatest threat so far.

Agreed and if Kessler is his greatest test so far then who the hell has he been fighting for the last ten years. This is why I started this post to begin with. Im sick of hearing about his title defences, he's full of shit

Name me one fighter he could have fought at Supermiddleweight that were any better than the opposition he has faced ??

Re: Whats all the hype about calzaghe????
Most made real good points on this thread, but we seem to always boil over on Calzaghe because he is a lovem or hatem type fighter and when there seems to be no middle ground I always concede to agree to disagree with everyone. We may be at each others throats on this topic but wmen we click the new response to your post link we could wholeheartedly be agreeing. Thats the beauty of it all.
:coolclick: to all for a healthy hearty debate

OK magyar, you are going a little over the top here and your making me look bad by defending you. Take it easy bro. Calzaghe is, despite what I have said and how I feel, a great fighter.
