Setoguchi has been one of the few bright spots these playoffs I think he is coming into his own. Same with Pavelski aside from Game 2 this series. Ehrhoff, Rivet and Murray have left much to be desired so I wouldn't mind them trying to sure up the defense. That's pretty much the hump right now. The Sharks are deadly when they aren't backed up in their own zone and that's where they have been most of these 10 games in the playoffs.
It seems like with all their talent, for whatever reason, that they are very fragile mentally. From what I've seen they do very well when they have the lead, but once they fall behind they seem to collapse mentally. I think a big part of that is Wilson (who I do not like at all), but I think they could use a bit of a personal shake-up. Maybe they're all to comfortable, seeing one or two veteran players shipped out could be just what the team needs. It would instill a bit of desperation. They really remind me of the old Canucks (except the Sharks have much better goaltending) in that they have all the talent they need, but they are somehow lacking something.
Well then Marleau and Thornton would be the two that would produce that kind of shake up and Thornton has really been a ghost this series. But Thornton is just to integral a part of this team to give away.
I think some help on the defensive end is what they need because when you get to playing in the playoffs facing the same team day in and day out, you need at least someone who is going to be physical and wear a team down. And also to kill penalties because the Sharks penalty kill has been their achiles heel. Right now Grier is probably the most physical guy we have.

Re: Any other NHL fans on the site?
Sean Avery of the Rangers just either had a heart attack or a lacerated spleen this morning. There are conflicting news reports. One says he was unconscious, not breathing and in cardiac arrest. Though Avery's spokeman said it was just a lacerated spleen that sent him to the emergency room. He is 28 years old. It sounds serious either way...
I hope he is alright. I have watched him and the Rangers play the Pens for 3 games. There was a game last night and one of the announcers commented on how he didn't look like himself. It's strange to think how during the game he must have felt something was wrong with him but kept playing despite it.
Then hours later he is in the emergency room.
Good news is that all the reports I have seen say he is expected to make a full recovery.

I just heard on the radio that it was a lacerated spleen, but a New York paper was reporting that he was in cardiac arrest. Apparently he's expected to make a full recovery, but he's out for the rest of the playoffs.

Re: Any other NHL fans on the site?
OT in the SJ - Dallas series.
Dallas deserves to win this game, the officials screwed them out of at least 1 goal.
-
Re: Any other NHL fans on the site?
Well I'm relegated to the radio but sounds like San Jose has been the better team this series and in game 3 the Sharks got a goal whistled off because the referee lost sight of the puck so I really don't care about Dallas. Fuck Dallas
-
Re: Any other NHL fans on the site?
YEAH! Fuck yeah  Hopefully the Sharks have found their gear, they are certainly good enough to beat Dallas a couple more times.
-
Re: Any other NHL fans on the site?
I picked the Sharks to go all the way at the beginning of the play-offs (I think), but Dallas just got robbed.

For these playoffs I haven't shaved and am growing the first beard in my life. Well it's less a beard and more a goatee and I shave the mustache part. But whatever.

My beard is the only reason I don't look like I'm 15.

I would love to have a big middle east beard or like a Baron Davis beard I imagine that is about as different of a life as one could possibly have. No matter what, a beard like that gets judged. I think that would be hilarious and would love to live one day and go buy beer or something. Get insulted when I get carded, I bet I can pull that off.
Hate to drag basketball into this but it's about the beard. Baron Davis has the best beard of all time because it is always the exact same length of the hair on his head. Always and it's not entirely apparent in this picture nor is it clear but whatever. But the best basketball beard ever has to be Ilgauskus, Big Z, can't spell his first name. Zildrounis, that's a guess.

Could you imagine having that every day? That would be amazing, I would look like a 50 year old science teacher.

By the time you get to my age (26), being carded is a compliment.

I always wanted to grow a really long beard and braid it viking-style. Layne Staley from Alice in Chains had a great one at one point.

In California my dad still gets carded, they are very strict about it here and most shop managers are paranoid about the massive fines that it's sort of a trained thing. Unless you get to know a corner store that is.

Re: Any other NHL fans on the site?
I figure that I am the absolutely only person on this board who cares one bit about the World Championships that started on friday. North Americans don't usually care about international hockey, and brits and pinoys, well, doesnt care about hockey at all... Personally I always get a bit hyped up, and here in Finland it seems to be a _huge_ deal.
And since Jannik Hansen has been mentioned in this thread before (by, ahem, me mostly), I'd just like to share a thing of absolute beauty from Friday's opening game between Denmark and Czech Republic:
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=STT36zwfDyo
One more trivia bit I expect CFH to like: The d-man that Hansen absolutely owns there is Kaberle of the Maple Leafs.
Denmark still lost 5-2, but that was a decent and reasonable result on our behalf. The big game for us is tonight, when we take on Italy. Winning this - and we should - and we'll stay in the top division, and we will be playing OG qualification on home ice too.

By virtue of the fact that Kaberle plays for the Leafs, he can go fuck himself. He's a pretty damn good defense man though. I'm loving the progress Hansen has made over the past few seasons, it's a shame he never got another chance to crack the 'Nucks line-up later in this season.
I can't believe this is the 1st time they've had the World Championships in Canada, it's almost entirely sold out. I've been following it somewhat since the Canucks didn't make the playoffs. Since all the Canadian teams are out of the post-season now, I expect that it will get a great deal more coverage. I love the WHC.
I am really hoping that somehow Boedker falls to #10 in the draft so the Canucks can pick him up, but it doesn't seem likely. Even if he does. knowing the Canuck's scouting, they'll pick some kid who's ranked #43rd overall or something instead.

I hate most of the other Canadian teams. The Habs are ok I guess and I gained a ton of respect for Iginla and the Flames at Trevor Lindens last game. I never cheer for the other Canadian teams once the 'Nuck are out, the Bruins and the Redwings are my 2nd favorite teams. If Mike Keenan wasn't behind the bench I would've been cheering for the Flames this year though. I'm sure I'll go back to hating them when the next season starts though. The Canucks fans even cheered for Iginla when he came out as the 2nd star :o. I never thought I'd see that.

What a hit by Morrow on Michalek.

Gotta root for Dallas in this one. Home town hero in the pipes.
That was a close one, huh?

Re: Any other NHL fans on the site?
What a save by Nabakov. Looks like his glove was over the line, but they can't rule that a goal.

Re: Any other NHL fans on the site?
What great goaltending... Shame the Wings are going to destroy whoever wins this series. :D
-
Re: Any other NHL fans on the site?
absolutely gutted. fuck fuck fuck. damn it what a heart breaker
-
Re: Any other NHL fans on the site?
Tough break amat. Nabakov was huge all night, unfortunately for the Sharks, so was Turco.
Brendan Morrow might be the most underrated player in the entire NHL.

Re: Any other NHL fans on the site?
You know I am very proud of the Sharks though, it's hard to be mad at a team after a game like that. They played well for the most part in the overtimes but Marty Turko is absolutely from a different planet. So was Nabakov. Great game certainly the best ever between the Stars and Sharks who have turned out a lot of great ones.
Hopefully the team isn't disbanded except for maybe Ron Wilson but I don't think they will be. Fucking sucks though but certainly the most memorable Sharks playoffs ever even though they went 7 and left with 6. Nabakov is an absolute animal though WOW.
Hope Michalek is OK, I wish he could have been on the ice for those overtimes. But great series it might as well have been 7 games because if the Sharks won tonight then the Stars were done imo.

I agree that the Stars had to win tonight or it was over for them. You probably don't agree ATM, but I'm really happy for Marty Turco. After years and years of people saying he couldn't get it done in the post season, he's finally proving them wrong. I was amazed at the amount of shit he took even after last years series against the Canucks. He was outstanding in that series too, only losing because R. Luongo gave arguably the best playoff performance I have ever seen. Turco deserved credit, he didn't get it, so I'm happy to see him prove his detractors wrong. I have to get props to Nabakov as well, what an outstanding game from him too, hopefully it doesn't get overshadowed by Turco's performance (like what happened to Turco last year). Nabakov should win the Vezina this year IMO.
I think the Sharks need some changes, nothing sweeping, but they definately need a shake-up. They gave a great effort and put up a brave fight, but losing in the 2nd round IMO is a massive underachievement from this team. It's easy to forget because of the last 3 games in the series, but they were down by 3 games right off the bat. In my eyes that is unacceptable with the talent they have. Why did they not play with te same sense of urgency in the 1st 3 games of the series as they did in the last three? That's the question I would have as a Sharks fan. Deep-sixing the coach and maybe shipping out a veteran player or two could be just what the Sharks need to get over the hump. That being said, as a Canucks fan I'd gladly trade my teams roster for yours; the Sharks are a great team and will continue to be for a good period of time. Despite this loss, and I'm sure it's a heart-breaker for a Sharks fan, they'll still be one of the elite teams and a favorite to win the cup come next Oct.
They showed Michalek on TSN between one of the OT periods, it looked like an arm/shoulder injury. Which is good in that it wasn't a head injury. That hit was clean, but it was brutal.
-
Re: Any other NHL fans on the site?
Yeah I could also see them bringing in a veteran or two like I said earlier they need some more defensive muscle if they want to last in the playoffs. Roenick I doubt will be back and I can't think of to many players I would like to part with. Maybe Campbell, I just don't think he fits in much he's a scoring defenseman but he's just not worked into the offense usually and especially in these playoffs. Would like some power on the defense really should they don't even have a penalty kill line that they can trust. Penalty kill was absolutely awful in the playoffs and is the biggest reason they are so inconsistent. That final 25 games where they went on that amazing run, they were the best team in the league at killing power plays. They get to the playoffs, they can't kill a penalty and stuggle both series. Would definitely like that sured up big time.

In the end, their lack of penalty-killing cost them the series. The final 25 games of the regular season showed that they can be decent at penalty-killing, they probably just need to add a few peices or maybe a new coach.

Denmark beat Italy 6-2 and saved themselves another year in the A group. Yay! Well done, boys.
(Worth mentioning: 1 goal from Hansen, Eller's first ever WHC point and 4 (!) points by Morten Green).

2 goals, 3 points, in two games. I really hope Hansen makes the team next year. Even if he can't score as well at the NHL level, he would be an excellent addition to the Kessler-Burrows checking line with his speed and size.

Re: Any other NHL fans on the site?
Sorry your team lost amat, but glad it was Marty and Dallas that put em out! Was a great series. And yea, I feel like Marty's got a raw deal for basically one bad playoff. Every eye is on him since expecting him to screw up, and if he lets in a goal they all kinda think..."Is it happening again?" When he is clearly one of the best goalies ever.
Next round and I am going for both Dallas and Pittsburg. love watching the young guns of Pittsburg play. Dynasty? Time will tell I suppose.

I wouldn't go that far, but he's a good goalie, undeserving of the bad reputation he's recieved.
I'll be cheering against Dallas when they play Detriot, but I want whoever wins that series to win the cup.
I also don't think that Pitts will become a dynasty in the traditional sense, too many limitations with the salary cap. They won't be able to keep all their young players for too long, but they're going to be damn good for the next little while.

Re: Any other NHL fans on the site?
Looks like the fairweather fan has prevailed
Just messing. But my Penguins are in the finals and tonight is a KEY game for them!
It's hard to believe they are being led by Crosby who I think is now only 20 still? He really stepped it up in game 3 and led them to that win and there can be no doubters of him, only dislikers ;)
I'm pretty excited about tonight's game. With 'sacry' Gary ROberts in and the team psyched it should be a great one to watch. It's funny; I still consider myself young but the Pens major stars are even younger than me. Im not sure if that youthful exuberance will be enough to beat the highly skilled and methodical Red Wings...they truly are a machine...but i'd like to hope so :D
Any of you guys still following it after your favorite teams got knocked off?
-
Re: Any other NHL fans on the site?
I didn't watch any of the conference finals but both those series were basically over before they started anyways.
Watched 2 of the Stanley Cup games 2 and 3 and will watch again tonight. Crosby is unbelievable and when Malkin plays his best that team is very scary. When Crosby was hurt earlier in the year I watched a couple Pens games and that was when Malkin was playing his best. Hopefully he can come up big tonight because I assume they are going to need him. I'm rooting for the Pens to make it a series.
