I also liked Guns N Roses cover of McCartney's 'Live and let Die', plus I thought their cover of Dylan's 'Knocking on Heaven's Door' was better than the original.
I'd agree with the posters that liked Hendrix' version of 'All Along the watchtower' more ....... but Dyan's greatest skill was as a fantastic lyricist and songwriter.
Just to twist the thread a bit .... I liked the Rolling Stones' 'Neptune Remix' cover of 'Sympathy for the Devil' more than the original.
Lol! ;D
Watch out X. Lyle could neg rep you for that too.

Re: What cover songs were better than the original versions?
Maybe ...... but we usually have some good arguments, always remaining on good terms (no matter how much we disagree about things, because we usually do) as we both think Joe Louis was the best heavyweight to ever step into the ring.
That's enough for me!

I'm sorry I don't care that Eric is a great muscian/guitarist and all but there is NO way on gods green earth that his version of "I shot the sheriff" is better then Nestas. :(

I Don't Wanna Grow Up - The Ramones (Tom Waits)
Helter Skelter - U2 (Beatles) - most will probably disagree, but I love U2's version.
Maggie's Farm - Rage Against the Machine (Dylan)
More to come...
Wrong about Billie Jean, Helter Skelter, and Landslide. Right about the others. ;)
More for the list:
Gram Parsons/Emmylou Harris - Love Hurts (best version, ever)
Johnny Cash - Cocaine Blues
More when they come to me.

Re: What cover songs were better than the original versions?
While the Emmylou harris./Parsons Love Hurts is very good. Nazareth version is quite good as well. I wouldn;t say its better, but I would say Emmylou Harris is probably my favourite female singers and one of the best rock out concerts you can go to.
-
Re: What cover songs were better than the original versions?
Collins was on point with All along the Watchtower(Hendrix version)

Yeah, the Nazareth version is good, but the Gram/Emmylou version is magic. Also, try finding a copy of Return of the Grievous Angel with Ryan Adams and Emmylou. That might be better than the version with Gram. I'll rep you after I spread some for knowing that version with Gram and Emmy.
I'm with Collins and JT on Watchtower. That belongs on any list of great covers or covers that equal or surpass the original.
-
Re: What cover songs were better than the original versions?
Hurt - Johnny cash over the NIN version
And Hendrix -All along the watchtower
Hendrix has already been said.. I concurr..
Cash may also have been ..Lol I havent seen it

Love the tune of his voice.

Personal preference, I guess, but the Gram/Emmy version has those harmonies and that tasty baseline. And it's not a metal power-ballad ;)

Re: What cover songs were better than the original versions?
I love Scorpion ballads. I don't think anybody revised any of their music.

I hate power-ballads, but Winds of Change was a great song.

I can tell you one I cant stand... They took the music of Sweet Home Alabama, and put some Fucktard words to it.... Sounded like Kid Rocks doing

Re: What cover songs were better than the original versions?
The Girl From Ipanema originally done by Pery Ribeiro. I think Joao, Gilberto & Getz did a much better job in the version they created.
RATM album "Renegades" is full of cover songs. I'm not saying they are all better then the originals but def. a well put album. Songs from Dylan, MC5, Cypress Hill, Rolling Stones & EPMD to name a few.

They have plenty of good songs!
And you shut the hell up about Van Halen!
What has Canada given us that is better than Van Halen?

Imo, RUSH is better than Van Halen.
-
Re: What cover songs were better than the original versions?
...Rush is totally different from Van Halen and Geddy Lee although a very good bass player is a singer that can get annoying.
Alex Van Halen is a very underrated drummer and IMO he could give Neal Pert a run for his money
-
Re: What cover songs were better than the original versions?
Yea dude, not a huge Van Halen fan, have alot of their music and need to be in the mood for them, but I think they are definetly are a Classic Rock and Roll band

Re: What cover songs were better than the original versions?
Lies by The Undead, covering the 60's Knickerbockers song

It doesn't matter what country they're from, they are a shitty, overrated band in my opinion. I can name several Canadian artists that are better than Halen. The Tragically Hip, Neil Young, The Guess Who/BTO, Gordon Lightfoot, Arcade Fire, The Band was primarily Canadian... I don't like Van Halen though, so it follows that I would think many Canadian groups are better than they are.
