Here's my top 10 Mexican fighters.
1. JCC
2. 'Finito' Lopez
3. Olivares
4. Sanchez
5. Roman
6. Erik
7. Canto
8. Saldivar
9. MAB
10. 'Chiquita' (Vastly overlooked in the All-Times lists)
Honors: JMM, Zaragoza, Zarate, Efren, Pintor, Medina, 'Santa Tokyo', 'Cobrita', Arce, Zurita, Kid Azteca, Rafa, Izzy, Herrera, Montiel, Mijares, Solis, Cazares, "Yaqui", Arizmendi, "Raton", Villasana.
*Depending how JMM, Mijares, Montiel, Rafa & Izzy close out their respective careers I think either one could potentially slip into the top 10.
So my post from above is from 2008...
Flash forward 4 years to 2012 and here's a quick list:
1. JCC
2. JMM
3. Finito Lopez
4. Olivares
5. Sanchez
6. Roman
7. Erik
8. MAB
9. Canto
10. Saldivar
Chiquita Gonzalez drops off the 10 spot to make room for JMM coming in at the #2 spot. Eventhough he's still active he has for my likings cemented his legacy in the sport and rightfully so. He has been in my books an elite boxer for years even after being written off as slow and old he continues to win. His longevity and his titles along with exceptional wins have boosted him up with the likes of JCC & Lopez.
Saldivar drops to #10 and MAB moves up behind Erik. As well as Canto drops to #9 above Saldivar.

Re: Who is the greatest Mexican fighter of all time?
JMM ahead of Morales and Barrera? Really.
-
Re: Who is the greatest Mexican fighter of all time?
No love for Zarate? C'mon people!
-
Re: Who is the greatest Mexican fighter of all time?
JCC but Sanchez was something special an awful pity he died so young.
-
Re: Who is the greatest Mexican fighter of all time?
Sanchez for me, i have no doubt he would've fought a trilogy with Nelson had he lived. I also believe that Azumah was the only man capable of beating him. Sanchez was just 23 when he died, not even at his peak. By 1985 he probably would've moved up to 130lbs and Julio Cesar Chavez might have received his first loss a lot sooner, Sanchez would also have run into Pernell Whitaker by the late 80's. Sanchez would not have turned 30 until 1989!
It boggles the mind as to what he could've achieved if not for this tragedy.

See below... (This comment was made back in 2008 and as I learn more about boxers my thoughts and opinions may change)

Not really sure where.
I just feel that his career at championship level aside from the Zamora unification bout (which a lot of people don't know it was) was a bit short compared to others with longevity. Tho his opposition is as good as it could be so there's a plus side...

Re: Who is the greatest Mexican fighter of all time?
Titofan is mad Trinidad is not on the list and calls this list a joke.

Re: Who is the greatest Mexican fighter of all time?
JMM for me is the greatest. Great technically, power , speed , longevity fight the young guys ( Bradley, Diaz , Katsidis, Alvarado) and KOd one of the biggest starts of the era. JMM #1 Mexican boxer ever.

Re: Who is the greatest Mexican fighter of all time?
Toss up between JMM and JCC IMO.
Would probably have been Salvador Sanchez had he not died so young.

I like to look at the record, wins and losses, length of career, undefeated streaks, and who he fought. You know what I'm talking about, that unimportant crap.

Good list, Mick. My top five would look like this:
1. Finito
2. Sanchez
3. Chavez
4. Barrera
5. Zarate
This list is not a mile off i have to say , Salvador was fantastic but the fact is he did die young , which gives the edge to Finito Lopez for me , but hey both were just wonderful fighters.
I agree with this guy , finito was the best.

Re: Who is the greatest Mexican fighter of all time?

Re: Who is the greatest Mexican fighter of all time?
I chose other.
If we're talking MExican heritage then I think Oscar De La Hoya.
If Mexican strictly then I favour Juan Manuel Marquez.
What happened to the poster "Finito El Dinamita"???? Is he still around?

Re: Who is the greatest Mexican fighter of all time?
There's no way a fella called Chalky Wright is Mexican. This will be the best thing i've ever seen if he's not black ;D

What you saying Jim! ;)
I was always under the impression he was Mexican, but it seems it may not be the case:
Chalky Wright - BoxRec
He was Mexican 'national' by 13 days perhaps...

Re: Who is the greatest Mexican fighter of all time?
What a great story. Brilliant.
Due to a an error in the old Ring Record Books which listed him as being born in Durango, Mexico, Chalky Wright has been erroneously listed as a Mexican boxer by various publications, up to the present date, when discussing him, or when discussions of all time Mexican fighters are made. Wright was not Mexican ethnically, nor was he born there.
His family were migrant farm workers
He was a chauffeur for movie star Mae West
Drowned in his bathtub
Trainer of Lightweight contender Tommy Campbell (1950)
2003: The Ring Magazine's 100 Greatest Punchers
This was posted by Alice Walker on the CBZ site: Chalky Wright was not a native of Mexico. He was born in Willcox, Arizona, February 1, 1912. He was born in the Territory of Mexico, now know as Arizona. Arizona became a state February 14, 1912. I am his second cousin. His Grandfather was a runaway slave from Natchez, Mississippi. The family name is Martin. He come from a family of Black cowboys who owned a ranch near Fort Grant. Him, his five sisters and brothers, his six cousins, mother, father, uncle and aunt all speak fluent Spanish and spoke it all the time. In the late 40 or early 50, I remember visiting his mother in Los Angeles a couple of times. He lived next door and was no longer fighting. I am currently researching my family's history and working on a project on Chalky for Black History Month
