Gomez wilts down to canvas...here comes the rain from Vitali
I tuned in at round 4 but Vitali has been breathing with his mouth open since then. Looks like he is going to finish this guy but he doesn't look very good.
Gomez is going down again soon
Gomez looking mentally beaten
Gomez wants out, looked like he thought about taking a knee ?? Vitali better get him out,he is huffing and puffing & trying to get him out big time.
Taking a point for WHAT...beating his arse ?? Gomez is all done
pretty sloppy performance...I was suprised he couldn't put him away sooner
About time. Gomez was game but, he was completely broken. He fought as best as he could, Vitali is just so freakin big and strong. Didnt think Vitali looked great though.
He better come in better shape and a lot more technically sound if he ends up fighting Haye
Vitali looked competent, but Gomez didn't have the tools to dismantle him and Klitschko was comfortable, and ought to have put him away earlier. At least gives Haye a plan b again if Wlad gets jelly-legs regarding the fight.
Over to RTE now for the Bernie Dunne bout.
Call me crazy but I think Wlad would have beat that version of Vitali.
Gomez did what he could, but his gameplan wasn't quite right, smothering his work and trying to hook over the arm of a guy that much taller were bad ideas.
Vitali looked to have very poor conditioning, he did what we all expected in the end, but not nearly the way at least I expected. I'm sure some of it was from Gomez bouncing around though.
Well Vitali did what was expected. It was an ugly fight but that can be blamed on Gomez, who bascally kept charging inside and than tieing up.
You cant fault Klitschko for the fight being a stinker because Gomez wasn't throwing and basically just wanted to clinch the whole time.
Vitali looked pretty good, nothing spectacular. Gomez did what he could early, but he wasn't in the best of shape and plus there's not much you can do against a giant. It was ok not as boring as I thought it would be.
Also, ESPN's coverage was horrible I hope there are no more big fights on ESPN. Stick with HBO or Showtime.
Agree I mean this was a HW title fight with the second best (Depending on who you ask) HW in the world....The last HW champion to have a live HW title fight on TV for free was Lennox Lewis on FOX network.....That was a long time ago.....(SHO/HBO do not count as free they are premimum chanels)...
I wish the trend would continue
Back about 5-10 years ago, when boxing was solely on Sky Tv in the UK, it was pretty dismal and hard to access for many people. When Sports Network and Calzaghe though went with ITV, a free-to-air broadcaster the profile just went through the roof. However, it seems to have retreated back to the subscription channels for the most part, so it may fade once more, unless Froch becomes as big a star as Calzaghe was, as he's the biggest on ITV at the moment.
More fights on free TV would make as big a difference to the sport in the US as it did a few years ago over here, and can only be a good thing.
What a fight. I really liked this one. It was an interesting fight because Gomez wasn't like all of Vitali's previous opponents. This guy, Gomez, had speed and heart.
There wasn't once where I thought VK was in trouble. He had patience and courage, didn't looked troubled at all. VK can take hits and today he showed this, like he showed it when he fought Lennox Lewis. Remind you, VK has NEVER been rocked by an opponent and today it didn't happen either.
The problem was his aerobic fitness. VK was tired after round 1. This was unusual considering he completely smashed Samuel Peter over the course of the match not so long ago. I was surprised and disappointed at this.
I think in the last couple of days, VK overworked himself. Days ago at the weigh-in, he looked great as well as the public training session. Today he looked tired!
JCG, what a fighter. I didn't expect VK to take this long but I knew it would be alot harder than Samuel Peter. I wish JCG had fought SP for the title, VK make a comeback and beat JCG for the Title, it would of made HW boxing more interesting today.
VK, despite using Chris Byrd (South) and Tony Thompson (South) as sparring partners, didn't seem to do very well in the first 2-3 rounds against this Southpaw.
I feel that problem is put down to VK finding it much more difficult to land that right-hand. If VK had landed those first few rights in the early rounds, the fight would of ended by round 5.
Nonetheless, a great and interesting fight. I admire JCG that little bit more but he never had a chance besides winning on a decision. I hope now he can keep his mouth a bit more placid.
VK deserved this and I hope continues to win the next 1-2 years he has left.
Where to from here? I want to see VK fight the Chagaev-Valuev winner to get both those fairies out of the game. VK shouldn't have to fight the 'finished' Maskaev because it would prove another one-sided-boring fight for VK. I want to see Wlad fight Haye in the very near future. I hope then the brothers can fight Povetkin and Arreola, who fights who doesn't bother me.
All the best to the great boxers, Vitali and Wladimir Klitschko.
P.S Natalia (Vitali's wife) looked hot tonight!!!
Miss the crazy Dierdorf;D.Daxx you had a great point a couple of weeks ago that put this one in perspective. As far as Stateside, when was the last time a major Heavyweight title fight aired on 'free' Tv,basic cable??I'm with all the above here...lets hope this is just the beginning.
its been a while i just got in, i the fight over?
i didnt see the fight but reading what you wrote it seemed to be a great fight,
im sure im not the only one who thinks the only real challange out there for vitali is wlad...........:p
I am all for Vitali, and second, Wlad.
Wlad would of punished today's Vitali, not the Vitali that fought Peter but today, oh man.
I doubt this will ever, ever happen though. I can see if they beat Haye, Povetkin, Arreola and those two fairies then I feel they may resort to an Exhibition match between each other but even that's unlikely.
Wlad vs Haye then Arreola.
Vitali vs Valuev-Chagaev winner then Povetkin.
That's how I want it anyway. After that, who is left that can be a challenge? Doesn't look like anyone right now.
I actually thought Gomez was going to pull it off...up until round 4.
The fight is a preview of the outcome of Wlad-Haye
Typical Vitali fight where he just wears down the opponent and clobbers him into submission. Why is it that the heavyweight fighters chose not to go to the body when they fight these 2 brothers? If there was one weakness that these 2 behemoths have is that they like to fight with their hands to their waist and nobody takes advantage of this. I hope David Haye does his homework and mixes up his arsenal when and if he fights Vlad instead of just headhunting. Someone should call Mike Mccallum or MAB for advise on going to the body in the heavies because it seems to be a forgotten art there.
Just another case of a big heavyweight beating a small heavyweight. Vitali didnt show us anything we didnt already know.
I didn't even get to watch the fight....damned LSU made the basketball game a bit closer than I had hoped.
Vitali and JCG used to spar with each other when they were both with Universum. I am glad that JCG gave a good account of himself and I am happy Vitali won (and by TKO too of course).
I think Vitali should fight these boxers: Valuev, Dimitrenko (he's the closest thing to Wladimir and he has the same trainer as Dimitrenko), and John Ruiz/Ruslan Chagaev....either one deserves a butt whuppin for just being a sissy
1st off buddy people have tried to go to the body on Wladimir and it hasn't worked, #2 Vitali would be damn near impossible to go to the body against as he keeps BOTH of his hands low and has the height to lean back and avoid getting hit in the head.
I am not used to fights being so early so I missed it....UNC basketball game was on ;)
Thats a different fight to the one I watched. I thought it was a proper bad fight tbh. Vitali looked a bit knackered and was just pawing out and Gomez was doing bugger all really. As soon as he felt Vitalis power he looked like he wanted out of there and was looking to go down I thought.
I think if you went to the body on the Klitchskos you would be asking for trouble, especially on Wlad because he has fast hands and when you go to the body you leave yourself open upstairs and they would make you pay. The body on the Klitchskos is pretty solid and would take a while to have an impact. Besides, one of the main reasons you go to the body is so the fighter brings their hands down......Both brothers fight with their left hand down already....
Let's not sell JCG short here...I mean I figured Vitali would handle him pretty easy on account of the fact he barely beat Oliver McCall. But if JCG could handle some of those right crosses (I'm assuming) then he's not all that bad....he has decent handspeed and although he's a small heavyweight he hung in there vs Vitali. He did what he had to do to keep in the fight for so long.
Let's not keep writing off heavyweights who lose to either Klitschko or any title holder. That is more what is wrong with the division than anything. It's like whoever loses is sent off into obscurity: Sam Peter, Calvin Brock, Sultan Ibragimov, Tony Thompson, Ray Austin...the list goes on, but those fighters are still very tough competition for everyone other than the title holders.
I see your points but I really think a good left to the liver might change the tide if someone knew how to throw it especially when they over extend with their right hands or when they swing wide with their left hooks the way Vitali did a few times tonight. I know it can be easier said then done because I'm not in there with them but I really think if a fighter with speed and power and could feint alot could have a really good night against these 2. Almost like a young Tyson was when he started out.
jon09, not only are the defenses of the two brothers pretty solid but they are both so athletic that it is hard to move and get an angle on them even after they miss a punch.
It's a good idea but it's extremely hard to do and there is no telling how well those guys take body shots....I've never ever seen them be bothered by them and they have definently been hit to the body before.
I think the best way to beat either brother is to stay in the pocket and keep them from tying up or pushing off. And you have to either have great defense or a hell of a chin yourself to withstand what they bring to the table.
