Re: Pacquiao - Clottey Fight Discussion
See the thing is, looking at Pacquiao's face, and how much damage Clottey was able to do to him tonight. It makes it all the more frustrating that he didn't push the fight more, it was a VERY winnable fight for him, and he could actually have used his size and jab and everything on Pacquiao, whenever he let his hands go he moved him. When Clottey looks back at the tape and back at his career he will realize he could have been undefeated and p4p maybe the top 3 in the world if he had just stepped on the gas, he will see how much of a waste it was. Hell he made Pacquiao miss 1000 times. How do you make someone miss a thousand punches and still lose?
That said, considering how often Pacquiao was hit with the straight left whenever he threw it and how roughed up he was on the inside when he decided to stay there. I have even more doubt that Pacquiao would beat Mayweather now. In fact, looking at the way Pacquiao performed tonight, Mayweather would have probably stopped him.
Even though once Floyd beats Shane it will build even more enthusiasm for a Pacquiao fight(though Roach seems to want it more then Pacquiao) from what I saw tonight, pacquiao would get the worst beating of his career against Floyd. If he can't avoid Clottey's straight right how the heck is he gonna stop Floyds?
Re: Pacquiao - Clottey Fight Discussion
All that fight did for me was to speculate what would happen if Manny and Floyd ever met in the ring.
Manny's defense is still suspect; Clottey tagged him a lot and seemed to hurt him a few times with some nice counters. On the other hand, does Floyd have the chin and heart to withstand Manny's power just in case Manny lands a few solid shots ? Manny is fast enough to land some heavy shots even against Floyd.

He did beat him in the score cards with no doubt but can't really say that Manny punished Clottey or gave him a beating, nope. At times he looked frustrated as he couldn't figure out Clottey's defense, even did a scissor double punch or whatever you call it.
A thumb up for Manny's punch output and stamina.
Must be a first for boxing at that level. Did it score two points :spongebob:?
What did Clottey earn for the night anyone know?
speaking of double punches, I think the undercard would have been a lot better where instead of the Castillo fight... I'd have rather seen him fight someone like Augustus or something. I mean Augustus had a great fight against Figueroa on HBO PPV before, I'm kinda shocked that they didn't or don't bring him back on these kinds of undercards. He'd be a great commodity to them and would get the crowd going before the main fight.
Anything would have been better then that crap of a undercard we saw tonight
Re: Pacquiao - Clottey Fight Discussion
What a shit fight, very annoyed at Clottey. Do you think Arum sweetened his purse on the condition he didn't fight back? Afterall a Pac loss would ruin any chance of a PBF mega fight..
Pac hit goves and elbows all night long, I can't remember one decent shot hitting him. Great defence by Clottey but pathetic output. He could have hurt Pac more if he just tried a little, I guess he just thought this was a nice pay day and didn't turn up to fight.
Clottey just stared at the laces of his gloves all night long!

"Do you think Arum sweetened his purse on the condition he didn't fight back?"
if that was the case then arum should have added a few more dollars to ensure a devastating mind blowing KO! that way pac can use that KO on the negotiation table against pbf. i mean if your going to make your prized fighter look good then go with the KO not just dont fight back.well clot and pbf both have very good tight defense. but clot didnt fought back, but what if he did? cotto fought back and was hurting pac but pac feeds off offensive fighters. cotto got tagged and backpedaled the rest of the fight.
Re: Pacquiao - Clottey Fight Discussion
btw pac learned that double scissor punch from a filipino action star... for real!
here is proof

Re: Pacquiao - Clottey Fight Discussion
Yes, indeed... it is called "pompiang". It was so funny, and as soon as I saw it I was reminded that it was the late FPJ's signature killer punch.

This is why a trainer like Dan Birmingham would have been great for Clottey, he would teach Clottey to stick that defense behind a solid consistant jab and combination to respond and counter over the top of Pacquiao's gloves when he threw. If Clottey responded everytime he made Pacquiao miss he could have won the fight.
Re: Pacquiao - Clottey Fight Discussion
You are deluding yourself if you think Clottey would win. He is one paced and conservative fighter by nature. He does not take chances and push himself out of his comfort zone.
Re: Pacquiao - Clottey Fight Discussion
The fight was shocking. Not for the outcome. I was shocked in the fact that i never knew Clottey had so much biitch in him. That shiit was a disgrace

his face mostly got messed up from headbutts...
Re: Pacquiao - Clottey Fight Discussion
I know I'm pretty late in chiming in here, but that has got to be one of the most frustratingly boring fights I've ever had the displeasure of seeing. No fault of Manny's. He threw all kinds of punches, and tried his damnest to make it a fight. But I swear... I will never pay a dime to watch Clottey fight again. That was truly DISGRACEFUL. Hey, Cotto got TKO'ed... but at least he went in there to fight. What the hell was Clottey thinking about??
Re: Pacquiao - Clottey Fight Discussion
Weird fight really, Clottey I don't think was going to get hurt he should of took more risks, but the fight went the way the majority thought it would.
If the Mayweather fight goes ahead I think Pac has a good shot with his workrate, but saying that Pac is not that hard to hit, I change my mind daily to which way it goes.
Re: Pacquiao - Clottey Fight Discussion
I think all the fights had the same 'problem' for want of a better word. I thought they were all good matchups but the old "styles make fights" thing seemed to be pervasive in all the fights. All the fights were enjoyable for me and I got something from them all but I can see how a lot wouldn't have felt it lived up to the hype. Thing is though they never do. I thought though all the guys who won were very good and certainly worth watching.

As do I :-\
I watch Floyd fight, I think he will loose.
I then watch Manny fight, I then think HE will loose.... :-\
Floyd is susceptible to Manny's extraordinary and unconventional leftyness. ( ;D )
Manny is so damn hittable when kept on a string.

LOL I have done the same thing...
I think Manny because he is so damn quick and he never stops not just with hands but his feet as well
I think Floyd because he always manages to time the other guys eventually and catch them at the right time
Re: Pacquiao - Clottey Fight Discussion
Just My opinion
If Clottey opens up more. He'll be more vulnerable to damaging shots and its more likely that he get stopped because Pac has the faster hands.
The boxing community thinks that Clottey shouldve took more risk and get kayoed.
Clottey on the other hand who was the one in there decided that its futile because of pac's faster combination. Again if he opens up more the bigger the chance he'll get stopped which what clottey believed given that he experienced how it is to be there in front of Pacquiao. And he didnt have one punch KO type of power anyway.

Which is why it was a boring fight, in fact in the first four rounds Pacquiao had thrown 397 punches, which was close to Clottey's 399 total for the whole fight. This was exactly what was expected by the majority of the boxing public though. So it's no surprise.

Re: Pacquiao - Clottey Fight Discussion
Yes the fight went the way everyone thought it would. This is why it was widely met with disapointment when it was announced because everyone knew it would be a boring fight with Clottey putting his hands up and Pac being too quick.
The only question was could Pac stop or drop Clottey and he couldnt do either so in that aspect it was a letdown but other than that it was entirely predictable. Anyways below is Joshuas statement
I can,t believe i get a very BAD day when i fought PACQUIAO maybe cos of the running stomach i get the day of the fight but anyway AM sorry my FANS please you guys should FORGIVE and FORGET next time GOD,ALLAH will give me goodday thanks
Re: Pacquiao - Clottey Fight Discussion
Any news on the PPV figures. I have read Arum expect 900,000 to a million, but then again it is Arum talking and seems to do more bs'ing than anything else. If this is the case though that would be HUGE. No 24/7, pretty much no build up at all. We will see I guess
Re: Pacquiao - Clottey Fight Discussion
Ya, I read before the fight Arum budgeted for 500-700K PPV Buys and a few days before the fight he had preliminary numbers and gave the 900k number and is hoping it would at least equal the Cotto fight. Since the fight has happened, I haven't read him saying anything. Even after Pac/Cotto he was surprisingly able to control his mouth unlike when Pac fought Hatton.
Re: Pacquiao - Clottey Fight Discussion
fight didn't need much advertising since Manny was on TV spots b4 the fight, and much of his support comes from Filipinos who were quite aware of the fight ;D. Those that couldn't join their kababayans in Texas watched it for sure.
there is ppv in Philippines 4 Pacman's fights, but those numbers, I presume, are not counted.
Filipinos have surely shown their buying power in boxing now.
I'd guess they did around 800- 850 K or so on ppv
