This is a long shot, anyone remember what fight did Larry Merchant say "Wake me up, if a fight ever breaks out?"
Was having a convo about funny comments from commentators.

If I had to guess, and I do not know the answer, it would be Shannon Briggs v Liakhovich as that fight was awful.

Maybe it was him because when Washington got caught chopping down a cherry tree he was too young and if you will allow mw the luxury of poetic justice, I think his old man was pissed.

Re: Boxing Trivia (What only Hardcore fans know)
How did this go from boxing trivia to u.s. presidential trivia?
I couldn't find which president did that but I also found a very nice quote from Abraham Lincoln:
GIVE ME SIX HOURS TO CHOP DOWN A TREE AND I WILL SPEND THE FIRST 4 HOURS SHARPENING THE AXE

Correct and they never fought.
Can you name the heavyweight fighter who shared the same trainer as Ali, Angelo Dundee, and did fight him?
Also which fighter did Dundee side with?

Re: Boxing Trivia (What only Hardcore fans know)
Jimmy Ellis? I think Dundee worked Ellis' corner ?

On March 27th, 1982 both Wilfredo Gomez and Jeff Chandler defended their titles via 6th round knockouts..... nothing special about that right? Not unless you know that BOTH fights officially ended at 2:28 of the round.
If the great Featherweight champion Sandy Saddler and Rocky Marciano where to fight, Saddler would have had a 2 inch reach advantage, 70 inches to Marciano's 68.
Oscar De La Hoya released his first album on EMI/Latin Records. It was named "Oscar" and was successful. The album topped Billboard's Latin Dance charts for several weeks and "Ven a Mi," a single from the album was nominated for a Grammy.
Everyone speaks of "The Thrilla in manilla" as one of the best Heavyweight fights of all-time because they were practically killing each other, going bk and forth in the scorching heat for 14 rounds . Suprisingly the scores at the time of the stoppage had Ali winning rather easily 166-160, 166-162, 167-162.
Roy Jones Jr. was the first person in compubox history to go an entire round without being hit against Vinny Pazienza.
Non Boxing Trivia
The average blue whale produces over 400 gallons of sperm when it ejaculates, but only 10% of that actually makes it into his mate. So 360 gallons are spilled into the ocean every-time he busts a nut, and ppl wonder why the ocean is so salty.
The percentage of Africa that is wilderness: 28%. The percentage of North America that is wilderness: 38%

That was the only fight where I saw Roy actually use his jab effectively. :)

Re: Boxing Trivia (What only Hardcore fans know)
Walker Smith is Ray Robinson. He was given that name on fight night and it took hold. Sugar was not his personal name, he was given it by the sports writers.
P4P was created as a means to express how great he was at potentially any weight.
One of the few who didnt have to invent a character.
Ali called himself the greatest. Tyson called himself the baddest man on the planet. Mayweather called himself TBE. But Ray Robinson was given the name Sugar and the accolades of being considered Pound for Pound the best!

Re: Boxing Trivia (What only Hardcore fans know)

Decent enough, loads of heart all things considered for sure. Saw this little piece on him a while ago. I never realized how self righteous Ferdie Pacheco was on him fighting. Really backwards thinking to me regarding guys 'risking injury'..the man adapted to carry on and it's certainly not an advantage.

Re: Boxing Trivia (What only Hardcore fans know)
James Toney should have counted for this, the obvious three weight classes for him of course, and the git did beat ruiz for the wba heavyweight title but failed a drugs test, which is only frowned upon when it's someone you like(or british:S)... He must have won some of the random minor heavyweight titles too.
-
Re: Boxing Trivia (What only Hardcore fans know)
I'd also guess that the Mexican greats, Barrera, Marquez and morales, must have won in four weight classes or at least very close to it, I'd have to look it up though.

The humble, but bad hombre & Master Technician It only takes "Juan" Mexican Marquez to beat Pacman!!! Feather up to Jr. Welter

...Fly up to Feather!!

Packey McFarland is considered one of the greats to never win a title, with one loss in his career.
However boxrec claims no losses
https://boxrec.com/en/proboxer/36384
Was he 70-1-5
or

Arce for sure, good vid, one who goes under the radar most often. Donaire too and I think Macho Camacho came up short at welter at the hand(s) of Trinidad.

Yeah, you're right. I don't know why I thought his 2nd fight with Duran was a title fight. Probably just remembered the announcer saying championship boxing, not for a championship.

I was going back through time and I noticed your mention of biters and I thought I should add Ossie Ocasio(Jaws}. It was a fun catch and reminder there's always more fun on the realm. He also fought Larry Holmes but his teeth was kept in check that evening on Wide World of sports.

How Demarcus Corley became "chop-chop"
Manny Stewart stated in the amateurs the poor kid would gobble his meal down causing instant weight gain, so Manny stated they had to tell him Marcus, chew your food. chop it up, then chew it!
If that's so, what a funny means about getting a nickname!

Yes Brendan Ingle once said to Jonny Nelson , think of something you will never be and chose it as your nickname.
Hence - Jonny "The Entertainer " Nelson.

Re: Boxing Trivia (What only Hardcore fans know)
Jackie Frazier played basketball before boxing and was One of AU’s top all-time scorer. Their first female basketball player to reach the 1,000-points and ranked 12th on AU’s all-time scoring list with 1,106 points.
She averaged 12.7 points per game in her career and registered 72 steals during the 1981-82 season, which was second-best ever at AU at the time.
https://aueagles.com/sports/2019/8/15/x-evurg.aspx
Haven't found any footage yet.
And how she got her nickname? She invited Ali to speak at a youth center, to which he obliged. As soon as Jackie introduced herself, she said Ali stood in silence for a moment, smiled and said, WOW, Sister Smoke!
Laila Ali's daddy gave Jackie her boxing name!O0
