It was his first fight back and he needed rounds. A 2 round KO would have made no sense.

I know what you are saying but surely after after a couple rounds on Saturday his corner could see he was not going to gain much from this fight ? I suppose it looks easier from this side of the ropes but Ward seems to be more than capable of stopping opponents like Paul Smith earlier and more decisively, and improving his marketability. Yes, it's after a long lay off but most British and even American fight fans know what Smith is going to give you and it's not ever going to be enough really, to trouble the likes of Ward.
