Re: Earnie Shavers vs. Lee 'Duke Spears' Estes ~ January 6, 1971
"Shavers Shows Off Power, Knocks Out Estes in 2"
Earnie Shavers exploded a right-hand off the head of Lee Estes
and dropped the Seattle, Washington Heavyweight for the count
@ 1:22 of Round 2.
Shavers {209 lbs.} came out bombing from the Opening Bell, and
had Estes {233 lbs.} bobbing like a bouncing Ping-Pong ball.
Late in the 1st-Round, Shavers wobbled Estes with a long right-hand
to the temple, and then had the Northwest Brawler bleeding badly
from the Nose after tagging him with '2' sweeping left-hooks.
Shavers continued with his assault in Round 2, and battered Estes
all over the Ring with lopping right-hands to the head.
With a groggy opponent in front of him, Shavers teed off on Estes
with '2' booming right-hands to the head that had him out on his feet.
Shavers added in one more right-hand, and Estes went down on his
back, and to be counted out @ 1:22 of Round 2.

Ali told David Frost a month after the Shavers fight that Earnie had hit hit him so fucking hard in the 2nd and 13th rounds that he slipped a disc in his cervical vertebrae (the small vertebrae of the neck) and his left eardrum had a slight perforation in it.

Earnie Shavers {Age; 25 years, 5 months} signs a contract with the
Silver Slipper in Las Vegas to be a 'house fighter' for their
weekly 'Wednesday Night at the Fights' circuit.
This will be Earnie's 1st-Bout in Las Vegas. Earnie is listed as being from
Youngstown, Ohio.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lee 'Duke Spears' Estes is a burly 6' 1" 233 lb. brawler from Seattle, Washington.
Though Lee Estes has a poor record, he has a reputation of being able to 'take it'.
Quietly, the Silver Slipper posts Lee Estes as having a record of '17-wins' with
{11 KO's}. There is no mention of his losses.
Earnie fought 13 times there in a matter of 3 months and 3 weeks, with 11 KOs and 2 UD's.

Pat Duncan reached the #15 WBC Heavyweight position in February 1974.
FACT. @Max Power Duncan was no joke, and was being prepared as the Great White Hope. Shavers slowed Pat's career down, even though Pat did "well" from there on. Shavers ruiined lots of fighters.

Re: earnie shavers: the hardest heavyweight puncher ever?
Ok but what about Lewis he was far bigger well coordinated and knew how to punch. Shavers hit hard but in big fights did not have the hart or stamina to finish like great so the power tad overrated. I mean i feel lewis and Bowie probably hit harder then he did but what ever.

Have we not established he was one of the hardest punching heavyweights?
Simple formula

Earnie Shavers vs. Johnny Mac ~ 'February 3, 1971'
Wednesday ~ February 3, 1971
Silver Slipper ~ Las Vegas, Nevada
Earnie Shavers ~ 19-2-0 {19 KO's} ~ 204 lbs.
vs.
Johnny Mac ~ 5-6-0 {1 KO} ~ 189 lbs.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Interesting, as this is Earnie's '1st' scheduled 10-Rounder.
Earnie {Age; 25 years, 5 months} is a late-bloomer. Earnie is now being
billed from Cleveland, Ohio.
Johnny Mac {aka; MacArthur Swindell} is a 6' 0" tall - light-hitting Heavyweight
from Chicago, Illinois.
Johnny {Age; 23 years, 1 month} is no stranger to Earnie. He fought Shavers
3-Months earlier, back on November 8, 1970 in Youngstown, Ohio.
In that bout, Johnny gave Earnie fits, before being stopped by a TKO in 4.
Johnny Mac is being billed with a record of > 8-3-0 with {3 KO's}, and is listed
as a 'crafty' Heavyweight from 'The Windy City'.

Let's get this straight.
IM NOT DENYING HIS POWER!
Its just ludicrous to believe that a 210lb fighter from 1970 who FAILED to KO heavy and decent opponents in his own era even, could REALLY be one of the hardest, keyword "EST" of punchers.
ESPECIALLY when he never fought the wide array of superheavyweight punchers and other bangers with even better performance stats than he had!
But but but, these other golden era boys said he hit hardest DOE!
Well OBVIOULY these guys are LYING for the reasons outlined, their word is worth less than a drop of piss in the desert once scrutinised AND none of them were ever punched by a more modern slugger to know! (Except Holmes, who was KTFO! Only time ever!)
-
Re: earnie shavers: the hardest heavyweight puncher ever?
none of them were ever punched by a more modern slugger?
What could they possibly do, get into a Tardis?

LOL Funny but of course not. THAT'S my point!
How can they claim and how can he BE among the hardest punchers.
They can claim, he COULD be one of the hardest punchers THEN. I don't see how it could be successfully argued that he could hit hardest later.
It was your guys here paxtom and Brockton who argued "for ALL time".
I mean let's be honest, in terms of delivery the guy could barely hit a double end bag, he was hopeless. So raw power is what's being considered right?
As you would know raw power, like punching bag power, there are guys in gyms literally EVERYWHERE who are not even proper boxers, who train most of their time simply on the heavybag, obsessed with power as they don't like the pressure of getting hit in sparring etc, aren't competitive and think this compensates somewhat for skills. These guys might not be able to fight a lick compared to a real boxer but they often develop whacking potential in EXCESS of top boxers because it's all they do all day! Helped out these days by roids and protein shakes, even a lot of THESE guys we've never heard of might hit harder.
This point is really no big deal!
The fact is that the guy was not a good boxer, he never WOULD have been a good boxer. He had a punch. Good for him!
-
Re: earnie shavers: the hardest heavyweight puncher ever?
So many fighters have said it.
Shavers was one dimensional like all big punchers who were not great. He could hit.
Bill said top 5.
-
Re: Earnie Shavers vs. Johnny Mac ~ 'February 3, 1971'
"Shavers Smashes Mac In One"
Earnie Shavers {204 lbs.} wasted little time in depositing Johnny Mac {189 lbs.}
on the canvas.
Shavers landed a tremendous right-hand to Mac's jaw that dropped the Chicago
Heavyweight to the canvas only 30-Seconds into the bout.
Mac was up at '7', but looked like he was wandering in the dark. The bout was
allowed to continue, and Shavers hammered his under-sized opponent with
a series of 'Jack-Hammer type' blows to the head.
Mac did all he could to hold on, but he was pummeled with heavy-blows as
he staggered around at Center-Ring.
Shavers finished off his over-matched opponent, when he slammed in a hard
right-hook to the head, and then a follow-up left-hook to Mac's right ear,
sending Johnny crashing to the canvas.
Referee - Davey Pearl counted out Johnny at {1:22} of Round 1.
Earnie Shavers looks like the 'new' Sonny Liston, as he has awesome punching
power.

Yeah we've been through all that.
Bill must be Shavers cousin or something and Brockton his mistress with all their Earnie licking this past week!
As for the fighters...
- They all talk smack
- They all stand to GAIN from making this claim
- They all BEAT Shavers
- They were all knocked down and WASTED by other fighters worse than Shavers
They are OBVIOUSLY lying, and even then..
- You could not REMEMBER the hardest punches! I have been knocked out before, and you DON'T remember the hardest shots because you are CONCUSSED, OBVIOUSLY! It's the LIGHTER shots that hurt more often! Until later when your trying to chew your McDonalds with a mangled jaw LOL

Re: earnie shavers: the hardest heavyweight puncher ever?
The only one who has any claim to making Shavers the hardest hitter he fought is Kenny Norton.
But again..
Foreman is the more OBVIOUS hardest hitter of that era.
And Norton's brain was in no state to judge punch power during any of his KO's.

Yet Ali was able to boast and laugh after the Shavers fight.
Yet after fighting Geroge he had to make a trip to the hospital with a broken body.
Ali was able to FIGHT Shaver properly.
Against Geroge he was covered up on the ropes and unable to even fight Geroge by conventional means until he was gassed.

Earnie Shavers
Was really, not a 'big' Heavyweight.
He fought many of his bouts under 208 lbs.

Who has the best nuthuggers: Earnie Shavers, Manny Pacquiao, or Floyd Mayweather?
I think this is a pertinent topic to be discussing as 2014 draws to a close. The question is, Who has the best fan boys/nuthuggers? Is it the fanboys of the popular Earnie Shavers, the almighty Manny Pacquiao, or the distinctive Floyd Mayweather?
Please vote and leave an opinion.

Earnie Shavers. At least Pac and Floyd nut huggers are hugging the nuts of ATGs. Earnie Shavers was a bum. These fuckers might as well go down to their nearest bus station and blow one of the homeless guys down there.

Easy there #1 Joe Bugner Fan.
Earnie deposited Joe on the floor in Round 1, and busted him apart in Round 2.
'Old Man Shavers',
Was on his way to giving Joe a First Class Ass-Whipping.
Joe Bugner > "The biggest hitter for one-shot. No doubt it was Earnie Shavers."

Thinking Shavers fills them out better. Besides, its common knowledge Mayweather wears a silk thong :-X

Re: Who has the best nuthuggers: Earnie Shavers, Manny Pacquiao, or Floyd Mayweather?
Up until a week ago it would have been a landslide for Mayweather.
Who would have knew there would be a sudden resurgence of a club fighter from 40 years past.
Gutsy stuff boys.
Next flavour of the month?

He is a COMPLETE BUM!

Well my opinion never really changes unless on those rare occasions I am convinced otherwise by logic I can only accept.
Clearly this is not the case. The guy could barely box, all of those childhood memories of yours have been blurred by your connection with that era.
I've only seen Muhammad Ali on reruns, and I used to hear all the stories from guys just like you. It's easy to buy into hype.
But when I finally seen him for myself and all the shit house opponents he fought AND struggled against too. I could not BELIEVE how gullible people must have been to swallow such garbage.

Your kidding right? Why would Holmes want to say Earnie hit him hardest and not Tyson?
Well that's pretty bloody obvious isn't it!
Because Holmes BEAT Shavers, by making this claim, he INCREASES his own legacy for surviving and beating the hardest puncher he faced and DOWNGRADES his LOSS against Tyson as being due more to Holmes not being "prime" against Tyson, thus casting doubt about whether Tyson could beat the prime Holmes.
Talking smack to boost your own wins was a HALLMARK trait of golden era fighters. None of them were really any good, so they HAD to.
-
Shavers vs Arreola
Let's put it differently.
Shavers HAS to be defended at all costs by the fighters of his era because some ducked him, one lost to him (2 if you include Ali) and the others STRUGGLED with him.
Shavers HAS to be defended at all costs by the golden era fans because he stands at an important pillar of the mythology so if Shavers is bummified (as he really should be), the whole era is bummified with him.
So what would happen if Shavers took on a guy like Arreola, who has failed 2ce now to become a champ?
Arreola would savagely waste Shavers within the 1st round even EASIER than he did Seth Mitchell.
Everybody knows it!
Arreola has an iron chin, I am CERTAIN he could take Earnie's best punch and shake it off, assuming he could even LAND it on an opponent as good as Chris! Completely objectively, Chris has a harder chin than ANY boxer in the 1970's, even harder than Geroge Chuvalo!
Nostalgists might be gasping reading this now, because Chuvalo was never dropped, but Arreola was recently stopped by Stiverne, but that is ONLY because they have not factored in that Bermane Stiverne hits several times harder than the hardest of punchers of the 1970's, harder than Shavers, harder than Foreman, not by a little bit, but by a VERY great deal! Chuvalo was never TESTED against the kind of power that Arreola has to contend with today!
Back to Shavers, Arreola is 6'4" and weighs 240lbs, Shavers never ONCE beat a good opponent like Arreola as big as that! And Arreola HIMSELF is a devastating mauler and hard puncher. He would overwhelm Earnie very early and beat him up more savagely than he has EVER been beaten before and crack that heartless, chinless bum in half in less time than it took me to write this thread!
-
Re: Shavers vs Arreola
Dude. This shit is just getting weak now ;D
-
Re: Shavers vs Arreola
They both can hit like motherfuckers but i believe that arreola can absorb more punishment.
Arreola knocks that bumass shavers the fuck out.
Shavers has a better chance against butterbean or botha.
I dont know how many of you dudes watched " Thunderbox " back in the days but there were many fighters like shavers on that show lol
