The Ref is right there and can see things that the viewers at home don't see. The eyes for one. The eyes don't lie. You can look right into a fighters eyes and know where he is at.
Ok when ref Steel was asked if he regrets stoppin the fight he told reportes and boxin fans. That there was not a ounce of regret in his mind for stoppin the fight. He said he wasn't gonna take the chance of risking and ruining a mans life no matter how high or what the stakes were, Steel said no fight is worth losing a mans life for.
In my opinion He did the right thing stopping the fight cause steel himself said Taylor had recieved 2 much punishment in the previous rounds and when JC knocked him down in the 12th and ref steel gave him the mandatory 8 count he looked into Taylor's eyes which were dialated and he asked him if he was ok and wanted to continiue and Taylor didn't respond Ref stopped the fight. Good call Imo ::**

It was a good call, what you rolling your eyes at me for ? and that quote was not mine ! you have it as my quote? as if that was my saying. that quote was from a previous message a few threads above that thread. ::**
Re: Who Thinks Meldrick Taylor Was Screwed
How dirty do you have to be to take a win away from a boxer, with 5 seconds left on the clock. That is really shitty. For me, i'd rather take 5 seconds of extreme punishment, if it means i would win. But that's just me.
Re: Who Thinks Meldrick Taylor Was Screwed
Oh! Dear god :( not this topic AGAIN.....
I've said it before and I'll say it again, with 5 sec., 4 sec., 3 sec. left just stop to think that ONE more punch could have cost Taylor his life, as it is look at how his life changed after that fight. I don't think people realize exactly how bad Taylor was beaten. I could understand why someone couldn't see that cause if you look at the fight you can see he wins almost every second of that fight untill the 12th round where 1; Duva sends him out to fight and try to win the round cause apparently they needed it. It all starts when Taylor while attempting to counter JCC reaches to far out and slips and falls showing signs of fatigue then JJC lands a right hand at exactly the 1 min. mark of the round after that Taylor plays it off and wobbles his legs mocking/tauting JCC like 'Huhh look at me my legs are shaking' from that right hand and on JCC lands a series of punches that IMO just take out whats left of Taylor....
I don't think wining the fight or a title is worth the life of any boxer.... Apparently some people feel it is.... :(

I don't think that another punch would have taken his life. I don't even think another punch would have been landed. By the time Steele wiped his gloves off and looked across the ring to restart the action, it would have been over.
I agree about not trading a fighters life. But that fight was robbery. You know Mosley vs Vargas2. After the knockdown and Vargas got up. The ref should have stopped it cause Vargas was defenseless, and barely made it up. Taylor was up, listening to his corner and it was the last seconds of the last round. The thing is the damage was already done, and he at least could have gotten the victory he deserved.

Yhe but you don't know - and that's the whole point
Re: Who Thinks Meldrick Taylor Was Screwed
Ask yourself who's career took more of a dive after that fight - aylor was never the same again
The thing that people just don't grasp is that the time of the round has no bearing on anything - it is the condition of the fighter. If the fighter does not respond when questioned (which he did not) then the ref is obliged to stop the fight!
Re: Who Thinks Meldrick Taylor Was Screwed
i think steele should of looked at red light in the corner he must of known the round was almost over anyway just using his common sense steele see he looked at his corner he should of asked him again then fight would of been over 100 percent sure chavez could not of there in 2 secs and if steele would of waved fight on would of been 1 extra second so would of been 1 second left i think taylor derserved his victory but he was finished after that fight anyway which is a shame i dont think watson should of been allowed to come out for round 12 when he ahd brain damage he couldnt even walk and ref had to drag him in the middle of the ring but they left that go on taylor beat him for 35:58 he derserved his victory yes he was never the same true but surely from all them injurys he should of had his reward of the victory ??
but everyone has there own opinion and no one will be able to change there own opinion

Thats it ! don't matter if 1 seconds left or 1 min. when a fighter is done he done. good stoppage.

In my opinion the ref was looking to stop the fight. Usually a ref grabs the fighters gloves, wipes them on his shirt, asks him to walk forward, and through that determines the fighters condition. He asks him if he wants to continue, he asks him where he is, if he did any of those things the bell would have rang and the fight would have been over without another punch being thrown.
I agree that Taylor was never the same, but it wasn't that last punch that did it, it was the accumulation over the whole fight. He fought his heart out literally, and he should have gotten the reward for doing that. Instead he's brain damaged, and he lost a fight he should have won. It's a tragedy.

would you rather he be brain damaged with a belt. The fact is NOBODY knows for sure when a boxing death can occur. Maybe the ref lets it go and Taylor takes one last shot, nobody knows what kind of damage would have been done. I know there was three seconds left JCC would have never made it across the ring. You dont think JCC knew he didnt have much time left and was ready to sprint across the ring for the chance at a (T)KO? I think he would have and would have gotten at least one shot at the bell. Taylor would have won but who knows for sure what that last shot would have done to him. Remeber G-Man didnt take the punishment that Taylor had and he collapsed in the ring. The simple truth is, is that you never know.
Re: Who Thinks Meldrick Taylor Was Screwed
It can't be a screwjob if Steele is unaware fo the time. It's a "stoppage" You think Steele knew there was less then 12 seconds left in the fight?

That's debatable. If he was on the take, yes he knew he had to stop it before time ran out. My opinion is that regardless if he was bribed or not he didn't give the fighter a chance. He waived it off right away without wiping off his gloves without asking him to come forward, he could have taken a few more seconds to evaluate the fighter. Instead he waived it off real fast. When you know the fight is almost over you should give the fighter a little bit more evalutation. It was very clear that Taylor was looking at his cornermen and not Steele. He should have demanded Taylors attention, wiped the gloves, told him to take a step forward, and if Taylor wasn't responsive then waive it off. It seems to me he was aware he had to stop it real fast, or he wanted to stop it way before. Either way Taylor got screwed.

he did demand his attention. Honestly, if a fighter is looking around when a ref is asking instructions and asking you "Are you ok? Are you ok?" and not answering, Do you think the ref is gonna say "I wonder what he's looking at?" Or is the ref going to say "This fighter has had enough."
Re: Who Thinks Meldrick Taylor Was Screwed
If it was a minute left, i could see stopping it, but with 5 seconds left, that's absolutely crooked.
