I would lable it "machismo" instead of "True Grit." In many maine event fights in Mexico these days, the announcer frequently says: Es Macho? Quien es macho el noche?" It's great to hear the crowd roar to this.Quote:

He wasn't just in the HOF just for his boxing, he was a huge political figure in his day for the still on going battles between catholics and protestants in Ireland. A very important and brave figure in extremely tough times, there's still massive problems now, but Barry united Ireland and brought hope. Even without that, could you deny one of Ireland's greatest fighters a place in the HOF?Quote:

Seriously, we are perpetual under-dogs in most sports - don't know why, maybe we just don't take it so seriously as other nations.
Witness our prowess on the cricket pitches against the all-conquering Aussies, or in Rugby against the best of the All-Blacks, Springboks, Kiwis and French, not to mention our domestic rivalries with the Scots, Welsh and Irish.
Forget football: although we have as many talented players as any other nation we just don't gel as a team - ever, apart from 1966 with home advantage!
Our fighters have always been, on average, second tier, even our very best ones! There are notable exceptions to that, namely Lennox Lewis, Ted Kid Lewis, Jimmy Wilde, Bob Fitzsimmons, but the rest had always over-performed to win their international stripes, but usually once only. Hanging on to a world title has always been the difficulty.
But, yes, once in a while they raise their game against a foreign opponent and secure their place in history, often against the odds. So, your definition is true. They show True Grit.
