I think the punch did hurt Floyd cuz he stumbled but he regained his senses quickly and did the right thing . He can still be considered a defensive messiah after that but he has a couple rivals
Winky Wright - His peek aboo defence may seem a little basic but its so effective . With his trunks around his belly , foremarms covering his chest and his hands open covering his face and forehead , its virtually impossible to penetrate it . He pulls his elbows in for body shots and punches when he sees the openings. They say a good defence is a good offence but Winky gets hit more often when he tries to fight like against Taylor . In his negative defensive mode he is really hard to beat . Tito could not work him out
Beranrd Hopkins - This style is the most difficult to master . Its taken years for Bernard to perfect but now he has it down to a fine art . He combines feints with side step movements and its really hard to lay a glove in him . He had Tarver backing up without throwing a punch cuz he had taken his confidence. Its the way he controls the ring makes the other guy fight his fight even though they may have superior power or stamina.Like Winky its not attractive to watch but boxing purists admire it
Of the 3 I probably admire Floyds defence the most as its the most layered but he hasnt been proving it against the same level of comp as the other two . All 3 are defensive greats of this era
