Re: Will UFC take over from boxing
Honestly I really don't see this great problem that UFC is gonna take over boxing. Most boxing fans cannot stand MMA and vice versa. There's less similarities between the sports than we think, and it's natural to lump them together in competition, but I don't think it's neccessary. If anything, its helping the UFC because they're the new kids on the block, and by the boxing community responding like it is, uninformed and frankly embarrassingly, they're not helping themselves either.
I don't know too much about PPV/HBO/Sho/Spike etc, what they cost to subscribe etc. but it seems like there's more than enough money to go round, as long as boxing and UFC don't clash every time there's events going on, UFC fans will buy UFC, Boxing fans will buy the PPV/tune in, and fans of both will be made to choose, and catch the other one on tape delay. As long as the events stay high quality, they're gonna buy both. If UFC spurs boxing on and vice versa, hey we as fight fans are gonna be getting our money's worth.
One thing that boxing needs to learn though, is stop disillusioning the fans. With no TV advertising due to the big fights being on HBO/Sho/PPV we the fans (and there's not too many of us) are paying, big time. They don't make enough money from corprate sponsership, we're picking up the cost with subscription fees, or ticket prices, and they're taking huge slices of the pie for themselves. De La Hoya v Mayweather made enough money to pay Oscar something stupid like $30m. That's OUR money. Mine and yours. Fight tickets are incredibly expensive, and we don't get anywhere near the treatment that UFC get in the build-up to the big night.
I went to UFC 70 and on the Saturday I was 5th row at the weigh-ins, I met all the fighters they're great guys who are humble, and want to show the fans what they mean to the sport. I even met Dana White, and he bought everyone at the weigh-in after party a drink, and thanked us for coming, and supporting the sport. He was giving the fans something that money couldn't buy. It made me feel like I'm a part of the sport.
When was the last time Frank Warren, Bob Arum and the rest of those idiots did something to endear the fans?
That, I don't see improving, but even so it probably doesn't need to be improved because big time boxing, for boxing fans will sell its self. For me, Hatton v Castillo, Cotto v Judah etc. is the perfect Saturday night, and I'll buy it what ever it costs, and I'll get my money's worth because at the end of the day it makes me happy. Boxing is doing as well as it's ever done, but it's a select few who keep it running these days, rather than the whole world.
But the point I'm making is, UFC cannot kill boxing and vice versa, because there's room for both, and there always will because we can buy both, and both camps would be stupid to limit our ability to choose both, rather than just one.
