I haven't watched this one in a while. I know Whitaker was knocked down about 5 seconds into the fight. He wasn't hurt, he just wasn't prepared for a punch and he was off-balance. I don't remember if he was knocked down a second time.
He wasn't really getting dominated. It was just that Hurtado was fighting very awkwardly. Hurtado would jump in, throw a combo, and then run away. Pernell was old and past his prime, so he didn't really have the speed or energy to chase him down all night.
I know Hurtado was ahead on the scorecards when Pernell KO'd him with a big left hand in the 11th. The Whitaker-De La Hoya fight had already been agreed to, this was Pernell's tuneup fight. If he had lost, the DLH-Whitaker fight wouldn't have happened.

I read an article that this fight showed Whitaker was slipping and they also said he showed great heart to comeback and even a Whitaker who was fading arguably gave prime Oscar his first loss thats what you call talent i have seen alot of Whitaker but i haven't seen the Hurtado fight but Whitaker was defensive genious he done things that i hadn't seen before people called him boring but i found his defensive skills exciting the way he used reflexes to avoid punches and he always used to stand in punching range aswell gotta admire Whitaker fought a prime Tito aswell when he was past it and still went 12 rounds he was never stopped either only in his last fight when he broke his clavicle but that really wasn't a stoppage but anyway Whitaker is all time great and arguably finest defensive fighter ever.

How about Carol Thompson v Sebastian Rothmann. Can't remember the round but Thompson was very shaky then landed the classic left jab right cross combo which put Rothmann down face first.
