Some people don't know this but he fought Johnny Nelson early in his career (1992) beat Nelson on points.
And he did something i dont think any current Heavy could do. Beat Wladdy Klit.
CC back mate. This thread is a good change from the usual Floyd, Hatton, Cotto posts that dominate this board lately.
Oddly enough as I was rushing to make this thread I said to myself "With all the Cotto, Hatton, PBF threads going on chances are I'll be lucky if anyone replies" :D
I'm working on some good lists so look out for them. ;)
Thanks...
After reading this thread and cos im an Aussie i was thinking of starting a best Aussie fighter thread. Where u gonna do one on that cos i dont wanna stop u.
I think you should start working on it. ;)

Weeks a go I made a thread about the greatest Japanese fighter. Thanks to everyone for the replies and input I myself learned some stuff from that thread.
I did some research for the greatest African fighter here's what I came up with...
(Let me clarify that I put the list together looking at skills, opposition, titles, wins vs. loses among other things. I've also at least seen 1 full fight of each fighter plus highlights.)
1. Azumah Nelson
2. Dick Tiger (Richard Ihetu)
3. Thulani Malinga
4. Ike Quartey
5. Ayub Kalule
6. Sumbu Kalambay (Thanks No Contest ;) )
7. Harry Simon
8. Brian Mitchell
9.Digaan Thobela
10. Vuyani Bungu
*It's hard for me to rate Hogan Bassey cause I've only seen some small clips on him I know he beat Pep and all that but still I'd hate to rate him on that alone
Honor mentions: Wayne Brathwheit, Piet Crous, Zolani Petelo, Silence Mabuza, Kassim Ouma, Ike Ibeabuchi, John Mugabi.
Thoughts opinions?
With out a doubt The Professor Imo.Nice tread mick,Love your variety and wide range.Nice to see Mitchell on Someones list and getting mention. He was way over shadowed by the screwed up caveman policies of apartheid, spent ALOT of career batteling stigma of just being from south Africa and career was after thought to some.
Was Simon Brown born in Africa???
Mbuelo Botile.
a few mentions to parse through....Welcome Ncita/David Kotey (70's)/Jake Matlala/Terrance Alli (?)/Boza -Edwards/. Nice Mick,got the mind moving Bro!

Re: * Who is the Greatest African fighter? *
Two fighters that were ESPN fighters in the 80's who I thought were fantastic were Cornelius Boza Edwards and Terrance Alli.
Both those guys were amazing in their own way.

Right on Spicoli..
I fixed my list several times... I was really putting this together fast and mixed in there Jamaica with Africa... :(
I had about 6 different windows open and should have been as careful as I was with my Japanese list.
You live you learn, :)
It's too bad Mitchell didn't get a lot more exposure he was a superb fighter.
Great call on Ncita..... ;)

Re: * Who is the Greatest African fighter? *
Real good list. Agreed with Nelson at #1. I might have had Harry Simon a little higher, but I admit I'm kinda biased as Im a big fan of his
Re: * Who is the Greatest African fighter? *
It's the Professor for sure, Nelson was a superb champion throughout his career, i would consider Quartey up next just ahead of Tiger.
Re: * Who is the Greatest African fighter? *
Ike Quartey is from Ghana. I remember this. I had a professor from Ghana and we talked about it. We also spoke of something like %40 of Ghanians smoke reefer all day, everyday. For a while after that I wanted to do a study abroad in Ghana. It is supposed to be a beautiful country too. I had dreams of doing nothing but boxing and smoking weed all day and all night in Ghana

Right on THIRD MAN on Nelson.
What are you going by when you say Ike over Tiger? (curious)
I feel that Tiger was very skilled, fought the better opposition and the wins-loses and titles are more then what Ike did.

Re: * Who is the Greatest African fighter? *
Ummm...Off the top of my Head. Nelson?
Re: * Who is the Greatest African fighter? *
OK. Just a couple of points from A British born Ghanian
Wayne Braithwait is from Guyana not Ghana. Guyana is in South America.
Ghana never will have a civil war.
Ghana is a beautiful country and I will get to experience it again next year for the African Nations Footy (Soccer to our US friends) tournament.
