Well he did punch himself in the face. Beyond that, he's just not very good, and not progressing either.

This is obviously just a fight to build up Haye-Klitschko, to get Wlad more of a name in the UK. Other then that yeah it's a shit fight.
I tell you man, Manny is going to turn Wlad back into more of the boxer/puncher he used to be. Wlad is going to start gunning for earlier more spectacular KO's. If Wlad put the pedal to the metal in the 1st round how many guys in the division could hang with him?
Chisora may or may not end up fighting Wlad but if he does Chisora is going to get blasted.
I think Chisora has a good chance against Haye and shoould target him. Wlad is better than this and Adamek has earned the right to be next.
Take all the holding and leaning away and Wlad could be taken apart by anyone we never get to see what he can do if he has to stand and fight cos he tires his opponents out holding and leaning on them and the refs do nothing
rjjtszyu, I doubt he'll go 100% back to that style because obviously Manny has taught him some really necessary things which he'll continue to use, but hopefully more sparingly like the clinching and the leaning. But the fact is Wlad is mentally and psychologically in top form and Manny knows Wlad can fight like he used to given the state of the division and the state of Wlad's game.
TysonBruno, there are no more Lamon Brewster's, there are no more Corrie Sanders' and Wlad is a much smarter fighter right now...when you look at this heavyweight division there aren't "challenges" there are just questions and they are mainly about Wlad's opponents ie "Can _____ land the big punch?" or "Can ____ withstand the firepower?". Manny has already gotten Wlad to lessen the clinching and hell vs Sam Peter SAM was the one clinching half the fight and Manny told Wlad to break the clinch and let his hands go and that ended the fight. The clinching and leaning is nothing new though, Ali did it, Lewis did it...hell Lewis hooked Michael Grant behind the head and shot uppercuts at him until he went down. It's nothing new and it's just something fighters have to get through. Most of the guys Wlad fights allow themselves to be tied up.
Now I've said it will be extremely difficult for Chicken Little to win back American fans, but it's going to be even more difficult for Wladimir but I do believe that is another reason why Manny wants Wlad to switch his style up to the way Wlad used to fight because Wlad won't get full credit for how good he is unless he's good in America too. The good news is there is time to do it, the bad news is there aren't that many fights where he can do it infront of a large American audiance...seeing fights on ESPN is one thing but being on HBO and getting back to being more active and varied in his attack will help out immensely.
Man, that Mercer fight is different to look at isn't it? Wlad was all over Ray, he even hooked to the body several times! It would be nice for him to recover more of that, it would be good for boxing it would be GREAT for the Chicken Little fight (providing it happens)
Why not take the fight? I'd rather see him lose to a world champion Klitschko than a european level fighter. I don't see him ever having the tools to beat either of the brothers so why not take the fight get a bit of recognition and a pay day. Plus i heard Frank would rather him fight the winner of Haye vs Harrison or even Valuev.
This thread really does highlight how people make exceptions for the fighters they nut hug.
Now this is a good post. And I agree, watching the Mercer fight was like watching someone else. He was relentless and his left hook lead was as effective as his jab is now but obviously more risky. Then again it was far better to watch (especially for an armchair boxing fan) and taking that extra risk could be the key to getting HW boxing interesting again especially for when the Haye fight does develop.
On the other hand Mercer was old and very slow and was basically a very slow moving heavy bag, who showed little glimpses of a man who used to be able to bob and weave but everytime he tried the motion it was like he just couldn't do it anymore. That is not Wlads fault and he could only beat who was put in font of him but at that stage Mercer was tailor made for Wlad to look very good against. Again though I wish he had fought like that vs Peter the other week though because again Peters bobbing and weaving was so slow Wlad could have really opened up on him and got the job done within 3 or 4 rounds IMO.
I'm not getting into why I think Haye has one hell of a chance of beating Wlad again because I've gone over it time and time again, but If your right and Wlad does go back to more of his old style of fighting then it is a fight, as a boxing fan, that I will really look forward to seeing!!
Changing styles doesn't happen over night, Manny had to rescue Wlad mentally and psychologically to get him back on top. Manny had to do a similar thing to Lennox Lewis. Like with Lennox Lewis who wasn't appreciated in the US until very late in his career, Manny wants to get Wlad that appreciation. I have faith that Manny and Wlad will make it happen, the only issue is back when Lennox was fighting there were some distractions in the heavyweight division, now it's JUST Wlad and Vitali and that makes it a little difficult to have these kind of "throw away" fights and try to explain them to the average fan. A spectacular KO of Derek Chisora means fuck all but the means in which that KO is acheived means a lot.
Wlad won't be exactly like he was vs Mercer because he had flaws there obviously, but Manny will get Wlad to open up sooner and utilize his defense a bit and maybe counter punch. I think they could have probably tried to get this style changed around earlier but that could have upended Wlad's career had they forced the change. It's going to be an easy change and you already see parts of it vs Sam Peter, more left hooks, more uppercuts, soon you may see Wlad go to the body a bit more or throw in combinations a bit more. It's going to take a while but once that switch flips in Wlad's mind we'll see more action and that's a great thing especially if other contenders can develop a bit as well.
If by other contenders you mean Haye, I have emphasised before that he is not the finished article yet by quite a way, and I feel that is why he is stalling when he comes to a Wlad fight. I also feel it may be why he has taken the Audley fight. Audley is a very similar size to Wlad, he was a very good amateur like Wlad, but unlike Wlad he doesn't have the skill to convert that to the professional ranks. So it COULD be kind of a practice for Haye with someone of Wlads size (I am not in any way comparing him to Wlad by the way, I know that he is not even in reality a top 30 fighter and Wlad is THE MAN). Also if Vitali looks poor again when he fights "The Cannon" then I think Haye may feel the time is right to go for Vitali, again a man of similar size to Wlad, but a much bigger risk than Audley obviously. Then if he comes through that I think he will feel the time is right to go for Wlad.
Haye needs to improve in certain areas though and the main one is when he has someone hurt (like he did with Ruiz in the first minute), instead of wasting punches left right and centre against someone who is curled up defending, stepping back and picking his good hard shots that got them hurt in the first place. There are other points he needs to improve on but that is a real worry for me.
