I'd be surprised if it wasn't at a catch-weight.
According to Floyd, the fight will happen at the weight Cotto is most comfortable at, if true that would be at 154, no catch-weight.
Cotto fights often, and is used to being in "wars", but Floyd isn't, this could get interesting if Miguel can penetrate Mayweather's defense and land some significant shots. Floyd just might have bitten off more then he could chew.
Re: Its Mayweather v Cotto on May 5th
It's so ridiculous to see the Floyd v. Manny BS from only one viewpoint. They're both great in their own ways and should be appreciated as such.
Floyd fought Hatton at 147 when Hatton was clearly more effective at 140. Heck, Collazo almost beat him at 147. Floyd fought Marquez at 144 and came in at 146 when Marquez had never fought above 135 and only fought twice. Pacquiao fought Cotto at 145 when he should have fought Cotto at 147. It really goes both ways.
At least now we know Floyd has no problem fighting Pacquiao's leftovers after all because Floyd made it very clear that Pacquiao fights his leftovers. You know what I admire? For all the racist jabs, the youtube videos disparaging him etc., I don't believe I've heard Pacquiao say anything about PBF or at least very little.
Other than Lyle, does anyone else see this as competitive?
Re: Its Mayweather v Cotto on May 5th
WAR Cotto! That's first and foremost.
Off the top, I like this one. Yeh it could-should have happened a while back but what are ya gonna do. As long as all of the weight clause jibber jabber is kept in the trash can and both come in at honest weight it's a clean go. I think Cotto has a shot but he may have to revert a little and not go into his over thinking mode. He's not outboxing Floyd, not yesterday, not today and not tomorrow. He's going to have to think of the head as purely secondary and work off that improved jab greatly from jump off. I don't worry as much about his stamina late as I do him cutting up badly early.
Not looking forward to yet another I hate my daddy and the piss and moan fest on 24-7 though. The contrast in class and difference in composure between these two will be big.

You've got to be aggressive, but not leave yourself open for counters, you've got to use good defense but also you have to win rounds. Floyd will no doubt use his questionable tactics (much like other great fighters), the elbows and forearms, but Cotto is a hoss, he can give back some rough stuff as well.
Cotto should not ONLY focus on the body, but he should gun for Floyd's arms as well. Floyd uses his arms for defense and he's one of the best defensive fighters I've ever seen, but the manner in which he uses them he has to have quick reactions to counterpunch...if his arms got slowed down by power punches then theoretically he would be more vulnerable. The main thing is Cotto has to find a way to negate Floyd's speed....if he can do that with his power or with his timing he can pull off a HUGE upset!
Cotto has been burried by his critics before "He'll never be the same" after the Margarito fight, "He's done as a fighter" after the Pacquiao fight....well this is Cotto's chance to achieve the seemingly impossible...I for one know he'll put up a hell of a fight!
Great post Lyle, Cotto does need to take the initiative and set the tempo for the fight adjusting the game plan not allowing Floyd to find his rhythm.
Re: Its Mayweather v Cotto on May 5th
It is official, my estimation of Floyd Mayweather has increased tenfold by this announcement to fight Cotto at light middle weight. Well done to him for getting out of his comfort zone and taking a real challenge. Whilst Cotto is slightly damaged from his 2 defeats, he has come back strong with his victories and established himself as a good champion at the weight. Floyd is taking Cotto at his weight so the fight nearly evens itself out but I have Floyd as marginal favourite. It will be a terrific technical fight which I am really looking forward to.
I do think the fight is at catch weight 150lb.
Conversely my estimation in Pacquiao has gone down, he tried to force Cotto to fight at a lower weight, which Cotto refused. Well done to him for standing his ground and not going for the money.

Everyone knows Cotto has stones...he fought Pacquiao without having a trainer in his corner!
I want to see Floyd try to get under Cotto's skin....ain't gonna happen bro!

Hulk, if this fight happened at 140, Floyd would have torn an inexperienced and weight drained Cotto a new hole. The best time this fight to happen for Cotto would have been at 147 after Floyd fought ODLH. At 154 he still will have a weight advantage so its a better fight than if it were at 140.
I'm pleased for both fighters. Cotto has earned his shot and pleased for Floyd once again sticking it to Team Pac and continues proving that he will take legit challenges without trying to disadvantage his opponent.
Roll on May 5th
I disagree as a young hungry undefeated Cotto beats a shopworn aging Cotto.
However I do agree that 147 probably would have been the absolute best time for these two to fight.

I'm glad to hear it will be at 154. It still won't be competitive though. I can't see Cotto winning more than maybe two or three rounds and I think he gets knocked out.

Nope.
Re: Its Mayweather v Cotto on May 5th
It will be competitive even the other posters are saying 7-5 or 8-4 so Cotto just needs a couple more to win this fight. I hope he can do it, he is smarter now.
Re: Its Mayweather v Cotto on May 5th
that's if the fight indeed does go through now, according to the papers this morning Bob Arum is now claiming that Cotto owes him one last fight , Bob Arum seriously needs to have a stroke and retire already
Re: Its Mayweather v Cotto on May 5th
cotto before the 1st margarito fight would beat his head in, but now....this will be a interesting fight if cotto can get to mayweathers body, they goto get miguel back to working the body, he was one of the best body wreckers in the sport but thats almost ompleat gone from his game now.....goto work the body miguel its something that others havent donr to that prat......mayweather is fav but i hope cotto can pull one last great effort out of the hat, this will most prob be the last high profile fight of a great warriors carreer
GO COTTO
Re: Its Mayweather v Cotto on May 5th
Cotto will have to get down and dirty to stand a chance in this fight. Turn it into a brawl and don't be predictable because he could get a beating like Gatti got if he does.
Re: Its Mayweather v Cotto on May 5th
I think emotions are ruling the head here, the Miguel Cotto of 2012 is not the same guy from 2007/08. He is a great fighter and in my opinion has only ever lost once legitimately.
Floyd is still the best defensive fight of all time, Cotto's only chance is the body, he goes for the head and Floyd will not be there. It could be a Gatti type fight for Floyd, Cotto will be hit and hit often by Floyd, i expect a wide UD for PBF with one part of me hoping for a glorious left rip to the body by Cotto that has the pretty boy doubling up and falling to the canvas. It's a nice dream.
