From my understanding directional blasts have much more to do with the shape of the charge (conical vs spherical etc) when using plastic explosives then the container. Obviously something able to withstand the blast pressure could funnel it but a bulk explosive is just going to blow out in all directions from inside a trashcan. The trashcan will provide you some shrapnel though.
