Re: Magomed Abdusalamov is in Self-Induced Coma
Boxing News | Abdusalamov suffers stroke; Family facing staggering medical bills; Team Abdusalamov establishing trust fund
Well it doesn't look good now.. Apparently the guys family will be in huge debt on top of having to pray that he makes it out alive. Medical expenses should all be covered by HBO or his promoter after that fight(or any like this) for christs sake, his purse was only 40,000:mad:
Re: Magomed Abdusalamov is in Self-Induced Coma
Jesus that's awful. The promoter is obligated to provide medical insurance, so I wonder how much of it is covered?
Great to hear Sergio Martinez stepped up to help. I'm sure he won't be the only boxer stepping up.

Yeah I'm certain other boxers will step in and help there are quite a few who are very charitable with their money.
I just hope he survives ok and is able to lead a long full life.
Re: Magomed Abdusalamov is in Self-Induced Coma
I don't fault them for not stopping the fight. As far as they knew, all he had was a busted nose and a swollen cheekbone, both of which fighters are expected to fight through. I don't remember a point in the fight where I thought it should have been stopped, because Perez wasn't really visibly hurting him to the point where it looked like he would KO him, and Magomed was always firing back.
Re: Magomed Abdusalamov is in Self-Induced Coma
Who is Abdusalamov's promoter? K2, right? If so the Klitschkos are morally responsible for this guy. He shouldn't have to pay a nickel in medical bills, they should take care of the whole thing. If he does recover and drops off the radar then months later we hear he's in desperate straits it's not going to make the Klitschkos look good.

His promoter is Sampson Lewkowicz, but you were saying?

This is my attitude, I didn't ask the guy to get in the ring but I do want him protected as much as possible, within the rules, while he is fighting for my entertainment. If we error for the sake of fighter safety then do it.
I think this is your attitude, I didn't ask the guy to get in the ring, if he fights a stupid and winds up in the hospital he should be grateful I spent the time and money to watch the fight. Am I wrong?
You're 100% wrong. Obviously you haven't read many of my posts (including posts in this very thread) where I've always had a very protective stance of the fighters.
I'm with you on the KO thing, but lets face facts: if he threw in the towel at any point during that fight, everyone would be talking about how he was a quitter and had no heart, got exposed, ect, and his career would have been in the toilet before it really began. He would have to spend YEARS trying to work his way back into a "prospect" position, and even then people would be dogging him saying "well he quit when it got too hot a few years back, maybe he'll do it again."
That's the culture of boxing: if you still have your wits and physical faculties about you, you are expected to fight on. Especially in his position, where a win could have propelled him to much bigger paydays and a loss could send him spiraling into obscurity.
And it wasn't like this was a blow-out fight. IMO Perez was the clear victor, but Magomed clearly won a few rounds in my eyes, and in a 10 round fight you have no idea what the judges are going to do (one judge had them a point apart). Magomed, as far as he and his corner knew, still had a great chance of winning.
So don't give me that shit about wanting to see the fight stopped after the fact. This is a crap shoot. I've seen guys take 10x the punishment he took in a fight and come out fine.
Re: Magomed Abdusalamov is in Self-Induced Coma
Let's be honest 1 punch ALONE can kill someone so boxing will never be 100% safe, really no sport is 100% safe. Mago knew the dangers he faced in the ring, every boxer knows. Hopefully the doctors can get him healthy again but it's ended his career and that's 100% certain.
Re: Magomed Abdusalamov is in Self-Induced Coma
I think it was around the 5th or 6th round, when he went back to his cornet I did think, this could be getting stopped soon, something about his body language and expression going to the corner did worry a touch.
But the way the fight went on, he seemed ok (relatively speaking) and half of us would by talking about a 'bad stoppage' instead of a stroke.
I sincerely hope he pulls through, my dad was in a coma and then a medically induced one, hit by a car. The immediate trauma is terrible, but long long term ramifications could be far reaching and just as bad not just for him, but his family.

Well that's the funny thing about the human brain I guess. Some people fall out of airplanes and survive, and some people trip on a shoelace and smash their head and die.
You can't gaurentee safety in boxing... but I know for sure you can improve your odds by practicing the sweet science and trying to get hit as little as possible.

I'm not doctor and don't really understand the full implications of his scenario and I wish him the best.
But all I know is history hasn't been kind to boxers who have gone into coma's and had blood clots after fights in general. Hopefully he can beat the odds and come out of this ok. It's heart breaking to know he has a wife and very young kids there.
