He was a lethal puncher. When he was coming through with Cus D'amato (& Kevin Rooney) he was also an incredible combination puncher with great movement and balance. The reason we all still talk about him was because pre-1988 he was brilliant and no one could touch him at the time. It didn't last and he was flawed which is the other reason we still talk about him. But even after this time he was still fantastic in the ring, even in defeat.
Im reading his new book at the moment and if what he's saying is true then we only saw the very best of him a few times , by the time he'd won the belts he was partying hard , drinking loads and fucking anything with a pulse.
Makes you wonder how much more devastating he could have been if Cus could have been by his side.
By the time he fought Bruno he was a mess and was still able to destroy opponents.
For me and at his peak no one could match him for power in either fist.
The man really was dynamite and was fierce with his body attacks too.
Good book if you haven't read it yet ;)
Yeah it's probably the best autobiography I've ever read, and I read a lot.
He really was a crazy piece of shit outside the ring.
I just wanna remember tyson from the 80s..
Id also like to mention Joe Louis and Bowe.. Louis' punch was short and compact just like tyson but the result was devastating..
Riddick Bowe is the best puncher out of the superheavyweights... he was the first superheavy with fluid movement and its crazy to think that a big man like him were to throw these smooth compact punches.. Riddick Bowe was sick!

I would say Tyson has to be in the argument. I would agree in his heyday the best pure puncher ever. George Foreman is bigger but doesn't have the hand speed in his prime. His punches were heavy, but he didn't have the snap. Tyson had hand speed close to Floyd Patterson, and with Tyson's weight advantage he has the power edge. Frazier, Gerry Conney (hook alone), are the only other ones I can say have power. Current crop - forget about it. Just to qualify, I am rating 70's and later, I can't say Marciano, Johnson, Johannson because I just don't know. Great subject.Quote:
