Will there ever be another Roy Jones?

Roy did have fundamental boxing skills but he simply had more success with his unorthodox style based on his reflexes, speed, balance and power.

I don't think a more focussed effort on training and utilising these "fundamental skills" would have improved Roy at all. Probably detracting from his incredible style he did have.

The second knock on RJJ was his testing positive for a banned substance, the 3rd knock was when he came back to LHW, the title was stripped of the one who won it in the ring- wreaked of favoritism. That fighter sued ...and won, proving RJJ should've fought to get the LHW title back.

RJJ's talent & yes skill can't be denied. A bad mofo, but his rule consisted of too many ordinary Joes: Lastly when he chose to fight vinny Pazienza, I felt cheated. Paz, seemed to roided up...when comparing him to his early days and came back from what was it? A motorcycle accident? I expected Michael Nunn or Rochiaginni, but after Toney, the names were pretty weak, if not awful. Maybe credit to fighting the body snatcher McCallum, but... this was 96? a dude who had been fighting since 1981?!

I agree with what Manny Steward said: Roy is probably the most waste of talent ever. So much skill so much speed & power and who did he display it against? Thorton, Sosa, Lucas, Brannon, Griffin was a good fighter, but few knew him. Hill was always considered protected. Then Devalle, Grant, Reggie Johnson :mad:, Telesco? :-\ Richard Hall?! :( A who's who list of WHO are these guys?:confused:

Great talent, unique skills, but a horrible manager of his own fights.

A lot of what you say is right and Benn, Eubanks and Micheleski fella would have looked better on his record but he did go up to heavyweight and that was an incredible accomplishment too. It nearly makes up for not beating those fighters.

Not at all., It's not about quantity, it's about quality. What I meant by comparing SRR's 100 plus fights, was that he actually was 122-1 by his 11th year, tough to say his skills eroded after 100 plus fights, so we have to use age. to which I agree with you that by 35 he was shot. But not after 50 fights, let alone 120 fights.

Come on, dude. Sugar Ray Robinson was shit at 35. So was Henry Armstrong, Willie Pep, Joe Louis, Muhammad Ali, Sugar Ray Leonard, Pernell Whitaker, ect ect. That's the age where guys are typically past their prime, if not sooner.

35 was ancient then...but fellaz like Bhop to Tarver have changed the goal posts. ALL DAY LONG. Even smaller fighters were finished by their mid-30's but JMM is changing that as well. RJJ lives a healthy lifestyle, no drugs alcohol, food binging, so what gives that he physically deterioated when he didnt have war upon war? My best guess is that losing all that muscle to drop down, must of really hurt him...or he was a closet freak and the women drained him!!!

Huge. accomplishment. Only thing bad about Ruiz to me was he didnt have a fan friendly style, but he was a legit HW and even gave Holyfield trouble.

Do you know the reason why he didn't fight Nigel Benn, Eubank, Michalczewski, ect? Do you have an opinion on the reason why they didn't happen?

Even the most shot version of Tyson would have utterly destroyed Roy. That is beyond the scope of what he would be capable of at HW.

I think the Toney that beat Holyfield would have been able to beat that version of Tyson.

There should've been a "probably" option in there. But I chose "I don't know. RJJ was special." Because he was. I too do not put a lot of stock in his "technical flaws". He fought the way he wanted to fight.... was tremendously entertaining.... and won most of his fights. I for one was sad to see his steep decline. He had speed... he had power... he had athleticism... AND, he had charisma, something sadly lacking in many fighters today.

His speed and reflexes were the first to go and its obvious the drop from heavyweight ruined him.

But look what he has acomplished up until this day...RJJ is the only boxer I would ever want to be in his prime and that includes mayweather.
