Re: Larry Holmes- Championship run needs revisiting?
Regarding Holmes: Isn't it lovely we have technology at our disposal to review and critique modern day athletes? Some of you guys would be on a 24/7 bitch-fest if Dempsey's era had ESPN, Sports Illustrated, Boxingscene, Fightnews & friggin' Twitter to echo their every sentiment about not fighting this guy 'cause he's black or that guy cause I'm too pretty. Yeah Holmes didn't have a great attitude, so what.
Thank goodness we don't have footage of all of Benny Leonard to Lamotta's fights & post fight interviews. Based on what I'm reading here: their resume would be reduced to late-night talk show fodder-if we re-access their careers' they way we are doing Holmes'.
20 defenses in any era be it Tunney, Marciano, Holmes & even Wlad's is a testament to longevity & mastering one's craft. Holmes was a master of his craft, period.
Regarding Ali:
Ali took an almost American sport exclusively whose genesis in England- & made it global.
Looking @ who he struggled with and who beat him doesn't even fuck with what made him great.
Because of Ali, boxers got to make money in the 7 figures. ALI DID THAT.
They got to do commercials & endorsements, globally- ALI DID THAT.
And the near billion Muslims to various nations that didn't speak English KNEW who Ali was. Philippines to Kinshasa Zaire.
Facing Ali debunks all the Ali-haters.
R.I.P: Who would Frazier had been without Ali? A dude that won a title, then got his ass bounced like a ball by Forman, that's who he would've been. Yes I agree Ali talked bad about him. I hate he did that, but where would Frazier be in the history book (WITHOUT) Ali?
Ken Norton R.I.P doesn't cry about his loss the way Ali-haters do. He simply said him & his son at best would eat a hotdog or two, but because Ali's pompous attitude to keep fighting him until he could get a 1/2 ass decision: Norton could feed his family: well.
Ron Lyle R.I.P said it best: "Should I complain about the loss? What for? Be-4 Ali I was an inmate doing a thousand pushups a day off a bowl of spinach. So if it hadn't been for Ali...would I be here talking to you?
'bout what?"

Yeah...... good try, Billy.
Next time you post a bullshit quote, provide some proof instead of just putting quotation marks around it to make it sound legit.

You're intense, obsessive distain goes way beyond boxing, did you oppose the civil rights movement Bill? I'm struggling to think what else could be notable enough to not just have left a chip on your shoulder, but completely severed it.
It can't be the trash talking? Ali wasn't the first, maybe the brashest for his time but boxing has seen PLENTY of trash talking since so it can't be that?
You're an old man, so it would make sense.
I'm thinking Bill was around for Ali's peak years. Maybe even old enough to have served in Vietnam... and holds a lifelong grudge against Ali for not having stepped forward when drafted.
The three points he puts forth after your post are nothing that can't be said about countless other fighters who choose to fight on for too long. So basically, nothing explains Bill's obsession with Ali but pure hatred, the kind that only comes from having a personal nerve touched in some way. I'm staying with the Vietnam theory until proven otherwise.
I think Bill is Larry Holmes himself. Larry or someone close to Larry, OR a former opponent of Ali that got his ass kicked severely and just cant get over it.

Fun Fact
Watching Tyson knock out Holmes?
Re: Larry Holmes- Championship run needs revisiting?
Tyson would have done the same shit to a post-1971 Ali IMO.
Re: Larry Holmes- Championship run needs revisiting?
Ahh... Tyson.... both hands were lethal. ;D

Agreed Post: not pre.
Pre 1970's Ali: Tyson bites Ali's nipples off.

Larry Holmes
"I never thought that I'd see the day that Muhammad Ali would 'quit' on his stool. He's got
some Dog in him like everybody else."
"At least Floyd Patterson went down on his shield. Muhammad hid behind Angelo Dundee
and Bundini Brown. I lost respect for him for doing that."

Yet another bullshit quote. Just trying to stoke the fire, eh Billy?
Re: Larry Holmes- Championship run needs revisiting?
Larry Holmes between Round 8 and 9 of the Ali fight: "don't give me any water, Richie. I want to take this clown out to the Deep Blue Sea and drown him. Look at his stupid moustache."
