Haha, I'm used to that.
A little kid in a stroller at the Ringside tournament pointed at me and said "Mom, is that a boy or a girl?" (f*ckin brat) lol

I had the opportunity to get a bout tomorrow but there is a huge storm here and it didn't seem worth it to drive over a huge mountain pass through the snow and ice to fight someone I've already beat twice. So hopefully next weekend I'll get a bout. I'm itching to get back in there and end my losing streak.
I'm running a 5k in the morning. I have no idea why. It's crazy cold here. Windy, snowing and the temp is going to be about 15°! :coldnew::cold: Oh, and I'm getting a cold. Probably not the best idea to go out and run but I have a problem with not doing things I say I'm going to do. Besides, maybe no one will show and I can win. ;D
Haha, that would probably help.
Just got back from a light conditioning night at the gym. 1 hour, alternating between the bike, shadowboxing and abs. I may have a bout this coming Saturday and I haven't really been watching what I eat so I need to lose a few pounds. I'm about 23 pounds over what I normally walk around at, so nothing too drastic, I'll just have to do a little extra these next couple of days.
I did mean 2-3. Haha, woops. Yeah, I'm not sure I could put on 23 pounds no matter how hard I tried.
I think I'm losing motivation. I have a fight next weekend. I'm not too excited about it. It's against a gal who I lost to this summer. I've thought about it for three months now and I can't come up with a strategy to beat her. It's a 6-hour drive from here and there will be an official there who was border-line stalking me last year. So it's not something I'm really looking forward to. To top it off my coach is all jacked and saying I can beat her and need to even the score and all this crap....even though he hasn't given me any idea's on what to do different to win this time. I sort of feel like I'm only doing it because everyone else thinks I should.
Just wondering sourpuss, as I follow your log as well as others. I've noticed that sometimes you tend to get a negative mindset going into fights. I know you haven't had the best of luck in draws and so on, but also that you seem to focus on the negatives. Not sure if you do this on purpose to address the thoughts maybe that are floating around in your head...and that it is productive that way, or if you set yourself up for a negative result by doing so.
One fight I went into feeling negative, because i had hurt my lower back before and was upset at my coach for it...then I got there, and the guy was much taller then me...well, I found that it was my worst performance. I fought really tentative and didn't commit to punches and so on. Overall my reasoning for the negatives was real, as in...I really was hurt, but I think my mental prep. affected me even more.
So just wondering how it works for you.
Yeah, I see what you are saying...and you're not the first to say it to me either. I get down before I fight and I let things get to me. I can only remember one time when I went in 100% confident and ready and it really blew up in my face. :(
This time though I think I'm just being realistic. I don't know, I've probably cried wolf too many times. Haha. I feel like I'm just going along to please everyone else and I'm just going to lose and be embarrassed. :-\
stay with it...
Ok, so I've watched the videos and came up with a game plan so I feel a little better about it. My coach and I will work all week on it so we'll see....
Good Luck!
Is nice to have those vids. Every bit helps.
My opponent got the flu. :-\
More time to prepare, right? (looking on the bright side)
I'm hoping that someone will turn up but the chances are slim to none.
Have you tried trash talking your opponents into fighting you? James Toney style? I think it suits you :)
That is a bummer but i guess when the weather is cold and you're NOT sick while other people are then you're doing something right with your training.
I always found I'd get sick easily when i was in full training and it annoyed me but if you don't that's something to be proud of.
You have more time to develop your game plan too and make some of the counters you need automatic so even under pressure it will be there when she is ready to compete again - probably a bit out of condition after being sick. ;)
Thanks everyone. Starting tomorrow I'm going to get back in to training nazi mode. I feel like I've been a bit lazy lately and I know I haven't been doing enough. I've been getting a lot of sparring but it's with a gal from my gym who is very new and VERY slow. So I think I may have actually taken a few steps backwards. :-\ So I'm going to concentrate on my style and conditioning on all my workouts outside of the gym and in the gym as much as possible. I think I may just use sparring with this gal as a conditioning exercise and hope that I don't pick up too many bad habits. Anyone else ever had this problem? This is the second time this has happened to me.
I have had this problem for sure.
I really don't know what to do about it. i think it's common when you don't have enough sparring partners your own size to work with.
Plus if have a good sparring temprement then a coach will trust you with a beginner and think he's made a good match and forget that you need other sparring partners too.
I think I commented a few times but probably was not really pushy enough about getting a variety od sparring partners.
When the state squad had interclub sparring that was awesome but when it wasn't there then it sucked really.
My main coach didn't really want me to go there because it was on a day when he would traditionally get me to work with his girlfriend.
At the time this started we hadn't done that for a while but she wanted more coaching so he wanted to start it again but we could have just as easily done that any other day of the week.
I ended up going anyway but i think my coaches attitude set a precident for where they prioritized my training in the club.
I think my skills ended up going backwards in most areas especially since for a long time i wasn't even allowed to throw particular combinations at her like hooks or uppercuts and her being taller and heavier i found that really limiting.
If your coach really can't see that you need better quality sparring i would go elsewhere because he's either really not taking your development seriously or he doesn't know what you need to develop.
That sounds harsh but as you say this is the second time it has happened to you!
Oddly Feur fought with the flu
Before anybody thinks I thought I was sending a csick fighter in to the ring, there was this really weird strain of the flu that went through here, that would come out of nowhere and come back.It did it to me too
It relapsed when she was allready at the fight, so she fought.
My training hasn't been ideal lately. My coach is back tonight so I'll get one good workout. He's good at keeping training at a high intensity and keeping everyone on track so that we get conditioning in with boxing. Since he's been so absent, my conditioning isn't what it used to be or I'm just in kind of a rut or something.
I'm going to go to a show this weekend and help with the bouts, we have two guys fighting, then I need to focus on my training for the next month. I'm hoping to get a bout Dec. 13th against a gal I've fought before (2x), but she's very aggressive so I need to be tip top.
It's good to hear you do have some good things to say about your coach.
I'd still at least talk to him about sparring if you think he's going to keep pairing you up with slow beginners and not allow you to get the more advanced sparring in to balance this.
I don't think talking to my coaches would have made a difference in my situation because I did actually try that a few times. I was just sort of forgotten I think.
if your coach does keep sessions on track and structured and is aware if where everyone is when he is there then at least he has something that was lacking in my situation. Maybe if you talk to him about it things will improve?
Well, he knows I need different sparring. The problem is that I'm the smallest in our club and the only other girl is so new and slow that it's not helping me. The nearest gym from us is an hour and a half drive so we make the trip when we can. (they have a few 13 yr old boys that I spar with) But it's a big inconvenience for my coach and I think he's a bit burnt out on the whole boxing thing so I don't want to push it too much.
I'll mention again that I need to get up there to spar and see how he feels about it.
Tricky situation!
Do you have to car pool with your coach and have him present when you spar. I know it is better to have someone there who can give you feedback and tips on strategy as you go and that's ideal.
Having said that i didn't have my coaches there for most of my interclub sparring and while some of the sessions were frustrating they were still better than nothing in my opinion.
Do you think he'd let you drive there alone sometimes when he can't make it?
Damn the beginning to be over boxing thing is rough. I really don't know what to do about that but i guess with some people it will just be a phase so hopefully he is reinvigorated soon!
Yeah, his father-in-law just died so he's been under a lot of stress.
I've been to the other gym before with my coach and without. Just depends on the circumstances. I'd rather he be there, but we know the other coach and boxers well, they are friends of ours so it's not a huge deal if I go alone. I'm going to mention it again at the end of next week after he's had some time to relax and all.
How are things going?
Well, we just had Thanksgiving so I've been out of town for a few days.
All I could do when I was gone was run, but that's ok.
My coach is working on getting me a match for the 13th of December. If he does, I'm going to insist that he take me up to the other club to spar with some of the younger boys there. (the opponent that we're trying to get is about 5' tall and I'm 5'6" and the shortest in my club) so I need to spar with some shorter kids.
Feur runs in to an allmost similar problem, she ends up sparring with everyone, but her height makes it almost prohibitive to judge the results, she's 6 even so she destroys everyone shorter then her,and I dont get enough guys in here who are bigger then her. Ive given her her worst problems sparring, and since Ive officially retired now,I hate sparring,my goal is to get old and fat and let other people lift weights while I complain about my arthritis.;D
Erg! Fight in one week and no chance of any other sparring. Boooo  I watched my last match against this girl as a refresher for what I need to be working on and I realized that I've stopped doing all the things that worked against her. The girl that I mostly spar with in the gym is a bleeder and has a sensitive nose so I stopped throwing uppercuts all together. This is really frustrating, every time there is a newbie, I get stuck with them for 3 months and then I have to spend the next three months getting back to where I was when they started. No wonder I'm not getting any better. This is really frustrating.
I'm going to focus mostly on conditioning early this week and just hope for the best. I can't change a whole lot at this point. I feel like last spring (the last time I fought this gal) I was much better than I am now. I can't un-do all the bad habits I've formed trying to help this new girl out in just 5 days either. So I think if I just focus on conditioning and the basics it's better than nothing.
That is frustrating!
I've read papers where they compared groups of athletes practicing something (wish i could remember what) physically to those just visualizing it. In reality there was not a huge difference in retention of what they visualized compared to what they actually practiced.
I guess the good thing is you don't need to learn anything new against this girl - you have done it before - you're just rusty. Perhaps if you spend some time visualizing what you're going to have to do in shadow sparring and say for 10 minutes before bed every night you'll still pull it out when you need it. :)
I think you need a good night's sleep to retain information at your best also so don't sleep deprive yourself - except for those days where you just learn nothing you want to keep! ;D
I think from memory it's only the last few hours of a restful nights sleep which has you consolidating your memory or something - can't remember the specifics but under sleep and your visualization practice won't be as effective.
Good luck! :)
Firstly sourpuss, I feel you. Am there with the newbies now, taking punches in the head letting them learn and getting nothing but frustration back.
Secondly, I really like Sharlas advice here given your situation. You got to work with what you got. I would consider visualizing what u need to do to win and then maybe practice using shadow boxing, then the heavy bag, maybe even mitts to try to work that out some. I mean, sure...having a capable sparring partner to work it out on would be better along with more time to prep...but you gotta take what u got. Anyway, I don't really know and am shooting from the hip on this...but I think if I was in your shoes, that is what I'd do.
Thank you guys, I will do that. I usually spend a good amount of time meditating on what I'm going to do, but I will make an effort to do a lot more to make up for the other stuff.
I'm also going to spend a lot more concentrated effort in shadow boxing this week rather than just using it as a warm up.
Thanks for the advice!
I didn't get to work out last night because I ended up working a 12 hour day so I figured a good night's sleep would be better.
Tonight I'm heading to the gym early and I'll run 1.5 miles before training and another 1.5 after. I have no idea what our coach will be having us do. But if he doesn't have us do sprints I'll do them afterward. He usually splits the two hours up like this:
10 jump rope warm up
30 minute interval drills; stairs, sprints, push ups, burpees, etc. (just 30-40 mins of intense exercises for fitness, agility, strength...whatever he feels like)
Then wrap up and for the next hour+ is bag drills, defense drills and sparring.
I imagine we'll do a lot of sparring this week since most of us are fighting this weekend.
Ok, so here's a question for you competitors.
A: how often do your bouts fall through? and...
B: how do you stay focused when it seems to happen ALL THE FREAKING TIME!?
My opponent for Saturday canceled tonight. I don't know if the reason she gave was true or if they just didn't feel like driving for only one bout. But either way, nothing I can do about it. She was the only one who would agree (after MUCH begging, offering to pay hotel and trying to find bouts for other guys from her club) Everyone else either wouldn't return my coach's calls or flat out said no. So this was my only option.
Anyway, in four years my parents have only seen me fight four times and they haven't seen a match of mine since March of 2006. They were going to be able to attend because it was within driving distance and they were planning on bringing friends of theirs as well. I've only had a couple of friends ever come to my fights and I've never had a bout in the town I live in. All of my fights are in my opponents home town. (that gets old, once in a while I'd like for the crowd to cheer for me, especially if my mom and dad can be in the crowd)
So how often does this happen to you? And how do I stay focused and not just throw my hands up and say f*ck it?
Sorry to hear, sourpuss. It sucks so bad and I know you are frustrated.
:(
I went through a bad patch of it, cancellations or no shows, so I know the feeling...and then ran into a good patch just recently but even then it wasn't smooth, and even in a big tour. But ultimately I think it is what you told me some time ago, is that tours are the safest bet. And even then it is risk of sorts at times.
It's nerve wracking fighting in front of your own town or city. I was a mess, much worse then fighting away. But also, yes...it is nice to have your friends and family there and people cheering hard for you for a change.
I suppose you just need to vent, for you know the answers to your questions.
Yeah it sucks. It was always the same for me too and it can get really expensive travelling a lot for amatuer competition. That's not so bad when you feel like the preparation is structured and your opponent weighs in at the correct weight etc.
I think you'd know that's not the way it often goes though. You get there after having crap sparring and not a really structured preparation, deal with whatever the home town side want to serve up because you've invested too much to pull out when an opponent weighs more or you are ripped, you empty your pockets on the travelling and training expenses and come home again.
If you're lucky you'll get a vid of the bout but often people will be too disorganized to arrange that when they say they will. Maybe you can show that to your folks but it's not the same as having their support at the time and maybe being on the home town side once in a while!
Yes it sucks. It has bothered me a lot.
Still I think I miss the training and I am starting again as soon as I have my new flatmate moved in and work undercontrol.
I think for me it was so rare in the end that i did get a bout or even that it looked like my coach was in the mood to accept one (because I can't say he ever looked but just accepted offers) I grew to depend mostly on getting satisfaction from seeing improvement in training.
That in itself can be difficult when your sparring isn't great or the coaching logical or conflicting commitments limit you but i guess those things are usually phases and one way or another they will pass.
Things will get better again. Maybe because you start using more resources outside of your boxing club - maybe by driving yourself to interclub sparring as a non negotiable thing your coach has to accept.
Maybe by getting more into your running and other little comps and training challenges you can use as indicators of your boxing fitness so you always feel like you are achieving something?
I personally have found Scrap's riddles and just trying to get my own head around training principles motivating even when I haven't been in the right physical shape to perform at my best.
Even when injured I enjoyed the pool and the swimming club. It's not the same but I think many of us get into this because we are happiest being active people regardless of competitive results and tribulations.
I realized something, sourpuss. When you said my one of my trainers was hot...I think it is because he has a bit of that Roberto Duran thing going on.
So, in an effort to cheer you up, I am ditching the flowers and going with this instead.
