Re: Supposedly "great" movies that kind of sucked
Can't be arsed to multi quote this massive thread but there's a few great movies that shouldn't be mentioned in here.
First and foremost = Fight Club. Can't remember who didn't like that but you need your head testing! Easily one of my top 5 films. ;D
Also Crash, that was a great movie too! Million Dollar Baby as well.
Anyway, I'm probably about to remove any credibility my opinion has, but the most over rated movie of all time without a shadow of a doubt is STAR WARS!!
It's not that it's a bad movie, or the sequals for that matter, but how on earth it creates the hysteria and crazed following it has is beyond me. It's consistently voted best movie of all time in countless polls yet I just don't get it! It's just average at best.
Maybe if I was a little older and grew up watching those movies over and over I'd have more appreciation for it. Who knows...

I think I'm starting to agree with Bilbo about the concept of super human movies in general. Now that I think about it, I definitely wouldn't consider any of them great movies. I know a few people who are obsessed with them. For example, a few weeks ago a friend of mine so so excitedly tells me: "dude, the trailer for the Wolverine movie's coming out", me: "ok" (wait a second isn't that homo Hugh Jackman wolverine)
I think I'm going on the attack tomorrow, relentlessly make fun of their bizarre superhero obsession. Has anybody seen Clerks 2? Where the old Star Wars nerd talks so much shit about the Lord of the Rings to these new Lord of the Rings nerds that one of them vomits? Hopefully it will go like that.
I'm starting to like your posts more and more Ouma. If when you create your 'Superhero movies are gay' thread maybe we can explore the secondary issue that fans of such movies, i.e Amat admit to having no interest in sex, girls, porn and masturbation, and think that Batman, a single middle aged man who lives with another man in a bat cave, wears a fetish costume and is best friends with a young tight wearing child acrobat is 'badass'.

Star Wars was far from average in it's cinematography, special effects, it's imagination. In that sense a real science fiction groundbreaker. But I suppose it was hardly an serious adult plot, and some of the acting was questionable. And Luke Skywalker was a goof. Hans Solo was great though.

Re: Supposedly "great" movies that kind of sucked
How about "The Dark Knight" is voted #5 on imdbs top 200 movies of all time.
I thought it was pretty good. The Joker parts were the only scenes I like. I really wanted him to win, destroy the city, and cause utter chaos.
Christian Bale really pisses me off as batman. That whole batman snarl thing, I dont like it. Without The Joker its a 6/10 movie to me. Two face was ridiculous, he looked like the terminator. All the Gyllendhals sucks.
Either Im missing something or the masses on imdb are idiots
Both Nolan Batmans are over rated. I like the Burton ones more.
Heath Ledger was badass Joker, though.

I think the score is all about Heath Ledger to be honest.
The fact that he died after filming and this is his last appearance means the film will be immortilised in a way it never would have otherwise.
I have seen some of Ledgers bits and he is good I have to say.
-
Re: Supposedly "great" movies that kind of sucked
As a nerd, I was on The Dark Knight before Ledger died and when they released the first pictures in that internet campaign Who Is Harvey Dent I was properly geeked up. I agree more could have been done with Two Face meaning he could have been Two Face for longer in the movie.

Re: Supposedly "great" movies that kind of sucked
The more I hear about it the more I think the voice will annoy me if I ever see it, it annoyed me the first time but nobody else I knew thought so, now its obvious its annoying generally.
I get that the first one was setting stuff up, still overrated IMO.

Re: Supposedly "great" movies that kind of sucked
I'll admit I wasn't huge on the first one I thought it was a bit boring and despite Cillian Murphy being a great actor, it was a bit much the whole thing but it was just setting up and even then I thought Batman Begins was the best super hero movie ever until The Dark Knight blew it out of the water.

Definitly agree about the prefrence for the Burton ones,I havent seen the Dark Knight yet,so I'll reserve judgment on it. For all the absolute crap he's done in his career, and as much as I thought Burton was huffing when he cast him,Keaton really did a good job in the role. Of the 4 whove had the role on the big screen,he was the most believable and developed as a character.

What was so good about Fight Club ? most of the story was made up in his head, so it seemed pointless. It was a boring film with a weird ending, i think alot of people like it because it has a cult following. But really what is so good about it ? you tell me.

The fact that,it is in his own head is what makes it cool. We all have a moment where we want to do something that isnt societaly acceptable. The lead character creates a side life, where he can do those things. He realizes most of what you strive for, if its just things, is BS. But he cant let it go, so he creates an alternate him to leave the system

Yes but it doesn't make for an interesting or good movie, it just seems most of the film is pointless. And the ending was just damn right weird, i just thought most of the film was garbage.
Brad Pitt was overrated the movie was boring and in the end pointless. And i haven't seen the film in a few years and i don't plan to watch it again, but don't they blow that place up ? what the hell is that all about ?

I actually thought Batman Begins was a better movie. I liked Ledger and all (he was great), but there was a lot more character drama in the first one imo. Then again, I am not really a Batman-fan per sé (even if I liked the Burton-movies), so I might just not find the characters from the comics particularly interesting, if they dont actually bring something on the screen.
And Die Hard is an absolute classic! Not even a guilty pleasure kind-a-thing, but absoletely and objectively a bad-ass flick. Like Reservoir Dogs. And Fight Club.
As for the one who mentioned Failure to Launch. Ouch. I was watching a few movies on dvd with a couple of female friends a few weeks ago, and we started out by watching Goodfellas (GREAT MOVIE - and my choice, obviously), and then proceeded to that piece of crap (their choice). It was beyond doubt the worst movie I've seen in a couple of years, however it was so atrociously bad that we ended up discussing it for weeks afterwards. The kind of movie where we'd be sitting there making jokes ('at least they won't do that'), only to see the jokes actually played out on screen afterwards.

Re: Supposedly "great" movies that kind of sucked
The Dark Knight was a decent action flick. But thats as far as it goes. Its certainly not a top 5 film of all time.
The original Star Wars film is pretty rubbish IMO. Im not keen on Pulp Fiction either. Tarantino is not my idea of a good director at all.

Fair enough it just isn't my type of film at all, i don't mind films with twists and ETC. But as soon as a i found out it was all his imagination, it just felt pointless to me and the ending which im a bit vague on was very weird and i didn't get it at all.

I quite like Pulp Fiction but the rating it gets and ETC i'll never understand, its certainly not one of the best films i've ever seen not even close. I do like the dialogue which is top notch, but when i watched it last time i had to skip some parts.
Especially the parts with Uma Thurman which i find pretty boring, and the part with Bruce Willis's girlfriend that part is just one of the most annoying parts i've ever seen in a movie. But overall it isn't a bad flick i'd rate it 7/10, i think True Romance is a better film. Although even that film has some annoying bits at the end, some of the scenes in that film are legendary.

Fight Club is truly brilliant. You probably have to be of a certain age/mindset to appreciate it.
Listen up, maggots. You are not special. You are not a beautiful or unique snowflake. You're the same decaying organic matter as everything else.

Nah nothing to do with my age Fenster i'll just never like the film, i appreciate films with twists i even appreciate films with mostly talking and no action. But i just don't like Fight Club at all.
It had that pointless feeling to me near the end, and infact what the hell was the ending about anyway can you explain that one to me ?

Yes, a lot of people seem to like it. I dont know what is with Tarantino, I just cant seem to connect with his films. I saw Kill Bill and didnt like that at all.
I dont like A clockwork Orange so much either. I think that is completely overrated too.

Yes, I really like Fight Club. It was especially good on first time viewing. Wasnt expecting the end at all. Its unusual for me to enjoy a film with Brad Pitt in it.

Not just young.. older people i know didn't like it either.
In the end the narrator chooses Marla over Tyler (he's in love with both), so kills Tyler.
Marla and him go on to live happily ever after. Simple as.

I didn't like the film "Phone Booth".
I didn't think that 3/4 of it would be actually shot in a phone booth. I expected a lot more action.

I generally like both the book and the film, but one thing I dont like, the cutting out of the 21st chapter,in both the original American release of the book, and the film.
The whole point of the original book as it was written, was that redemption cant be forced, but even the biggest hard ass, will redeem himself,if only because he's getting to old for this crap

Re: Supposedly "great" movies that kind of sucked
I agree that the Lord of The Rings movies are all horrible and they are long and boring...just when those little trolls get to the top of one deadly deadly mountain peak, they look out and see the next deadly deadly mountain they must climb and it's way the fuck away in the background......bastards!
Star Wars is a masterpiece the original trilogy are great movies...the newest 3 are ok I guess, there was no way they could live up to the hype...IMO they should have spun off on a character like Boba Fett...it would have made it easier to meet expectations and different than the original trilogy.
Clockwork Orange is a great movie...loved it. I haven't read the book though it's probably why I'm not as harsh of a critic of it. I would like to read it one day along with 2001: A Space Odyssey parts of which I hear would have been extremely difficult to film even today much less back when it was made.

Re: Supposedly "great" movies that kind of sucked
I liked Fight Club, it didn't change my life but it was good.
Kind of the same way I feel about Chuck Pahlaniuk novels in general. I like them, they wouldn't make a top 50 favorite books list but they're pretty good.
I liked the Lord of the Rings. It was goofy, but I appreciate the fact that they didn't try too hard to act like Frodo and Sam's relationship was solely platonic.
