From where I'm sat, I'm not the one thats brainwashed. I'm glad that miles and boozeboxer are also talking some sence here.
I guess I do not see joining the military service and wanting to go kill people as being one and the same. As I've stated before very few service members have actually used lethal force. No Contest could just as easy be a clerk and only pick up his rifle 3-4 times a year to qualify.
So go and be clerk somewhere else.
Look correct me if I'm wrong but on an american football team it's rare that the quarter back scores the touchdown or kicks the field goal. He's still instrumental in scoring the points though right?
Get what I'm saying?
Of course you don't look at joining the military in that way. If the majority of the population did there would be much fewer people willing to sign up, fewer wars would happen. That wouldn't be good for the arms manufacturers or the military industrial complex.
There are only two people who touch the football everyplay. The center and the QB. The QB is instrumental on just about everying scoring play/drive so the analogy doesn't really work. Handling a battalion's finance paper work does not really equate to being the one indespensable cog in the nation's war machine.
I got a good friend in the Navy who has not spent a day in Iraq or Afghanistan but worked in Pakistan doing the flood relief, Haiti doing medical evacs and is now in Japan doing god knows what. My point is there is a huge amount of good being done by service members yet you seem totally fixated on the "every Soldier is a blood thirst killer"
You can do aid work in all thses countries without being in the military.
With job security and bodily protection? ;D
Sorry, Im actually with you on this, only because I know exactly whos bidding i would be forced into doing if in there myself.
I can still see both sides of the issue though.
We cant just tar everyone with the same brush in or out of the forces.

Re: I am attempting to join the ARMY.
Update: Took the ASVAB, got an 89. Passed my MEPS physical, and got my job. 35w (Electronic Warfare Signal Intellegence Recruit,...I know it's a mouthful)Just have to pass a DLAB test and I'm off to boot camp April 20th. Then I have AIT for 56 weeks :o. If I told you anymore I'd have to shoot you. Gotta study this weekend, but I'm taking tonight off to have a few beers and a steak.

It is not a line of work I would ever want to pursue, but you have made your choice and I can only wish you well. Good luck!
Steak and beer is much more my thing though and I think I might indulge in much the same later one! Enjoy! ;D

So you're entering as an enlisted man? For some reason I thought you were going the officer route. Dunno why...
Good luck.

Short name - Signal Corp.
Used to use pigeons in the first and second world wars.
Still have a few of the pigeon training books from back then.

Good choice, NC
EWO is a new field for the Army and will provide you with good promotion opportunities as well as when you take the uniform off. Don't sweat basic. It will have some long and hard days but when its over you will realize it wasn't that big of a deal. Keep running and if you aren't shipping real soon I'd go get an ALICE pack from a surplus store and a pair of combat boots. Start walking 2-4 miles a couple times a week in combat boots with 30-40 pounds in the ruck. Last bit of advice. Right place, Right time, Right uniform and Ready to train is 75% of the Army. Do that much and you will be fine. Good luck

I'm pretty sure its the Military Intelligence branch, I'll be the guy decrypting enemy transmissions, and stuff like that. I'm going to the Defense Language Institute, to learn a new language. I dont think they will have me catching enemy pigeons:D, not 100% sure though.

Re: I am attempting to join the ARMY.
Man they keep changing the names. Not EWO but Crypto. Either way, good choice. Big bonuses for 35P. Have fun with the DLAB. Weirdest test I've ever taken.

Close Was using 264bit encryption software with a random generator that hides 6 out 7 letters, then scrambles into random patterns before showing them on a screen.
It said, "Have Fun"

Re: I am attempting to join the ARMY.
Wow, that was an interesting read for 10 pages!!
Some shocks galore there, specifically Lyle not showing up on the thread & Miles being very reasonable when discussing the US military and foreign policy.
I considered joining myself when I was really struggling to find work before deciding that actually that being blown up by a landmine in Basra is just below falling under a train in ways I don't want to die. So now to just keep away from the platform edge ;D
Also I had too many misgivings about my country's foreign policy to actually commit to it.
NC, I'd say that the best post of the thread has to be VD's. Weigh up the fact that you are risking your life with what you want do & as it seems you have enjoy your new career and good luck :)
Anyone willing to put themselves on their line for what they believe in has my respect.
Van Childs (or whatever you're calling yourself these days), I know you had a thread about this ages ago, but I can't be bothered to search for it, so I'll just say that this is exactly what I imagine you're like ;)

Cheers though I got a laugh out of it

Re: I am attempting to join the ARMY.
Just when you thought this thread was dead, no I bring it back to life.:) I had to renegotiate my MOS because I failed the DLAB(I'm not as smart as I thought I was). I think I actually lucked into a better job though. I am now a 25S which is a Satellite Communications Systems Operator / Maintainer. The bonus is better as well ;D. Also I don't have to take any special test , just pass BCT and do well in AIT. I grabbed this because I figure there are good opportunities for employment once I leave the Army.

I told you the DLAB was a crazy test. Do they still have the weird symbol part?

Yes, I got an 88 which about 7 points short of what was required. You referring to the pictures with a made up language that you have to find patterns out of...yeah that was rough. My main problem was listening to the sentences and applying the grammar rules, and only getting one listen for each option. I actually didnt finish two questions on that part. :p
