Re: "El Perro" Angulo vs. James Kirkland - Saturday "Fight Thread"
Angulo punched himself out like Mike Jones did in the first Soto Karass fight. Both of them went completely ridiculous. Angulo might have thrown 160 punches in 2 mins and that takes so much out of you, especially when you get cracked by your opponent that same round.
-
Re: "El Perro" Angulo vs. James Kirkland - Saturday "Fight Thread"
just got home from work and I missed the fight  I was hoping it would be on youtube by now.
-
Re: "El Perro" Angulo vs. James Kirkland - Saturday "Fight Thread"
It was exactly the kind of fight that was promised - defense nonexistent and punch after punch after punch.
-
Re: "El Perro" Angulo vs. James Kirkland - Saturday "Fight Thread"
After the 1st round Angulo was spent, had nothing on his punches and was fighting on instinct. From the 2nd round on it was just a beatdown/mismatch and the end result was a forgone conclusion.

Really dumb move on Alfredo's part, he punched himself out, and the combination of that and Kirkland coming back and kicking his ass left him out on his feet and/or with little left to defend himself.
In boxing or even in a street fight, it's a cardinal sin not to pace yourself and if you don't, and you shoot your wad, you're basically at the mercy of your opponent.

Kirkland was down and it was a short shot that put him on his ass. He was hurt, but his head appeared to be pretty clear. Watching the fight a 2nd time, you can see Angulo landing some good punches in the follow-up, but Kirkland rolled alot of them and partially blocked alot. Having been hurt in fights before he was relatively relaxed with Angulo breathing down his ass.
Angulo never should have thrown that many shots. He threw about 150 punches in the first 2 mins of the fight. Then when Kirkland put him on his ass, his legs were really gone. He was never able to fully recover.
Kirkland fought smart too. He did use the jab to good effect. He didn't go crazy trying to put Angulo away. He just continued to grind him down.
-
Re: "El Perro" Angulo vs. James Kirkland - Saturday "Fight Thread"
Three things hurt Angulo.
1, Having only fought less than 2 minues in the pass 18 months. His timing was off
2, He punched himself out going for the stoppage
3, The speed difference. Either Angulo is that slow or Kirkland is just that fast. I think it's a little of both
They need to rematch. Having Kirkland relavent again is a good thing

I dvr'd it and I'm pouring another Jim Beam and Diet Coke and watching it for the 3rd time. Fun fight.
When Kirkland got dropped the first time it is because he moves his head and upper body, but he keeps his hands too low (even when he has them up). He keeps them just below the chin, which doesn't protect the chin!!!!

Hehe - mine was Crown, water, lemon juice and honey. Perfect mix for fighting a chest cold.

Great upset !
Most of us were picking Angulo or at least were favoring him, and hoping Kirkland would win. I know I was.
What heart and guts shown by both men. That first round was breath taking.
Alvarez's punk ass is next, if he can get by Cintron.

Well it's no guarantee Alvarez gets by Cintron, but if he does I suspect he will do away with Kirkland as well. That was a pretty good first round tonight but neither guy are actually good fighters in the scheme of things, I think Alvarez(though not great imo) absolutely blitzes him. This was basically a really good undercard fight that HBO tried to sell as two real prospects. Neither Kirkland or Angulo are actually anywhere near top tier fighters imo.
-
Re: "El Perro" Angulo vs. James Kirkland - Saturday "Fight Thread"
Kirkland did a really good job tonight , he chopped his man down a bit like Marvin Hagler used to do in his later years.
Of course Kirkland is no Hagler , but he brings excitment to the table.
-
People who say Kirkland has no defense needs to go back and watch. He slipped alot of punches and Definetly has improved his defense. Why would Alvarez eat him up? He is less tested than Kirkland. Julio, Angulo, Even Vera Is livlier than any one Alvarez has fought He was fumbling against Gomez and has been coddled and not tested at all

Also, it's worth noting that all of Kirkland's troubles came as a result of getting caught flush with that straight right... WHILE he was charging in, backing Angulo up against the ropes. He got careless, got caught, and spent the better part of the round protecting himself while getting his bearings back. Once that happened, he didn't get hit with anything major.

Re: "El Perro" Angulo vs. James Kirkland - Saturday "Fight Thread"
thewould not risk it now although i do w a nt o see sa ul taught a lesson about picking a man his size

Kirkland vs Canelo next anyone???
-
Re: "El Perro" Angulo vs. James Kirkland - Saturday "Fight Thread"
One thing for sure, I was sure that Angulo would eat would eat him alive and that Kirkland had no chances, especially after his lost to a very average fighter. I am surprised, not to say shocked, perhaps that he found back his roots after all and that if he can stay out of troubles for a little time, he might achieve something.

He slipped punches on behalf of Angulo being slow as hell and telegraphing everything. Kirkland does have extremely poor defence, his resting stance is purely a target the way he cocks his left before even throwing it etc. I think Alvarez, or anyone with an outside game, would absolutely pummel him. It was a fun fight for a few rounds last night but really both guys are quite average in the scheme of things.

I agree with this, Angulo's limitations were apparent, and Kirkland is still very "raw".
-
Re: "El Perro" Angulo vs. James Kirkland - Saturday "Fight Thread"
Before he does anything else, I'd like to see Kirkland in a rematch with Ishida, i'm convinced that the 1st fight was a fluke.
-
Just watched the recording ...what a first round. Kirkland just too classy in the end.Great fight.
-
Re: "El Perro" Angulo vs. James Kirkland - Saturday "Fight Thread"
I have to agree with those that say Kirkland is raw and has $hitty defense. I personally dont think Angulo really wants to fight anymore. He didn't seem to want it last night. He knocked kirkland down with one shot and tried to swarm him and make it an early night, but angulo looks like he just fights for the money now. Sad the guy refuses to go down because it really be bad for his health. Maybe he can find less painful work as a Freddie Mercury impersonator or something.
The shot that dropped kirkland was a text book example of how Kirkland will be eventually exposed and outclassed one day. Kirkland loves to try to swarm blindly with combos and never thinks about what might be coming back. There's a mentality there that says as long as i'm throwing, my opponent will cover and never get their offense going. Watching a slugger like Angulo, thread the needle with that punch made the look on Kirkland's face priceless when he got dropped with it. I think someone like Cintron would embarrass Kirkland and that's saying lot considering my opinion of Cintron. The feather punching Ishida dropped Kirkland because he was throwing in between Kirklands shots, Kirkland was either walking into shots or wobbled by straight punches thrown through his own offense and then put down. Its like a 154lb version of Julian Mr. Ko Letterlough (RIP).. a heavy hitter that takes some heavy shots but can be baited easy and countered if you throw with him.

Kirkland would knock Alvarez back to Ireland. :kick:

Re: "El Perro" Angulo vs. James Kirkland - Saturday "Fight Thread"
As someone mentioned above, Kirkland has a lot of flaws. He can be outboxed and he doesn't have a brilliant chin, but damn is he not exciting to watch! Someone like Lara will beat him easily so would Sergio. A fight with Paul Williams would be fun viewing while it lasted as would a fight with Wolak.
-
Re: "El Perro" Angulo vs. James Kirkland - Saturday "Fight Thread"
I honestly thought Angulo would win that fight especially in Mexico. I found myself cheering for Kirkland after he got knocked down. That was a exciting first round and what a great win for Kirkland, he brought it to Angulo.
-
Maybe I'm wrong but this seems to be be the 1st I'm hearing about how average and limited Angulo is around here. Canelo's defense isint great by any means Cotto rocked him a few times. He hasn't fought any punchers yet to make him pay. Canelo is an excellent combo puncher but can he do it on his back foot? The fight won't happen unless GBP are absolutely convinced that Kirkland is still vulnerable.. Oscar flew to Texas to put his neck out for James in court but Alvarez has grown into a rock star in Mexico. So the caution will favor Alvarez
-
Kirkland will get the winner of Cotto vs Margarito or don't be suprised if Dibella knocks on GBP door to try and make a Martinez vs Kirkland fight at Middle. Martinez seems to have no real American names he ca fight and Kirkland might be the most lucrative. Daniel Jacobs seems stuck on the Tarmac. Jermain Taylor is shot and Arthur Abraham has been on the slide himself even though he is trying to slim back to Middle

This might be an unpopular opinion, but I think Kirkland could potentially give Cotto all kinds of trouble.
As long as Margarito still has his beard he would savage Kirkland.

I doubt we see Cotto or Margarito in against Kirkland or Martinez anytime soon unless it is a cash-out fight for the loser of their fight in December.

Re: "El Perro" Angulo vs. James Kirkland - Saturday "Fight Thread"
What a terrific fight that was early man. Shit me. I was sweating just watching that first round. I even had workmates who don't like boxing tuned in this morning in the office watching a replay. Despite Angulo blowing out, I'd say Kirkland was much quicker than they expected too. Angulo looked stuck in mud.
I'd be happy to see a rematch man. Coulda been a different fight altogether if Angulo takes his time. I'm pretty sure he was expecting to smash Kirkland to pieces. As I thought he would do. Probably even GoldenBoy were thinking that too. Bet the bigwigs at GBP were gutted this morning.
Decent chance that Angulo never gets over that fight i guess. He took a serious beating in the end.
Anyone for a rematch?? Ha.
-
Re: "El Perro" Angulo vs. James Kirkland - Saturday "Fight Thread"
It was a good fight, a struggle for Angulo right after he blew his bolt. His punching power was savagely stifled by a man with something to prove. Whether it was plunger or luck, Mr. Kirkland gave it his all and his training kept him alive in the first round where the fight was actually won. Mr Angulo needs a long vacation and another trip back to the drawing board. He has real heart and a chin to match but he took a great deal of punishment. You can have all the great tools but if you don't use them which he didn't like simply holding on and not punching himself out so early makes one question what he does at night after a gym workout. It makes you ask, what's wrong with this picture or say that Kirkland is not only back but for real. He definitely is closer to the top of the hill. For Mr. Angulo, I hope he wasn't hurt too bad.
-
Re: "El Perro" Angulo vs. James Kirkland - Saturday "Fight Thread"
Awesome fight. Congrats to Kirkland, I wrote him off but he proved me wrong & he did it in style! Doubt Alvarez goes anywhere near. Wouldn't mind return or Cotto/ Margo winner, Trout, Williams or Lara. Kirkland has many options

I agree, James would be a handful for Cotto - I'm not sure his people want to put Cotto in there with that monster. James might have a questionable chin but we know he can punch & @ this stage in his career, Cotto will probably try & avoid that hungry young lion.

In this last fight James didn't show to have the best stamina out there. His chin and stamina has been exposed. I can see Miguel doing a better job than Perro. At least he has shown to have a better chin and stamina.
