Rory is ruined by his smaller measure of success.
That's a poor-ish comparison, the strength in depth per-sport is light years apart.
Rory (he's hyped because he's a consistent top 5 world ranker) started 10/1 favourite for this tournament, after one hole he was 200/1. Tiger Woods started 25/1 (even though he's an ATG who won The Masters this year), after a couple of holes he was 250/1. Phil Mickleson (another ATG who's won events this year) started 150/1 for this event.
Tennis is dominated by a tiny handful of players, hence 20 "major" titles for old men past their best, rated 2nd favourite for Wimbledon/US Open.

Jack had to contend with: Gary Player (nine majors), Tom Watson (eight), Arnold Palmer (seven), Lee Trevino (six) and Seve Ballesteros (five)..... ALL Hall of Famers. Jack finished 2nd more than 10 times to players on that list.
Woods had to contend with Mickelson and Els during his prime and little else. His 2nd place finishes were to one-hit wonders like: Trevor Immelman, Zach Johnson, Rich Beem, Y.E. Yang and Michael Campbell.

It is dominated by three guys completely, sonthe competitiveness in golf goes much much deeper. Maybe I used the analogy because somebody else was going on about tennis earlier in the thread.
I still do think McIlroy is overhyped, over rewarded and much less hungry than he was though.

When you control the media, its your views that get pushed out to the masses. Guys from that side of the pond seem to do better at The Open than at the other major championships in golf. I'm sure a lot has to do with the familiarity with those golf courses. But good for Lowrey. :)
I was just happy to see Tiger was nowhere to be seen.
But back to Lowrey..... he won in impressive fashion. Six strokes over the guy in 2nd place. Today apparently was a brutal day on the course, with gusting winds and the like.

No, Tiger's best years are behind him. Plus now there are hungry, young golfers coming up that will prevent him from winning any other majors... let alone the 3 he would need to catch Nicklaus.
Maybe if Tiger's career had been uninterrupted... no question he would've blown the career majors mark out of the water.
But in the end, when stacking their career accomplishments against one another, there's no comparison.
The Golden Bear beats the Tiger in every way conceivable.
I was sad when Federer's career majors mark was caught (and will invariably be passed). But I'm happy Nicklaus's mark is alive and well... and will at least survive Tiger's challenge.

Now that the LIV Tour exists, it pretty much invalidates any PGA major tournament win any golfer might get. Reason being some pro golfers have defected over to the other side. So PGA winners aren't playing against the best playing field.
That sucks for Tiger Woods, who is stuck at 15 career major wins, 3 behind golf GOAT Jack Nicklaus.
Not that it matters anyway. In today's 1st round of the British Open, one of PGA's major tournaments, Tiger struggled home with a 6 over par... tied for 146th, and way the hell back from the 1st round leaders.
So while it's commendable that Tiger came back from life-threatening injuries to be playing major golf, he's no longer a threat to the Golden Bear.

He's old (47), and honestly has never fully recovered from his car accident a couple of years ago. I suspect he'll retire in the "not-so-distant" future... and join the Senior Tour like most other professional golfers do.
