This would be a good time for Ruben to retire. He's had nearly 90-Bouts in the Ring, and

I see no reason why Ruben should continue. He has to struggle hard just to get down to 128 lbs.,

We are trying to line up WBC Champion - David Kotey. But his Manager says that he has '2'

I'll take 60-Days off, and get back 'on the-wagon'. No more Beer for me. I want a comeback

Danny again, or go up to the 130 lb. Super-Featherweight Division.

'Little Red' {Age; 23 years, 7 months} has been listed as a {10-7} Favorite to put a

We figure that this kid {Sean O"Grady} will give Danny some trouble for 3 or 4 Rounds. He's

But Danny's strength and punching-power will start to take over by the 4th Round. I expect

When Pat 'Papa' O'Grady signed Sean up for this bout on January 11, 1976 > Sean was not
even {Age; 18}. He was till a month away from '18'.
Pat 'Papa' O'Grady >
Sure my son is my 'meal ticket'. But this is an opportunity for a great fight purse. And if we do
well, Don Fraser {Fight Promoter for The Forum} said he will bring us back here.
Sean has had '27-Bouts' in only 14-Months. And, he has scored '11' 1st Round Knockouts. Yes,
some of the guys he fought were just 'show up' guys, but he still put them away.
Sean is ranked as the #9 WBA Bantamweight, but he's really fighting at a weight of 122 lbs. And,
we can't find anybody decent in the Southwest to fight him. That is why we are here in California.
We were offered a bout with the 20 1/2 year-old Mexican - Guadalupe 'Lupe' Pintor. He's 14-0-0
with {11 KO's}, and he's ranked as the #10 Flyweight. But he's moving up in weight, and win over
him won't help us.
I'd rather have Sean fight and 'lose' to Danny Lopez, than have a tough-tangle with Lupe Pintor.
Simply put, I'd rather lose to Danny Lopez than to Lupe Pintor.

Pat O'Grady had signed a Fight Weight contract, which stipulated a 'maximum' weight of

up at least a few pounds to Danny Lopez.
At 5' 9 1/4" > Sean O'Grady looked as frail as a 'weak-legged' just born Fawn.
As for a Fight Purse, Pat O'Grady got an 'up-front' fee of $5000 for Sean. Plus > 20% of

Pat 'Papa' O'Grady >

Danny Lopez had opened up as a {10-7} Betting-Favorite when this bout was announced back on

Danny was now listed as an overwhelming {8-1} Betting-Favorite.

and good boxing skills. But at {5' 9 1/4"}, he looked frail {beyond belief} and lacked any real strength
during the sparring sessions.
The Boxing Pundits did agree that Sean O'Grady's fast-hands and quick-footwork will give Danny Lopez
some trouble for a few Rounds. But, Lopez' power will take over after a couple of Rounds.
Pat 'Papa' O'Grady >
Look, I know that we can't out-punch Danny Lopez and win. But Sean can out-box him by using fast-punches
and movement.
We'll see where we are at after the 5th Round. I told Sean that he has to take this fight into the 6th or 7th Round
to win. We can out-box Lopez down the stretch and maybe edge out a 10-Round Decision.

In Round 1, Sean O'Grady displayed a smart 'hit-and-run' tactic, by firing in fast left-jabs and an occasional
right-hand lead to keep Danny off-balance by using quick movement.
In Round 2, Sean continued to employ the same strategy, as he completely 'baffled' Danny with good movement
and fast hands. Danny was caught 'flat-footed' and was ineffective with any of his counters. By the {2:00 Mark}
Sean was putting in a good 'spirited-effort', as he was willing to move in and take punches from Danny.
Sean also opened up a 'small-cut' over Danny's right-eye, when he caught him with a fast right-hand lead.
But late in the Round, Sean got a little too 'brazen', and he tried to take Danny out after 'tagging him' with a jarring
right-hand the jaw. But Danny 'cleared out', and came back with a strong-rally over the last 15-Seconds of Round 2
to put Sean back out-side and moving.
In Round 3, Danny started to work the body as he moved in close. Then Sean made the 'foolish' mistake of trying
to trade with Danny, and he got 'ruffled up' pretty good during the middle-session of the Round.
By the end of Round 3, it was obvious that Sean didn't have the strength to keep Danny off of him. And his punches
now lacked steam.
In Round 4 it was all Danny Lopez, as nearly chased Sean 'out-of-the-ring'. Danny came in by firing a series of
'lefts-and-rights' to both the head and body. By the {2:00 Mark}, Sean had run out room and was getting beaten
up pretty good along the Ring perimeter.
Then Danny poured it on, and had Sean 'reeling' along the Ropes as he was pummeling him with hard 'left-right'
combinations to the head.
At the {2:45 Mark}, Danny drove Sean into his own corner and thumped in a 'salvo-of-punches' to the head as
Sean looked defenseless.
At the {2:58 Mark} > Pat 'Papa' O'Grady threw a towel in the Ring from his Corner, and it landed over Danny Lopez'
head.
Referee - John Thomas called the bout over as the Bell rang ending Round 4.

Danny Lopez >
Give that kid {Sean O'Grady} 5-Years, and he is going to be an excellent fighter. He has great natural skills.
He took the fight to me for 2 1/2 Rounds, and he really gave me trouble.
Pat 'Papa' O'Grady >
I told you my kid could fight. That was '4' of most exciting Rounds I ever saw from a young fighter.
Sean O'Grady >
I was doing so well for the first 2-Rounds. Then I lost my head in the 3rd Round. I thought that I could
have taken him out. I should have stayed with my fight-plan, and boxed him for a few more Rounds.
Don Fraser {Fight Promoter} >
The kid put up one Hell-of-a-Fight. I told him that we would bring him back here in the Summer. He needs
a little more experience. But 'WOW', for an 18 year-old Teenager he can sure fight.
Pat 'Papa' O'Grady >
Sean lost his head in the 3rd-Round. He wanted to score a Knockout, instead of going for the distance win.
Chalk it up to experience. 'Little Red' was just too strong for Sean.
Sean O'Grady >
I got too eager in there. He was so easy to hit, that I thought I could get him in trouble in Round 3. But he
'baited-me-in', and he really hit hard to my body. Still, I never went down. Nobody has ever floored me yet.
Pat 'Papa' O'Grady >
All I have been hearing is that I never put Sean in the Ring with anybody good. I kept hearing over and over
that everyone of his '29' previous opponents were 'nobodies'. Well, I had to put him in the Ring with a 'monster'
like Danny Lopez. I had to show the 'experts' that my kid could fight. Now they will shut up, because my kid
fought a great fight. Despite losing, he gained a lot of respect from everybody.
Don Fraser {Fight Promoter} >
I want Sean to come back here and fight as a Bantamweight in the Summer {1976}. He's good, but he's not
ready for the Featherweight Division just yet. We'll get him a fight at 122 lbs., if he can't get down to 118 lbs.

Octavio 'Famoso' Gomez is ranked as the #1 WBC and #2 WBA Featherweight.
Benny Giorgino {Fight Manager and Odds-Maker} >
It is a 'Pick-Em' fight. The Odds are 'Even' here. If Octavio can get by the 4th Round, he'll do a
number on Danny, just like the last time they fought.
Danny Lopez >
The last time we fought, I was going through some bad times, and I wasn't at all focused. I was
just going through the motions. I guess I just wasn't experienced enough.
I plan to go fast and right at him. I won't let him get away this time.
Octavio 'Famoso' Gomez >
They have this bout as an WBC Elimination bout, but it is scheduled for 10-Rounds. I would have
preferred it to be 12-Rounds, as I am a boxer and not a puncher. The more Rounds, the better
for me.
I beat him easily before, and I'll do it again. I just want a Title bout, and soon. I'm not sure why
I have to fight in an Eliminator Bout when I'm the Top-Ranked Featherweight. But the $20,000

This bout was a 'Pick-Em' bout when first announced on March 18th. One-Week before the bout,
Danny Lopez was a 'slight-favorite' at {7-5}. But by fight night, the Lopez supporters had put
'Little Red' as a {2-1} Betting-Favorite.
'Favored' Danny Lopez took command from the out-set and put heavy-pressure on the cagey
29 year-old veteran Octavio 'Famoso' Gomez. From the 'get-go', Lopez had the 'nifty-veteran'
figured out this time.
Gomez did use his clever skills and unorthodox-style to avoid the early attack by Danny Lopez.
But by the {2:00 Mark} the Mexican was starting to wilt.
Danny used his pulverizing right-hand to stun the over-matched Gomez, when he delivered a
punch to the veterans 'heart' at the {2:15 Mark}. Danny then battered Gomez to the right-side
Ropes by catching him with '2' hard right-hand leads to the head, that drove the veteran Mexican
scampering backwards.
In Round 2, 'Little Red' continued with pressure, and delivered a series of 'left-and-right' hands to
the upper-body, that had Gomez in trouble throughout.
By the {1:30 Mark}, Gomez had slowed down noticeably and was now flat-footed. Danny continued
with his relentless pursuit of his 'older foe'. After receiving a hard combination to the body late in
the Round, Gomez dropped his hands and turned away in pain, then after a few-seconds he put
up his guard and backed away.
In Round 3, it was all Lopez as he hammered the over-matched Mexican with hard-punches.
Danny caught Gomez with a 'jarring' right-hand to the head, followed by a flurry of lefts-and-rights
that sent the Mexican reeling. Then Danny stepped in a delivered a solid left-hook to the head,
and came back with a 'sizzling' right-cross to the jaw.
Gomez then collapsed to the canvas and rolled on his stomach. He lay there as he was counted out
by Referee - Dick Young at {1:15} of Round 3.
Each fighter received a Fight Purse of $20,000.
Danny Lopez >
This was kind of a revenge bout for me, as Octavio really 'embarrassed' me last time we fought.
But now, I'm a much better fighter.
Now it's time for David 'Poison' Kotey. We're hoping to get him here in June or July. He has 'one'
more Title Defense lined up against {Shig Fukuyama}. He should win that bout, then I'm next.
I think I can 'Knockout' David Kotey, and win the Title. I've seen him fight, and I think that I
can knock him out early. I have to put a lot of pressure on him early, and not let him get into
his rhythm.
My best chance to win the Title is by an early knockout. He is a very good athlete who has
tremendous physical abilities, and that will be the hurdle to overcome. He gets better as
the fight goes on, and he would be really tough over the 2nd-Half of a bout.

I sparred with Art Hafey for 8-Days straight. 3-Rounds per Session. He was a little sluggish on the
1st-Day, but he got better with each sparring-session.
He {Art Hafey} is a good-hitter, but he is going to have a real problem with Danny's height and
reach. This is a real contrast in styles. A tall power-puncher {Lopez} against a short slugger {Hafey}.
The problem, is that Art will have to take a lot of punches to get in close. He's tough, but he may
take punches 'flush' as he is coming in.

We are the 'two' hardest hitting guys in the Featherweight Division {outside of Alexis Arguello}. I find it
hard to think that the bout will go the distance. Nobody wants it to go to the Scorecards. Both us will
be looking for the Knockout. But I'm the one who will win. I'll knock him out in the 7th Round.
I completely missed out on the 13th Sudden Death round. This is the first time I've heard about it. Thanks!

Since then, Danny was upped to {10-6}, and then listed as a {2-1} Betting-Favorite the

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Round 1 >
The bout got off to a rousing start in the Opening Round, as the fight developed into an immediate
'slug-fest'.
Danny came out by pressing-forward, as Art used long left-jabs while trying to keep Danny at bay.
Art, with a {5 1/2' Height and 7' Reach} disadvantage started winging 'looping' right-hand punches
from the outside as Danny pressed forward.

knee's slightly while at Center-Ring.
At the {1:55 Mark}, Art swarmed over Danny with a 'barrage', that drove Danny backwards and
into the front-left Corner.
But Danny fought off Art, as he landed a 'jolting' left-uppercut to the chin, making Art back out.
Danny then pressed, by using measuring left-jabs and quick straight right-hands to the head.
At the {2:22 Mark}, Art landed a 'big' overhand right to the head, that 'shook' Danny at Center-Ring.
But, again Danny continued to trudge forward.
Danny was now sporting a bruised upper-cheek on the left-side of his face.
At the {2:46 Mark}, Art caught Danny with a 'lightning-bolt' left-hook to head while they were in close.

Danny Lopez vs. Art Hafey
__________________________________________________ ___________________________
Round 3 >

a moment later.
But just before the Bell ending the Round, Danny caught Art 'flush' with a 'vicious' counter right-hand
to the chin that 'wobbled' him and sent him reeling toward the back Ropes where he was in serious
trouble.
Danny added in a left-right', and a hard right-uppercut just before the Bell.

In the meantime, Danny was still pressing with a straight-punch attack.
But by the middle point in the session, Danny came back and 'nailed' Art with a tremendous right-hand
that sent him 'sidding sideways'. Danny then poured it on, and looked to possibly drop Art.
But the 'tough-and-gritty' Canadian came charging back at the {2:00 Mark}, and shook Danny with
several 'jarring' right-hands.
Just as it looked like Danny may fade, he rallied back at the {2:30 Mark} an put forth a hard-charge that

but then Danny took control. Danny peppered Art with repeated left-jabs and solid right-hands to both
the face, head and body.
But despite getting pounded, Art stood his ground while looking for the right-hand bomb. Art did get
one in at the {1:21 Mark} that 'jarred' Danny. But Danny kept punching away and Art could not
capitalize.
Danny then 'slammed' in several solid right-hands from the {1:45 thru the 2:30 Mark} that 'rocked'
Art, and had him in some trouble.
Art was able to land a right-hand 'haymaker' at the {2:35 Mark} that shook Danny, and Art followed
with a brief late-rally.

Both meet at Center-Ring and trade. Art gets of with a few left-jabs, and wings in
a big right-hand, but misses.
Danny who is upright, continues to send in stiff left-jabs, mixed in with a straight
right-hand to the face.

~ After Bout Comments ~
Danny Lopez >
I figured it would take me about 4 Rounds to get Art out of there. But he was a lot tougher than I
thought. He took a lot of punches and a lot of punishment, and he kept trying. I tip my hat to him.
After I win the WBC Championship, I would give Art Hafey a title challenge in 1977, if he wants one.
He's still one of the Top 3 Featherweight's in the Division.
Art Hafey >
I guess I am pretty tough. He hit me with everything, and I was still standing at the end. Once my
left-eye got puffed up, I had a hard time seeing the right-hands coming in.
I will take the rest of the year off, and come back in 1977. I figure that after 2 or 3 wins, I'll be
right back in line for a Title Bout. 1977 will be by last year of fighting, and I would like to have
at least 'one' Title opportunity before I retire.
Referee - Dick Young >
Art Hafey was badly rocked and he stumbled away after taking '3' hard right-hands to the head.
He was in trouble, and I didn't want to see him get hurt anymore.
He couldn't see, as his left-eye was closed. I know that he wanted to continue, but I had to stop
it for his own sake. He's a tough kid, and I'm sure he was disappointed. But he was taking some
real hard punches.

Early Controversy On the Site for the David Kotey vs. Danny Lopez - WBC Championship Bout
Don Fraser {Fight Promoter for The Forum} >
We have offered a Fight Purse 'bid' of $120,000 for the WBC Championship Bout set for late-October.
We have offered the Champion - David Kotey $85,000 > which would be the largest Fight Purse that
he has ever received. We have also included, an additional $5000 in Trainiing Expenses, and full
expenses for '6' of Champion's associates.
Howie Steindler {Manager for Danny Lopez} >
The Ghana Boxing Promoters have offended us by only offering Danny $25,000. That is no offer,
and that means that they don't want their fighter to defend against Danny.
Look, I still thought that David Kotey didn't beat Ruben Olivares in the first place. It was a 'lucky'
Decision. It was close, but Kotey didn't win.
Danny is the Box Office draw here in Los Angeles. We could draw a gate of $200,000 > and Kotey
could gain a $100,000 Fight Purse. He should defend his Title here in California as that is where
he won the WBC Championship.
If they are worried about getting a Fair Decision here, all they have to do is look at his winning bout
against Ruben Olivares. That should answer all their questions.
Look, I don't want to cause an International incident, but Danny is not going to Ghana. No way, and
no how. And not for no $25,000 measly fight purse for a Championship Bout.
Ghana Boxing Commission >
The Champion {David Kotey} will only make the Title Defense against Danny Lopez in Ghana.
We have put up a Fight Purse 'bid' of $150,000 . The Champion will receive $125,000 > and the
Challenger will receive $25,000. That is where we are right now.
We understand that the Manager for Danny Lopez {Howie Steindler} has rejected the 'bid'. So, we
will make the offer to the next ranked WBC contender.
Lt. Col. Simpe-Asante {Ghanan Director of Sports} >
We will have the bout in Ghana at the Accra Sports Stadium, that I will guarantee you. We will work
out the details, as we are still negotiating the Film Rights with the film distribution company.

~ Champion - David Kotey and Challenger - Danny Lopez Sign ~
The early line has the WBC Champion - David Kotey as a {2-1} Betting-Favorite, as the
bout is scheduled for Saturday Night ~ November 6, 1976 and in Accra, Ghana.
http://static.boxrec.com/thumb/9/95/...ison_Kotey.jpg
Benny Giorgino {Los Angeles Odds-Maker} >
It is simple. The bout is held in Ghana, and the Champion will be the Betting-Favorite
at {2-1} to win, most likely by a 15-Round Decision.
If the bout were held in here in California, then Danny Lopez would be the Betting-Favorite
the same way at {2-1}.

David Kotey vs. Danny Lopez
~ Pre-Fight Skinny ~
Danny Lopez arrived in Accra, Ghana on Sunday ~ October 17th. That would give Danny
nearly 3-Weeks to get acclimated to the heat and high-humidity in Central Africa.
Danny only brought along David Sotello as his sparring-partner.
David Sotello had been to Accra, Ghana before, when he fought David Kotey in a 10-Round
'non-title' bout back on December 21, 1975. In that bout, David Sotello gave David Kotey
all he could handle, and then some, in losing a close and debatable 10-Round Decision.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Champion - David Kotey has '2' sparring-partners.
* Sunny Robertson > A {22 year-old} Lightweight from Ghana. {Height; 5' 9"} ~ Record; 21-2-0 {10 KO's}
* Aziza Bossou > A {21 year-old} Lightweight from Togo. {Height; 5' 9"} ~ Record; 22-0-0 {15 KO's}
The Champion, with a muscular physique, was a fast working boxer-puncher. And for sparring,
he worked with '2' tall Lightweights. As both resembled the size and upright-style of Danny Lopez.
The Champion would spar 6-Rounds per Day {3 with each sparring-partner}. And then, perform
a 'dozen' 300 Yard Sprints over a 30-Minute period.
He would then finish up with 1-Hour of calisthenics, which included;
* Rope-Skipping
* Jumping Jacks
* Long Jump Lunges
* Squat Thrusts
* Sit-Ups
The Champion was a marvel in physical conditioning.
