Re: Current Greats and all time greatest Guitar players
I love Kirks guitaring. Love his creativity and he's played some great stuff in his time.
So i'd put him up their with the greats certainly
I woudln't however go to the lengths of saying he's better than any of the others mentioned...
I mean how can we judge this anyway.
Do we go on creativity?
Pure guitar skills?
Complexity?
Speed?
Passion?
Quality of songs?
I've always loved Metallica and a lot of the old guitar stuff that went along with them so it's easy for me to say that judging by any of the above I loved what Kirk did on his axe....
Maybe it could be edited to read,,, greatest guitar players and why they're so great?? That would help with the whole, no WAY is him better then him..!
Hendrix was marverlous also, I Santana was amazing, but yet I don't really like listening to him that much. Which has absolutely NOTHING to do with his guitar skills.... technically he may be 'greater' than others, but yeah... anyway you see what i'm getting at...
That guy that said Kirk was better than everyone hands down probably just f'n loved metallica, and he could probably hear another 100 great guitarists 1000 times over and still like listening to Metallica more,, so hence he would probably still say Kirk is the BEST guitarist ever.. I suppose in his opinion he'd be correct too becuase any day of the week he'd rather listen to him play guitar than anyone else...
okay i'll shut up now

It doesn't get any better than this:

Just think of what Jimi could have done if he would have taken the opportunity and worked with Miles Davis. This is sheer Genius! ;)

Re: Current Greats and all time greatest Guitar players
of no relation but the guy that produced Prince's cd;s. Jellybean Johnson: I saw him play in a shithole club with Ronnie baker Brooks and he blew my socks off. Fucking amazing.
Re: Current Greats and all time greatest Guitar players
Hendrix, Clapton, SRV, BB King, Albert King (I have a great cd of Albert King and SRV playing together), Howlin Wolf (have a cd where he's telling the Stones the correct way to play a song, hilarious) and many others. I'm partial to the blues and like the older stuff like Robert Johnson, Leadbelly, Sampson Pittman, etc. While were on this subject, I have been trying to find an early Rolling Stones cd which has some of their early blues stuff like Route 66 and Walking the Dog. I've looked at all the music stores in my area and can't find any early stuff, can anyone help?
Re: Current Greats and all time greatest Guitar players
That vid that Lyle put up reminded me -
Anyone looked really close at Buckethead? Is it just me, or does Paul Gilbert's prodigal student look an awful lot like Paul Gilbert?
Kinda fun, ain't he?

;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D I think IGNORANT is the most appropriate adjective. To play devils advocate, Kirk Hammett is playing in a completely different idiom. This guy was apparently a metal-head, but Darrell Abbott or Alex Skolnik blows Hammett out of the water in the metal-scene.
I love metal, and an abundance of other forms of music, but Hammett, IMHO, can't hold a candle to the creative maverick of James Marshall Hendrix. In terms of the Santana, and the Hendrix for that matter, it's like comparing apples to oranges. They are coming from very different disciplines and styles.
It's like comparing Picasso's cubist period to Jackson Pollak - it just doesn't make any sense.

Well, CC#680, P4P. I know where you are coming from. I played in a blues band briefly that was headed by a former friend named Doug. He was a black harmonica player who could play the shit out of his instrument, but sounded like a dying dog when he tried to sing. Guy remarked to me one time that I was too white and too Irish to play the blues. LOL And this was coming from a guy who's father was the first black physicist to break the color barrier at Brookhaven National Lab. I finished the gig, took my $110, and told him to call Buddy Guy (who I can't hold a candle to). Last time I seen him play, he was playing with this morbidly obese Italian dude...go figure.
Shame is he's a really bright guy with an amazing head. I just think that growing up in a predominately white suburb has made him a bit bitter due to some bad life experience.
