Re: The Nasty Weather Thread
Wow Spicoli..... sorry to hear you're in the projected path of the hurricane. Seems this damn season doesn't want to go away quietly. You live in the Florida panhandle? For some reason I thought you lived in Louisiana, although when one of those big suckers is coming in off the Gulf, it's not just one state that's affected. There's enough to go around for quite a few states. But you're right about storm tracks. It's a bitch that it has to hit someone, but of course you hope it doesn't hit you. Best thing would be for it so stall and weaken like Florence.... but this one doesn't seem like it's gonna do that. Stay safe, buddy. Let's hope for the least amount of damage to the least amount of people. If there's any silver lining, it's that it's not going to affect too much the areas that were devastated by Florence's rains, although that's precisely what Michael seems to be aiming at doing by the time it gets over there. If you're on the coast, beware of the storm surge. I imagine it's pretty flat land out there. Keep us posted bro.

Thanks man. Not my bullet this time but family members, one in the same. They drove into Panama City at 5 am this morning and staying at Nieces place, brick and two stories and last spoke they were waiting for landfall and we're east part of eye wall. Worst hit area sounds like exactly where they lived and left sandwiched in between Tyndall AFB and Apalachicola. From live cams, news coverage and the fact the local M.B and Port St Joe Police departments have had zero updates emergency or otherwise since landfall I'm assuming the worse as far as their homes and properties on mass. Empty as they may be. Cell towers and land lines down and no info from Panama city yet but waiting for a little longer and trying to find a route in.

From the news coverage, looks like Panama City took a direct hit from the eye. I hope your family's ok, and if they're in a brick, 2-story structure they should be fine. Scared as hell maybe, but fine. Damn these hurricanes seem to be getting worse every year. Seems we're in an UP part of the climactic cycle for these things. It also seems it's a roll of the dice as far as where these things form and where they're headed. For us in the Caribbean, it's the Cape Verde hurricanes that scare us the most. Plenty of time to churn through the Atlantic and pick up steam. For you guys on the Gulf coast, it seems they can just form in the Gulf and give you problems with little notice. The East coast at least has length going for it, but the Carolinas jut out like a jaw asking for an uppercut and tend to be sweet for these storms. Oh well.... it's either this or earthquakes. I guess I'll stick with the occasional hurricane. (Although after Maria I may just move to Alaska... hahaha).

Too many people moved to the beaches, they built up areas which nature intended to absorb the storms. Even our wetlands have been encroached on by people and they are supposed to help stymie the storm surge.....oh well.

Re: The Nasty Weather Thread
Hurricane Michael is hitting here a lot harder than Florence.....impressive wind out gusting here today. Lots of rain.
We'll be fine, just interesting to notice the difference between the storms

Re: The Nasty Weather Thread
Lock up and stay safe. Crazy that every time this year you get these extreme weathers.

This time last year it was the same. It seems an annual event. You are a tough breed. I would be crying into my cup of tea.

Damn, I never would've guessed. But then Florence stalled and weakened off the coast of the Carolinas, whereas Michael plowed through lots of flatlands in the Florida panhandle and has torn a path through Georgia and into the Carolinas.
Hope you're staying safe, my friend.

Re: The Nasty Weather Thread
The footage will pull your guts out. Sis and Dads homes are gone with the small community all but wiped out being just east of the eye wall. All I've seen is aerial footage and some stills and they just today got some boots on the ground in some areas but the entire area is splintered. Even Tyndall base was wrecked beyond recognition. Still no word from family members in P.C and love to pray that it's because towers, lines and power are all down. I don't know.

I feel for you, bro. The memories are all too clear. Not being able to hear from family members is the worst part, until they've managed to reach you and tell you they're ok. Had a daughter living in Denver last year who didn't hear from any of us for a week, and broke down crying when we were finally able to reach her after Maria. The thing with Michael is that it was just so quick to develop and reach the mainland. Shitty thing about those Gulf hurricanes. Sorry to hear about your family's homes. They say it's only material things... but losing a home is a huge blow for anybody... damn. I've seen some of the footage. It's brutal. 155-mph winds smacking right into the coastal towns. Don't know how construction codes are up there, but I remember after Andrew in '92 some of the codes were changed at least in South Florida. Winds like that will usually only spare concrete or brick homes. Wood if they're made right, but it's a chance nonetheless.
Stay positive man. It's usually the worst before you connect with family, thinking the worst.... but remember one of the first things to go are the power and communications. You'll hear from them soon enough.

I appreciate that Tito. Even after Katrina a had a landline out for 2 days before they went down. I keep searching surrounding roads of their last known location through their local news, drones and short vids on FB and random posts and well, it's hard man. It looks really really bad. Your gut talks to you but gotta stay positive right.

Saw the carnage this morning on TV that is horrific.

Re: The Nasty Weather Thread
It worked. Good news yesterday evening. Broken foot, two smashed fingers, couple broken hearts and their first showers in 4 days but very thankful. Now we just sort 10001 pages of red tape and plot the comeback.

Re: The Nasty Weather Thread
Injuries.... :o
Speaks to the massiveness and viciousness of the storm. Very happy to hear your news though. Sad when you keep reading the news and the death count continuously piles up as rescuers dig more and more into the destruction.
Glad your news were good.
Getting power back will be great..... but getting water back is too precious for words.

Yeh bud made our day. The spread of damage is unfortunately very impressive. Cannot see an untouched structure anywhere and anyone needing firewood has lifetime supply, bring a chainsaw. Shocked at least PC beach area already has a couple stores coming back. The roll out on energy crews is good so far.
-
Re: The Nasty Weather Thread
NC most certainly didn't get the full brunt of it. My parents are without power until Tuesday. Luckily for them they're on vacation so it's my problem. I had the chainsaw working hard yesterday.
I feel for Florida and all in the path, but it's the price of living on/near the beach.
-
Re: The Nasty Weather Thread
Yeah, you had a lot of land mass between you and Michael. I imagine Georgia got hit pretty good too, since the Florida panhandle is relatively narrow and Michael just smashed right through there.
Chainsaws and generators. Those are the sounds that fill the air after a major hurricane hits.

Or the price of living 200-300 miles inland from any coast U.S.A I spose as Michael made Ga. as a cat 2. Glad you're safe Lyle.

I about had a tree fall on me, but yeah didn't cut off any fingers or toes working with the chainsaw so that's good.
Crazy thing here in NC is the folks who have beachfront property whine about the insurance they have to pay and they want the landlocked portion of the state to flip the bill for their extravagant lot locations and sometimes the big baller ass houses they have.....so yeah I feel for the folks who lose their belongings and stuff, but not enough to want to fucking pay for it because I'm not brazen enough to build a home on the Outer Banks which (for those of you who don't know) are basically "Sand dune islands" which take the brunt of the blow for the hurricanes which make landfall in NC....which isn't so much applicable for Michael but it is for Florence. Even inland the storm surge can be extremely bad as PCB and Mexico Beach found out.

Re: The Nasty Weather Thread
Waiting on this fumble footed A hole 'Danny' to decide where he wants to touch down. Glorified rain storm likely but that Mississippi river is looking fierce. Record high. The levees should hold, bigger threat are runaway barges acting as torpedoes etc. And running out of rum.
-
Re: The Nasty Weather Thread
Danny or Barry? Either way... what a complete downer to have yet another wet storm aiming at the Louisiana/ New Orleans area. Gotta feel for those poor folks in the Big Easy. Having a city below sea level certainly doesn't help matters.

How is it going mate? Did the levees hold?

Pretty wide spread street flooding in the City itself and slow moving rain bands but river topped off near 17-18 feet rather than predicted 20+. What so many outsiders don't realize is that the City has an East and a West bank. Still under flash flood warning but standard. Some over topping in Plaquemines and minor breeches in low lying areas but all in all it was a 'dry run' for bigger storms.

Nasty Weather Update:
We're bracing for any possible impact from Tropical Storm Dorian due to be coming around the neighborhood late Wednesday to early Thursday.
On a side note, Dorian is female, which is the gender it was assigned at birth.

Re: The Nasty Weather Thread
Good luck with Dorian. Looks like a scrambled shit but as normal due to intensify. Last storm I talked shat about ended up destroying two family homes and leaving them homeless so maybe I should take them more serious. No but really fuck you Dorian. I am really tired of watching these things every year. Locally I've come to the conclusion that parts of Louisiana will be uninhabitable in maybe 8-12 yrs. it takes one heavy rain storm of maybe 30 minutes and we've got major flooding in areas that have never seen it. Had schools flood yesterday and so many impassable roads. Everyone always blames 'the pumps the pumps' but I think it's the inevitability of living in a soup bowl below sea level. If things go to shat city officials will open-close gates accordingly to save the tourist districts etc but the outer regions will be written off. Not to be fatalistic but seems fairly obvious.
-
Re: The Nasty Weather Thread
Hey thanks guys. As "luck" would have it, it's now curling north and every 3-hour bulletin has it more and more as a direct strike on Puerto Rico. Now we're just left with the hopes that it doesn't intensify.
I'll see that "fuck you Dorian", Spicoli, and raise you several dozen fucks. Yeah... it's getting pretty tiring to look upon August, September (the worst), and October with weary eyes and crossed fingers.
There are STILL places here that haven't fully recovered from Maria two years ago.
But yeah, I'm probably gonna be without power for days on end, so at least you guys will have a respite from my LGBTQ posts.
I may have pissed Dorian off by my earlier quip about it having had its gender assigned at birth. It'll probably stall right over my house. ;D
