Re: MMA bigger than Boxing?
well to the ignorant casual fan who does not understand the principles of fighting, training, conditioning, or even how to score a fight might lean to MMA because there usually Knockouts and submissions that give clear indications on whats going on. I just came from a sports bar that thank GOD shows all the fight even PPV for FREE. but some hillbilly dude was screaming later this month its all about UFC and said thats the real deal. so yeah the ignorant hill billies who are usually overweight and who do not train or understand any of the principles would clearly go for MMA over boxing.

one of my coworkers is a borderline retard , and an ignorant alcoholic who has been arrested for domestic violence and loves boxing...so by your rationale thats what all boxing fans are?..don't make silly generlizations it just makes you seem uneducated. I love both sports, and watch both..I find myself watching more MMA b/c they put on better overall fight cards and its easier and cheaper to watch it on TV. Is it bigger that boxing..no... is it growing by leaps and bounds....I'd say its undeniable.

Holy S***. If being sensetive is defending your opinion, I must be a F****** cry baby. How in god's F*** is stating that MMA will be bigger than boxing irrelevant when the title of the thread is "MMA BIGGER THAN BOXING"
How the F*** can boxing be recognized as a combat sport when you are limited to only using two parts of your body towards your opponent? MMA WAS INTRODUCED INTO THE WORLD IN THE 648 B.C. GREECE OLYMPICS FOR CHRIST SAKES! THATS AS FAR AS YOU'LL EVER BE ABLE TO BOIL ANY SPORT DOWN TO! THEY CALLED IT PANKRATION, WHICH MEANS NO HOLDS BARRED.
Only chicks and kids get mad at them when you disagree with them? EVERY HUMAN BEING GETS MAD AT ANOTHER FOR BEING A COMPLETE RETARD AT ONE TIME OR ANOTHER! If you never did, you would be considered Jesus, which means you have no back bone whatsoever.
YOU WOULD HAVE TO BE AN IDIOT TO DISAGREE WITH THE FACT THAT THE BOXING FAN BASE IS PLUMMETING WHILE THE MMA FAN BASE IS RAPIDLY INCREASING
I'm not dealing with a single thing I don't believe. Go right the F*** ahead and call me stubborn. I'd rather be stubborn than a little BITCH
Oh, and word filters can blow me.
Why...are you so angry? No I'm not jesus...but I don't get mad when people disagree with me either every one is entitled to thier own opinion regardless of how absurd one might think it is...if you get mad because people disagree with you then you fwooking stupid...see the problem is you're a diehard MMA fan and for some reason can't handle the fact that MMA will never be as big as boxing...
and as you say MMA has been around since 646 BC and it's still not that big...then obviously you're failing to to see that over glaring fact...that nobody want's to watch that crap on a global basis surely not enough for it to surpass boxing..
And actually it's only been the HW division that's been going downward...
BTW you must didn't see the fight last night...face it MMA will never pack an arena like that never...
It wasn't meant to be funny....i just do it because it obviously makes you itch...
THe thread reads: Is MMA BIGGER THAN BOXING? Since you don't understand "NO" I'll illustrate it another way for you...
"BOXING" <-------
"MMA" <------
also....Boxing= :crowd: see the happy fans.....
MMA = :cwm33: are they still on ground hugging?
Re: MMA bigger than Boxing?
I'm not getting mad at you disagreeing with me. I'm getting mad at you telling me I have the "Triple s" syndrome, implying that I'm a woman, and a child, and all that jazz.
I'm not a die hard MMA fan. I'm a fan. Just as big as a fan as I am to boxing.
No one wants to see MMA on a global basis? People watch wrestling, people watch boxing, people watch kick boxing, people watch Jiu Jitsu. MMA is so multi cultural that it combines Martial Arts from around the globe.
As I said, MMA been around since 648 BC, but then some douche slaps a bunch of dutchess of queensberry rules on it, and it becomes boxing.
I saw the fight last night (actually, I watched it about five minutes ago. DL'd that sunufabitch). Yes it was packed. BTW you must have not seen the pride openweight tournament two nights ago. Twice as packed, if not more, than delahoya/mayorga. BTW you must not have known that UFC sold out the Staplescenter for Hughes vs. Gracie. Deep down you know it's taking over. Go ahead and write all the oversized words you want. You're not trying to convince me. You're trying to convince yourself.
Re: MMA bigger than Boxing?
Alright man let's get it over with...you took the first shot and called everyone queerbait or something like that...that seemed a bit uneccessary so i responded...and that was that...i'll let it go and we can get back to civilized discussing of the topic..cool?
again MMA may be gaining fans but the fact is its currently not on the level of boxing as far as popularity...its still rather underground when compared to boxing...when it becomes an olympic sport started at the amateur level..then maybe it will gain some real followers who can appreciate the evolution of it such as boxing....because right now even though those guys are skilled in diffrent fighting styles it is seen as primative by the untrained eye..and those are the eyes that will make it bigger, because that's where the money comes from...so it doesn't have a real foundation...although i do remember when it didn't have weightclasses and i really was fwooked up..but it has made strides rapidly but the fact is again right now! Its not bigger than boxing....
Re: MMA bigger than Boxing?
It's always nice when everyone cools down.
I agree that as of right now, in most of the world, boxing is ranked higher in popularity, with the exception of Brazil and Japan. MMA has been rapidly increasing as far as popularity goes. It being legalized in California, to me, symbolizes that it will keep getting bigger and bigger, and widely be considered an actual sport as opposed to street fighting, and take over as the most popular combat sport. I think soon it will go back to it's original roots and become an Olympic sport. The evolution of MMA is moving at a faster pace than the evolution of boxing, which is why people fail to notice it.

That basically started MMA in North America.
UFC started out in '93 completely barbaric, with no holds barred. Then, they evolved into a more sanctioned and organized fed, with rounds, and certain rules.
Mike Tyson goes crazy, bringing the boxing world to the main stream once more. Then, he beats his wife, goes on Oprah, no one cares about him anymore. Boxing falls out of the mainstream.
Meanwhile, Pride FC is rockin the S*** in Japan. Sweet fights, awesome fighters, all fighting in what's quite similar to a boxing ring.
Fox attempts to bring boxing into the mainstream by airing "The Next Great Champ," but since FOX sucks at ratings, no one watches it. It gets cancelled.
Then UFC decides to make a reality TV show. TNN decides to turn into Spike TV. Since Spike is considered to be the first network for men, they had no problem putting MMA on cable, and brings it to the main stream. People see Bobby Southworth cut 20 pounds in one day, and then they're immediately hooked to the show.
Boxing makes an attempt to hit the mainstream by airing the Contender, however, NBC decides to give it a terrible time slot, and it fails in Ratings.
UFC airs a full event on Cable TV, and promotes the S*** out of UFC 52. More and more fans are hooked after seeing Stephan vs. Forest.
MMA gets legalized in California. Their having en event at the Staples Center, home to some of the greatest boxing matches of all time.
Now, people are more familiar with the name Chuck Lidel than Jermaine Taylor.
It's a mad mad mad mad mad mad mad world.
I love UFC, but there's no way it will ever eclipse boxing, in my opinion. Unless I'm mistaken, UFC's PPV numbers don't hit the heights of the few megafights we have per year in boxing. I could be wrong, but I'm fairly certain that boxing still gets the PPV buys. And that's not to mention that boxing has greater variety. UFC have very few main eventers. Now that they've done Couture vs Lidell/Ortiz to death, they might struggle to maintain popularity. Quite simply, MMA doesn't boast as many fighters at this moment and that really limits the sport.

UFC is getting more and more main eventers. Franklin, Hughes, GSP, Sylvia, Arlovski, Ortiz, and Chuck are the biggest buys right now. I think within the next year or so we're gonna see some good and new top talent in North America. The thing about UFC is that once you lose, you're basically done. They tend to give few chances. This is why Pride is more exciting, and better. If you lose a fight in Pride, it's not that big a deal. They give you more and more opportunities to learn from your loses, and become a better fighter. Thus, Pride has a wide variety of Main Eventers.
Re: MMA bigger than Boxing?
I actually watch some UFC the weekend and the good fights were very entertaining but some were :cwm33:
It is no where near boxing but in a couple of years you never know
I still think a boxer would kick ass in that ring.
look at this way, what usually gets people knocked out?
Yes punches so how could a ufc fighter compete with a boxer trading punches
I know some one will come back with grappling or submission but a boxer would KO him at first opportunity
If a UFC fighter could box at world level they would cos there is more money in boxing.
hardly any ufc fighters have undefeated records cos its not as skilled as boxing and anyone has a chance.

These are the posts that piss me off bad!!!! a NHB Fighter wouldnt trade with a boxer DUH!!! He would be to busy Kicking him clinching him kneeing him in the face, take him to the ground sub him or ground and pound!!!! 2 different concentration and allert levels MMA is like Flying a fighter jet thru a dog fight compared to boxing which is like riding your bike thru the park
Boxing is fists only!!!!!! MMA is utilizing and defending against heads, elbows, knees, legs, takedowns and over a 1000 submissions

Re: MMA bigger than Boxing?
It's about longevity and censoring. Boxing has been more popular for longer, and I think a big part is because of TV. MMA was viewed as being too brutal for all audiences. As far as I know, it has never been shown on regular TV. And since boxing IS more popular, you can make more money gambling on it than MMA. I'd say that has a part in it too. You know what gambling can do for a sport.

Agreed to a certain point it was good to see UFC starting up on tv a few years ago Spike tv has the reality show plus regular fights
