Re: Who Thinks Meldrick Taylor Was Screwed
one last thing, this was not a flash knockdown. Taylor was being hit more cleanly in this round and gradually leading up to this round-and you could see something like this happening, then he was hit near ring center with that nice right hand which made him stagger, then he ended up on the ropes to get that last Chavez right. But had the knockdown against the ropes happened without that stagger maybe and probably Steele would have let the fight go on. But Steele could see this was the result of a long drawn out fight.
My friend was at the fight with his mom, and he said that on HBO they acted like Taylor was winning easily, but in person you could see Taylor getting hit cleanly and wearing out. He said it was amazing to see the difference from being there live to coming back and watching the fight on HBO.

It's always that way. I think that is why people are usually upset by decisions that looked bad. I still don't think that Steele made a good decision. Taylor was looking him in the face before he asked him, then he looked over to Duva, then Steele waived it off. He only asked him once, he counted to 8 Taylor was up by 5, looking at him count, looking at his trainer, I agree he was taking a beating, but he still won that damn fight and Steele made a very hasty stoppage. Regardless of whether Steele was paid to stop it, he only asked once, and the fighter had been on his feet for several seconds before.

Re: Who Thinks Meldrick Taylor Was Screwed
When a fighter is winning a fight, time makes a big difference. Are you gonna stop a fighter from winning if there was only 1 second left? Use your heads. It mattered with only 5 seconds left. Taylor was looking over at his corner. He wasn't concentrating on what Steele was saying. I can't speak for Taylor, but, i imagine he would rather have brain damage, with the title belts, than to have brain damage without the title belts. The ref was wrong. Stop with the bleeding hearts. This is a game of fight to the death.

I imagine it doesn't make a whole lot of a difference to him at this point. Not that you'd give a damn you twat. Taylor fought his ass off and gave everything he had that night, people will remember him as much for it regardless what the ref's call was. If the fight had continued for any signifigant period of time he would have been brutally beaten. One more punch could have made it that much worse, who cares if JCC would have technically had time to get it off it's the same basis all fights are waived off on, one fighter could not have continued to fight. Say he'd lasted the 2 seconds and got a SD, which it would have been(shamefully). What then, an immediate rematch? Taylor as it was, moved up a weight division and won a world title after this defeat, although he was never half the fighter.. If he had gotten the decision against Chavez he most likely would have been beaten down in a 2nd encounter or people would remember him for getting lucky and surviving against Chavez and then ducking him. He was damned either way.
Re: Who Thinks Meldrick Taylor Was Screwed
he was screwed big time. the referee shouldnt of stopped it.

Got to give you a sc for that. This is NOT "a game of fight to the death", that is just ignorance on your part. I am hoping you wrote that tongue in check.
Re: Who Thinks Meldrick Taylor Was Screwed
People remember a win more than anything else. Meldrick did not win. He fought a great fight, but he did not win. How can you guys say he was winning the fight therefore give him the few seconds to win. All of you have heard the commentators say at the end of the fight, there cannot be a knockout.. That is when 10 seconds come up . Taylor ran out of gas at the end of the fight. At the very very end. That is how you guys think a guy should win? Getting knocked down and getting up and then letting him have the decision because he is so close to a win?
Re: Who Thinks Meldrick Taylor Was Screwed
If the announcers weren't making such a big deal out of it nothing would be being said. They tried to make it Steele's fault for stopping it. But Steele did the right thing and he did procedure. If you don't get a response from the fighter you waive the fight off. Whoever showed the vargas clip when the ref asked Fernando if he was alright Vargas nodded so the ref asked him to step forward and he continued the fight. Steele asked Taylor TWICE!!!! if he was ok and Taylor didn't respond. Fight was right to be stopped.

i disagree with stoppage but people have different opinions and no one is going to change there opinions both sides make good points lets just leave it there ;)
Re: Who Thinks Meldrick Taylor Was Screwed
Starr I totally agree. Good post. And the fact is the announcers more than anything were the ones who started the controversy. My buddy who was there said the fight was more even than people who were watching HBO could have imagined. He said that you could see Chavez nailing Meldrick throughout and he was getting in cleaner shots as the rounds went by. By the 12 it was a matter of time and Meldrick was caught. No one mentions how great Chavez was to be able to gut it out and get that win with seconds left. The man was great.

We don't because he was getting his ass kicked for the first 10 rounds of the fight and proved to be the inferior boxer between the two, I can see if he was dominating the fight but he was losing genius.
Re: Who Thinks Meldrick Taylor Was Screwed
Chavez was losing in points but wearing out Meldrick. Meldrick had lost alot of blood and had a broken orbit bone around his eye. He was totally busted up. Meldrick and Chavez fought a great fight, but Chavez was more resilient and he came out ahead. But the fact is that Meldrick was all but out. The only question is whether the referee should have considered the fact that Meldrick was ahead in the fight in letting Meldrick continue so he could win the fight. I just do not see how that is a factor the 3 seconds. If a fighter cannot continue you have to stop the fight.
Re: Who Thinks Meldrick Taylor Was Screwed
It doesn't matter who was winning it matters who won and it wasn't the first time a fight has ended like that. But because of the controversy and the hbo special showing pity for Meldrick people think its a controversy. Thats why a fight is 12 rounds and why they say don't blink. Would it have been fair to Chavez as he had someone out on his feet and unfit to continue to have the fight continue so it should have been stopped so Meldrick could hang on because he was winning? Then you'd have a bigger controversy on your hands.
