How about Buster Douglas?
A stunning performance against the seemingly invincible Baddest Man on the Planet ....... he was almost perfect that night - great jab, sound technique, good footwark, high workrate, sneaky right hand, strong chin and good heart.
That Douglas could have gone on to do great things and become another Cinderella Man, another rematch with a properly motivated Tyson, fights with a much smaller Holyfield and then maybe superfights agsint the Bowe and Lewis's.
Instead he went straight to the fridge and bombed out.

Jonney Nelson. Had great skills but never wanted to push himself or risk it.
I's also throw out Nassem Hamed and Don Curry

Douglas has said in the past that he never really liked to fight but he was raised to do it and had some sucess so he continued. If his heart was in in all the time he wouldve been great imo
Re: fighters that you thought would do greats things but never quite made it
Scott Harrison - it wouldnt be too late for him to get himself back on track if only he could sort out his problems outside the ring but I really dont know if he'll be able to.
Re: fighters that you thought would do greats things but never quite made it
Acelino Freitas. 29-0 with 29 KOs to dancing around the ring and quitting against Chico...

I'd say that all things considered Scott Harrison OVER achieved. Absolute disgrace the way he was handled in the run up to his defence against Nicky Cook.
Re: fighters that you thought would do greats things but never quite made it
charles burley but that wasnt his fault that was due to champions avoiding him like plague but still shame he never got world title shot
and before anyone says it i know he is in hall of fame but its real shame he never got world title shot
Montell Griffin springs to mind aswell had good win against toney then after them jones fights seemed to ruin him and he seemed to go down hill
Re: fighters that you thought would do greats things but never quite made it
JOE BUGNER
The greatest white heavyweight boxer ever
Re: fighters that you thought would do greats things but never quite made it
Donald Curry was a fighter who I thought was so great in stopping McCrory. He just overmatched him. Donald was so good and now people hardly talk about him, and then a guy like Buddy McGirt who is completely overrated is talked about as though he is great. No way is Buddy McGirt a great fighter and I think anyone who knows boxing knows this.. He was a good fighter. Donald was much better quality than McGirt and didn't have a bum left shoulder to blame for loses when he did lose.
Re: fighters that you thought would do greats things but never quite made it
HOWARD DAVIS THE OUTSTANDING BOXER OF THE 1976 OLIMPICS
DIDNT CUT IT AS A PRO
Re: fighters that you thought would do greats things but never quite made it
Sugar Ray Seales was another - Best Boxer award at the Olympics, Gold medal etc, then a detached retina.
Howard Davis Jnr was another .... he was like Ray Leonard with the talent but didn't have Ray's competitive heart.
